And when the shopkeeper wants to take some of Nick's artwork instead of money for payment, he's even happier. But Nick soon realizes that the deal he's made is not quite the bargain he thought it was. His drawing skills have disappeared, and when he returns to the shop he finds himself trapped into a job he didn't sign up for, collecting debts for the mysterious Mr Grey. As his assignments grow steadily more and more traumatic and the shop takes over more and more of his life, the question becomes not when he'll earn his way out . . . but if he'll ever get out at all.

Book excerpt: Some people collect baseball cards, some people collect Beanie Babies... some people collect souls. A vision of a young girl in pain leads Angel, Doyle and Cordelia to the scene just moments too late - the girl of the vision is being taken unconscious to hospital. The only clue as to what could have happened to her is an ornate glass vial found at the foot of her bed, which Doyle recognises as used for the containment of human souls. It seems souls have many uses (other than the obvious): no two are alike, and the soul of an innocent child is one of the most eagerly sought-after items on the demonic black market. Angel knows the value of a human soul, for his is the source of his own salvation. But can he find this young girl's in time to save her? Nor is she the only one in danger. For no sooner has Angel made his presence known than the demonic dealers in souls realise that there's another soul out there which is quite literally priceless...a soul more unique than they could ever have dared to dream...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an exploration of the oceanic connections of the Atlantic world, Michael J. Jarvis recovers a mariner's view of early America as seen through the eyes of Bermuda's seafarers. The first social history of eighteenth-century Bermuda, this book profiles how one especially intensive maritime community capitalized on its position "in the eye of all trade." Jarvis takes readers aboard small Bermudian sloops and follows white and enslaved sailors as they shuttled cargoes between ports, raked salt, harvested timber, salvaged shipwrecks, hunted whales, captured prizes, and smuggled contraband in an expansive maritime sphere spanning Great Britain's North American and Caribbean colonies. In doing so, he shows how humble sailors and seafaring slaves operating small family-owned vessels were significant but underappreciated agents of Atlantic integration. The American Revolution starkly revealed the extent of British America's integration before 1775 as it shattered interregional links that Bermudians had helped to forge. Reliant on North America for food and customers, Bermudians faced disaster at the conflict's start. A bold act of treason enabled islanders to continue trade with their rebellious neighbors and helped them to survive and even prosper in an Atlantic world at war. Ultimately, however, the creation of the United States ended Bermuda's economic independence and doomed the island's maritime economy.

Book American Estrangement Stories

Download or read book American Estrangement Stories written by Saïd Sayrafiezadeh and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Editors' Choice pick One of Literary Hub's Most Anticipated Books of 2021 Stories that capture our times by “a young author who has already established himself as a unique American voice” (Elle). Said Sayrafiezadeh has been hailed by Philip Gourevitch as "a masterful storyteller working from deep in the American grain." His new collection of stories—some of which have appeared in The New Yorker, the Paris Review, and the Best American Short Stories—is set in a contemporary America full of the kind of emotionally bruised characters familiar to readers of Denis Johnson and George Saunders. These are people contending with internal struggles—a son’s fractured relationship with his father, the death of a mother, the loss of a job, drug addiction—even as they are battered by larger, often invisible, economic, political, and racial forces of American society. Searing, intimate, often slyly funny, and always marked by a deep imaginative sympathy, American Estrangement is a testament to our addled times. It will cement Sayrafiezadeh’s reputation as one of the essential twenty-first-century American writers.

Book The Soul of an Entrepreneur

Download or read book The Soul of an Entrepreneur written by David Sax and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning business writer dismantles the myths of entrepreneurship, replacing them with an essential story about the experience of real business owners in the modern economy. We're often told that we're living amidst a startup boom. Typically, we think of apps built by college kids and funded by venture capital firms, which remake fortunes and economies overnight. But in reality, most new businesses are things like restaurants or hair salons. Entrepreneurs aren't all millennials -- more often, it's their parents. And those small companies are the fabric of our economy. The Soul of an Entrepreneur is a business book of a different kind, exploring our work but also our passions and hopes. David Sax reports on the deeply personal questions of entrepreneurship: why an immigrant family risks everything to build a bakery; how a small farmer fights to manage his debt; and what it feels like to rise and fall with a business you built for yourself. This book is the real story of entrepreneurship. It confronts both success and failure, and shows how they can change a human life. It captures the inherent freedom that entrepreneurship brings, and why it matters.

Book The Nature of Good and Evil

Download or read book The Nature of Good and Evil written by Sylvia Browne and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We constantly see the ''senseless violence'' in our world, and it begs the question: ''How can an all-loving God allow this to exist?'' Indeed, many people simply reject any notion of God for this very reason. This book, the third in Sylvia Browne's Journey of the Soul series, gives you the philosophical framework to understand the nature of good and evil - and the role of God in the big picture. When you see how evil originated and why it thrives in our world, you're more prepared to face it and overcome it. Sylvia points out that you need not fear ''evil spirits'' or ''curses'' - which are merely stories bred from ignorance. And how would you like to serve as one of God's warriors of Light? Sylvia explains how to enlist! By combining her philosophical and theological views, Sylvia creates a spiritual umbrella that rises above traditional religion. All paths that lead to knowing God have merit.

Book The Soul s Economy

  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2003-10-16
  • ISBN : 080786143X
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The Soul s Economy written by Jeffrey Sklansky and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-10-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing a seismic shift in American social thought, Jeffrey Sklansky offers a new synthesis of the intellectual transformation entailed in the rise of industrial capitalism. For a century after Independence, the dominant American understanding of selfhood and society came from the tradition of political economy, which defined freedom and equality in terms of ownership of the means of self-employment. However, the gradual demise of the household economy rendered proprietary independence an increasingly embattled ideal. Large landowners and industrialists claimed the right to rule as a privilege of their growing monopoly over productive resources, while dispossessed farmers and workers charged that a propertyless populace was incompatible with true liberty and democracy. Amid the widening class divide, nineteenth-century social theorists devised a new science of American society that came to be called "social psychology." The change Sklansky charts begins among Romantic writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller, continues through the polemics of political economists such as Henry George and William Graham Sumner, and culminates with the pioneers of modern American psychology and sociology such as William James and Charles Horton Cooley. Together, these writers reconceived freedom in terms of psychic self-expression instead of economic self-interest, and they redefined democracy in terms of cultural kinship rather than social compact.
