Download or read book On the Sources of the Nitrogen of Vegetation written by John Bennet Lawes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-23 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Sources of the Nitrogen of Vegetation: With Special Reference to the Question Whether Plants Assimilate Free or Uncombined Nitrogen Whatever may be the value at present attached to the particular views of hales regarding the composition and the sources of vegetable matter, we must accord to his labours, in the early part of the eighteenth century, the merit of having been guided by a proper spirit of experimental inquiry. Nor did he fail in applying to good account, and even in extending, the then existing knowledge of the material things around him which were apparently involved in the mysterious processes of vegetable growth. With our present knowledge, however, of the general composition of plants, and of the sources of their constituents, it is easy to see how essential was a proper under standing of the chemistry of the air, and of water, to any true conceptions of the mate rial changes involved in the vegetative process. It can, indeed, hardly excite surprise, that what may be called the germs of our present knowledge of the chemistry of plant growth came forth almost simultaneously with the now adopted views of the compo sitiou of those universal, though not exclusive, media of vegetation - air, and water. Download or read book Plants and Nitrogen written by O. A. M. Lewis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the association that exists between plants and their most important dietary component, nitrogen. The author combines ecological, physiological and biochemical approaches to provide the reader with an overall view of nitrogen in the biosphere and a specific view of nitrogen processing in plants. The processes which make up the nitrogen cycle, including mineralization, immobilization by microbes and nitrification, are discussed and the losses and gains of combined nitrogen from and to the cycle. The part which plants play in this cycling, by their processing of inorganic nitrogen into compounds which are required by plants and animals alike, and the chemistry and production of those compounds, is also covered. Transport of nitrogen compounds within the plant, and the fate of these compounds, is discussed. The final chapter considers the part which humans play in the cycling of nitrogen, with special reference to the nitrogen fertilizers used in agriculture.

Book Nitrogen in the Environment Sources Problems and Management

Download or read book Nitrogen in the Environment Sources Problems and Management written by R.F. Follett and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2001-12-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen in the Environment: Sources, Problems, and Management is the first volume to provide a holistic perspective and comprehensive treatment of nitrogen from field, to ecosystem, to treatment of urban and rural drinking water supplies, while also including a historical overview, human health impacts and policy considerations. It provides a worldwide perspective on nitrogen and agriculture. Nitrogen is one of the most critical elements required in agricultural systems for the production of crops for feed, food and fiber. The ever-increasing world population requires increasing use of nitrogen in agriculture to supply human needs for dietary protein. Worldwide demand for nitrogen will increase as a direct response to increasing population. Strategies and perspectives are considered to improve nitrogen-use efficiency. Issues of nitrogen in crop and human nutrition, and transport and transformations along the continuum from farm field to ground water, watersheds, streams, rivers, and coastal marine environments are discussed. Described are aerial transport of nitrogen from livestock and agricultural systems and the potential for deposition and impacts. The current status of nitrogen in the environment in selected terrestrial and coastal environments and crop and forest ecosystems and development of emerging technologies to minimize nitrogen impacts on the environment are addressed. The nitrogen cycle provides a framework for assessing broad scale or even global strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency. Growing human populations are the driving force that requires increased nitrogen inputs. These increasing inputs into the food-production system directly result in increased livestock and human-excretory nitrogen contribution into the environment. The scope of this book is diverse, covering a range of topics and issues from furthering our understanding of nitrogen in the environment to policy considerations at both farm and national scales.
