Book excerpt: This book reveals the personal record and the powerful inspirations of a man who has learned to pray as naturally as to breathe and whose every prayer is answered. Dr. Clark shows the miraculous force of prayer in his life and exemplifies a simple technique of prayer that will offer practical aid and comfort to many people. Dr. Clark says of his book - "It belongs as much to those students of mine whose 'asking, seeking and knocking' drew it forth as it does to me. This truth was hammered out in the laboratory among my students and not dug out of a lonely mountain as a miser might dig his gold. And this much I can say from my use of it in my classes, that if anything proportionately equal to the effect upon a few can be expected from the many, some great - I might add, marvelous - effects will follow its being read."

Book On Disciplining the Soul

Download or read book On Disciplining the Soul written by Ghazzālī and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritual life in Islam begins with riyadat al-nafs, the inner warfare against the ego. Distracted and polluted by worldliness, the lower self has a tendency to drag the human creature down into arrogance and vice. Only by a powerful effort of will can the sincere worshipper achieve the purity of soul which enables him to attain God's proximity. This translation of two chapters from The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din) details the sophisticated spiritual techniques adopted by classical Islam. In the first step, On Disciplining the Soul, which cites copious anecdotes from the Islamic scriptures and biographies of the saints, Ghazali explains how to acquire good character traits, and goes on to describe how the sickness of the heart may be cured. In the second part, Breaking the Two Desires, he focusses on the question of gluttony and sexual desire, concluding, in the words of the Prophet, that 'the best of all matters is the middle way'. The translator has added an introduction and notes which explore Ghazali's ability to make use of Greek as well as Islamic ethics. The work will prove of special interest to those interested in Sufi mysticism, comparative ethics, and the question of sexuality in Islam.

Book excerpt: The Soul's Sincere Desire: Establishing a Personal Relationship with God explores the promises, the privileges, the advantages of establishing and maintaining a personal relationship with God. Prayer is quite often viewed as subject matter for discussion in Sunday/Church school, weekly Bible studies, or it is even preached during Sunday morning sermons. It appears, the early disciples of Jesus, in their daily interaction and observation of Jesus, their leader/teacher, believed themselves to be deficient in prayer. When asked to teach them to pray, Jesus began his teaching with much confidence, adamantly uttering, "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. . ." There are many people who believe themselves superior to others. Jesus taught relationship with God is inclusive, experiential, and experimental.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine, the man with upturned eye, with pen in the left hand, and a burning heart in the right (as he is usually represented), is a philosophical and theological genius of the first order, towering like a pyramid above his age, and looking down commandingly upon succeeding centuries. He had a mind uncommonly fertile and deep, bold and soaring; and with it, what is better, a heart full of Christian love and humility. He stands of right by the side of the greatest philosophers of antiquity and of modern times. We meet him alike on the broad highways and the narrow footpaths, on the giddy Alpine heights and in the awful depths of speculation, wherever philosophical thinkers before him or after him have trod. As a theologian he is facile princeps, at least surpassed by no church father, schoolman, or reformer. With royal munificence he scattered ideas in passing, which have set in mighty motion other lands and later times. He combined the creative power of Tertullian with the churchly spirit of Cyprian, the speculative intellect of the Greek church with the practical tact of the Latin. He was a Christian philosopher and a philosophical theologian to the full.

Book excerpt: “Desire is here to stay. The challenge we all face, and which I intend to guide you through, is to learn how to take into account the full measure of who you are and use the positive force of all four of your soul’s desires to lead you to your best life.” —Rod Stryker According to ancient Yogic tradition, your soul has four distinct desires: • The desire for purpose, the drive to become who you are meant to be • The desire for the means (money, security, health) to prosper in this world • The desire for pleasures like intimacy, beauty, and love • The desire for spiritual fulfillment and lasting freedom Learning to honor these four desires is the key to happiness, and to a complete and balanced life. But how can you discern what will truly satisfy your desires? How can you increase your capacity to achieve them? What if your desires seem to conflict with one another? Is it really possible to live a spiritual life while also wanting material pleasures and success? For more than three decades, master teacher Rod Stryker has taught yoga in the context of its deepest philosophy. His course, called The Yoga of Fulfillment™, has helped thousands recognize their soul’s call to greatness and to achieve their dreams. Now, in this wise and richly practical book, he has distilled those broad teachings into a roadmap for becoming the person you were meant to be. It is filled with revealing true stories, provocative exercises, and practices for unlocking your inner guidance. And even if you’ve never done a yoga pose, you can follow this step-by-step process to: • discover your soul’s unique purpose—the one you came into this world to fulfill. • recognize the goal(s) you need to focus on at any given time and enliven your capacity to reach them. • overcome self-defeating ideas and behavior. • recruit your deepest energies and strengthen your resolve to meet any challenge. • learn to live with joy at every stage of your growth. The Four Desires is nothing less than a complete path toward living your best life possible—a life that is rich in meaning and in means, a life that attracts and emanates happiness, a life that is your unique gift to yourself and the world.

Download or read book Necessity of Prayer written by Edward M. Bounds and published by CCEL. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Necessity of Prayer, Edward Bounds, a 20th century pastor and lawyer, suggests that prayer is an essential part of the Christian believer's life. He writes, "the Christian soldier, if he fight to win, must pray much." Bounds' book, however, is not simply a list of prayers for one to work through, but also a discourse on the very nature of prayer. He connects the nature of prayer to other features of the Christian life, such as faith, reverence, patience, hope, character, conduct, and faithfulness. Bounds' passion for prayer--which compelled him to write nine books on the topic--shines through in this work, and cannot but help motivate those who read it to also see the necessity of prayer. Perfect for individual study, Bounds' book is sure to change the way one prays. -Tim Perrine, CCEL Staff Writer
