Book The South Its Economic Geographic Development Classic Reprint

Download or read book The South Its Economic Geographic Development Classic Reprint written by A. E. Parkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South, Its Economic-Geographic Development This volume is an attempt to describe the civilization of the South, mainly in its economic-geographic aspects, and to interpret this civilization in terms of its regional setting and its historical antecedents. In brief, it is a study of the evolution of Southern civilization. To develop the theme thus outlined the author considers his task to be: First, to describe the Southern environment, i.e., natural and man-modified - the surface features, the climate, the biota, the soils, the mineral and power resources, and the natural transportational facilities. Second, to describe, interpret, and explain, in so far as possible, the cultural features and patterns and institutions that Europeans and their descendants have evolved, in their occupancy of this region, the South. Cultural features and patterns as here used embrace means of transportation and communication, cities, rural and industrial landscapes, types of agriculture, mines, factories and workshops, and what not. Some of the cultural characteristics are to be read from the cultural landscapes; others do not exist or have not existed in material forms, perhaps merely in the mind of man as an idea, ideal, tendency, or pattern of thinking. The author has made no conscious effort to keep the material presented in this volume within the recognized boundaries of any one or two academic subject-matter fields. Archeology and history show that cultures in the course of time undergo changes, which as a rule may be correlated with advances made in mans economic development, i.e., the improvements he makes in his attempt to wrest a living from his environment. Economic goods with which he satisfies his needs are produced in increasing amounts and with a relative decrease in the expenditure of human and physical energy. Stages, steps, eras, periods, or epochs are recognized and so recorded in the advancing order. The writer (along with many other geographers) recognizes a normal order of economic development and a corresponding normal order of cultural development. Such an order is considered normal because the majority of regions in their economic evolution seem to have followed this order. Book Report on Economic Conditions of the South Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on Economic Conditions of the South Classic Reprint written by U. S. National Emergency Council and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Economic Conditions of the South No purpose is closer to my heart at this moment than that which caused me to call you to Washington. That purpose is to obtain a statement - or perhaps, I should say a restatement as of today - of the economic conditions of the South, a picture of the South in relation to the rest of the country, in order that we may do something about it; in order that we may not only carry forward the work that has been begun toward the rehabilitation of the South, but that the program of such work may be expanded in the directions that this new presentation shall indicate. My intimate interest in all that concerns the South is, I believe, known to all of you; but this interest is far more than a sentimental attachment born of a considerable residence in your section and of close personal friendship for so many of your people. It proceeds even more from my feeling of responsibility toward the whole Nation. It is my conviction that the South presents right now the Nation's No. 1 economic problem - the Nation's problem, not merely the South's. For we have an economic nubal ance in the Nation as a whole, due to this very condition of the South. It is an unbalance that can and must be righted, for the sake of the South and of the Nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Sidelights: A Picture of Social and Economic Life in the South a Generation Before the War It is not a history in the broad sense, but deals with material that is often neglected in the philosophy based upon human records. Details of politics are always of interest, because of the personality of leaders and their undue importance in the public eye. Behind politics, though, influencing and being influenced, are the real conditions of a people, - their habits of thought, their modes of action, and their industrial, agricultural, edu ostional, and commercial status. These may be truly estimated only by marshalling the figures in the light of contemporaneous conditions, moral, intellectual, and phys ical. Such a task has been attempted in this volume. Book World Development Report 2009

Download or read book World Development Report 2009 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising densities of human settlements, migration and transport to reduce distances to market, and specialization and trade facilitated by fewer international divisions are central to economic development. The transformations along these three dimensions density, distance, and division are most noticeable in North America, Western Europe, and Japan, but countries in Asia and Eastern Europe are changing in ways similar in scope and speed. 'World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography' concludes that these spatial transformations are essential, and should be encouraged. The conclusion is not without controversy. Slum-dwellers now number a billion, but the rush to cities continues. Globalization is believed to benefit many, but not the billion people living in lagging areas of developing nations. High poverty and mortality persist among the world's 'bottom billion', while others grow wealthier and live longer lives. Concern for these three billion often comes with the prescription that growth must be made spatially balanced. The WDR has a different message: economic growth is seldom balanced, and efforts to spread it out prematurely will jeopardize progress. The Report: documents how production becomes more concentrated spatially as economies grow. proposes economic integration as the principle for promoting successful spatial transformations. revisits the debates on urbanization, territorial development, and regional integration and shows how today's developers can reshape economic geography.

Book Planning for the South

Download or read book Planning for the South written by John V. Van Sickle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Planning for the South: An Inquiry Into the Economics of Regionalism The present volume, which attempts to answer this question, is a plea for regionalism by a man without a region. My residence in the South dates from September, 1938. With the exception of the first eight years of my life in Colorado and the next eleven in Baltimore, I have never spent more than five years in any one place; more than ten years were spent in various parts of Europe. My regionalism is thus intellectual rather than emotional. Nor is it the result of any sudden conversion. Are there any students who were privileged to sit under Frederic Jackson Turner who are not regionalists? His lectures made a deep impression on me in my graduate school days. His doctrines appear to me to have gained in validity throughout the years. I have more and more come to see our own Federal Union as a magnificent and continuing experi ment in the art of harmonizing profound and desirable economic and cultural diversities, regional in character. The regions of the United States, as Turner pointed out, are potential nations. In a sense, therefore, this is a study in international relations. Book Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century

Download or read book Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century written by Gary L. Gaile and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century surveys American geographers' current research in their specialty areas and tracks trends and innovations in the many subfields of geography. As such, it is both a 'state of the discipline' assessment and a topical reference. It includes an introduction by the editors and 47 chapters, each on a specific specialty. The authors of each chapter were chosen by their specialty group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG). Based on a process of review and revision, the chapters in this volume have become truly representative of the recent scholarship of American geographers. While it focuses on work since 1990, it additionally includes related prior work and work by non-American geographers. The initial Geography in America was published in 1989 and has become a benchmark reference of American geographical research during the 1980s. This latest volume is completely new and features a preface written by the eminent geographer, Gilbert White.
