Download or read book South Devon Including W Dorset Coast And South Cornwall written by Charles Slegg Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Devon (Including W. Dorset Coast) And South Cornwall: With a Full Description of Dartmoor and the Scilly Isles Our aim in this book is to complete, from a tourist's standpoint, the description of that beautiful south-western portion of England which was begun in our Guide to North Devon and North Cornwall. The kindly reception accorded to that volume has encouraged our endeavours to render the present one as correct and complete as possible, and we venture to h0pe that the traveller, who decides on exploring some of the less frequented and comparatively remote portions of the southern coast-line, will here find assistance not hitherto provided for him. District described - Taking as our starting-points Bridport and Axminster, as far as which towns we have brie y treated the approaches from London, and - as a focus of the Midlands - Birmingham, we furnish guidance along the Whole coast-route to the Land's End. Inland we trace the course of the Great Western and South Western Railways through the two counties. Exeter and its delightful, environs are described at some length, and of Dartmoor we treat as fully as we did of Exmoor in the companion book. The Cornish Moors culminating in Brown Willy belong to the northern district, but the lower and navigable portion of the Tamar, and the Liskeard region, extending to the Cheesewring, are ih cluded in the area covered by this volume._ The peninsula about Penzance is debatable ground and is described in detail in both volumes, and as the Scilly Islands may be made the terminus of a tour along either seaboard, they, too, find a place in each book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Devon Perhaps there is no rigorously defined region included under the title of South Devon, but there is a general idea that it may be said to be within a line from Teignmouth to Modbury, spreading inward in an irregular sort of way. Without any doubt the principal place within the area, though it cannot by any means be called a capital or centre, is Torquay. It has the largest total of population, and it is also the most considerable place of local government in the district, besides being the largest borough, though also the most recent in creation, too. It would flatter Torquinians not a little to suggest it had a Capital character; but it has not quite that qualification, though it is easily first in its own particular way, and there is no flattery at all in saying this. Download or read book Picturesque South Devonshire Classic Reprint written by W. H. K. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picturesque South Devonshire The scenery of North Devon differs so much from that of South Devon that it has been deemed expedient to devote a separate volume of Picturesque Devonshire to each of these divisions. The present volume deals with South Devon. Starting from Plymouth, the route traced goes northward to Tavistock, taking in Dartmoor, and then follows the coast-line, describing the principal towns to Axminster in the east, and striking northward to Tiverton and Bampton. An imaginary line drawn from Bampton to Tavistock would practically mark off the division of North and South Devon. This volume deals with the romantic district lying between that line and the sea. North Devon forms the subject of another volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Tourist s Guide to South Devon

Download or read book Tourist s Guide to South Devon written by R. N. Worth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tourist's Guide to South Devon: Rail, Road, River, Coast and Moor A Guide-book to Devon needs little introduction; but a few words may be said as to the scope of the present one. The most important and interesting places in South Devon being easily accessible by rail, railway routes have chief prominence here. At the same time care has been taken to point out the best walking and carriage rounds, and to give as many alternative courses as possible. A special section is devoted to Dartmoor, and the Tamar and the Dart are likewise treated separately. Throughout the aim has been to give the tourist the greatest amount of practically useful information, brought down to the latest moment, and condensed into the smallest compass; and the writer indulges the hope that he has succeeded in making more pleasantly familiar than before some of the manifold beauties of his native county - "Lovely Devonia, land of flowers and song." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Without Love or Licence a Tale of South Devon, Vol. 1 of 3 Whether it was coal or corn, timber or turnips, he always came out of the speculation some what the better for it. He was by this time reputed a warm man' amongst his friends, but neither he nor his wife was much addicted to show. They lived quietly, and though no one doubted Joe Mercer had money, nobody suspected him of being rich. Still, what could have made him take the old Dragon Inn? A house with a history, certainly, but a house, one would think, of which the history was ended; while, as every one knew, it had been shut up altogether for the last five years. Standing about a mile out of the town, a little off a road, which, running through a. Rich farming country, led to a large fishing village only, it was not likely to attract much custom. Years ago, when the Dragon was a prosperous house, it was much the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Naturalist's Rambles on the Devonshire Coast Hence I have not scrupled to sketch pen-pictures of the lovely and romantic scenery with which both the coasts of Devon abound; and to press into my service personal narrative, local anecdote, and traditiona'ry legend; and, in short, any and every thing, that, having conveyed pleasure and interest to myself, I thought might entertain and please my reader. It is not the least of the advantages of the study of natural history, that it strengthens in us the habit of wishing to discover the good and the beau tiful in all that meet and surround us. Book The Book of Fair Devon Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Fair Devon Classic Reprint written by United Devon Association and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Fair Devon This invitation to Devon is issued by the United Devon Association, an organisation recently formed for the purpose of improving the accommodation and facilities of the county of Devon as a place of residence and as a touring ground. It proposes, among other objects, to secure better means for reaching the West, and enjoying its varied and little-known attractions. It contemplates a gradual development of the means which will enable residents and visitors to move about with ease and comfort in the byways and open country, and on the sea coast. The scenery and other attractions of Devon have afforded infinite pleasure to the comparatively limited number which has visited the West, but in these days of speedy transit, when the world is open to travellers, this Association is desirous of making better known the claims of the West to the attention of all who seek "new" pastures. This organisation is recognised by the Lord Lieutenant of the county of Devon, by the principal county magistrates, as well as by the whole of the mayors of the boroughs, to whose exertions and co-operation it owes its existence. This volume has been compiled by many loyal sons of Devon, to whom the thanks of the Association are due, and are here expressed. It is not possible to name all who have shared in making the volume what it is, but mention may be made of those who editorially and otherwise with pen and pencil have assisted: Rev. Canon Edmonds, B.D., Mr. Sydney Hodges, Mr. A. Gregory, Mr. W. Crossing, Mr. Edward Windeatt, Mr. F. P. S. Amery, Dr. P. Q. Karkeek, Mr. Thos. Wainwright, Mr. W. H. K. Wright, Mr. Walter D. Finch, Mr. Harbottle Reed, Mr. O Railing, Mr. J. Fairweather, Mr. A. S. Stoneman, Mr. E. H. Micklewood, Mr. J. Blampey, Mr. W. P. Ditcham, Mr. C. Jefferd, Mr. T. Vanstone, Mr. W. H. Puddicombe, and Mr. C. Vickery. The special subjects have been contributed as follow: "Introduction," Mr. Sydney Hodges; "The Climate of Devon," Mr. A. Chandler, F.R.M.S.; "Education," Mr. E. H. Shorto; "Flora and Natural History," Dr. E. A. S. Elliott; "Devon Water Sports," Mr. A. H. Bridson; "Sea Fishing," Mr. W. Hearder; "Hunting," "A Veteran"; "Fresh Water Fishing," Mr. Alfred Burden ("Noss Mayo," of The Field); "Cricket," Rev. J. H. Copleston, M.A.; "Golf," compiled by Mr. Chas. R. Rowe; "Football," Mr. Cecil R. M. Clapp; "Cycling," Mr. Herbert M. Rankilor, C.C., C.T.C.; "Devon as a Health-recovering Ground," Dr. W. Harvey; "Health Reports of Principal Towns," by the Medical Officers of Health. For the purpose of working out the scheme the county has been divided into four sections, Central, Southern, Western, and Northern, and this volume deals with the towns and localities in accordance with this arrangement.
