Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul's Exodus and Pilgrimage IN sending forth a second edition of The Soul's Exodus and Pilgrimage, I should be ungrateful indeed, if I did not express my very warm sense of the cordiality with which it has been noticed by the critics of the press, and received by the public at large; if I may form an estimate from the fact that a new edition has been called for so soon. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ni The Way of the Wilderness. But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red Sea.?Exod. xiii. 18. Thesr words expound to us a whole philosophy of life. The Way of the Wilderness has become a household word in Christendom, and this decision of Jehovah is the proclamation of the law of man's earthly life. It repeats, substantially on the same grounds, and for the same reasons, the first sentence on the man who had made himself a slave by sin. My text is a new and illustrated comment on the words, And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life: thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dustshalt thou return. Gen. iii. 17-19. Kead also Exodus xiii. 17?22. These passages should be read together, for together they explain the toils, struggles, sufferings, and desert wanderings of this our life. Palestine is the England of the East. It is the only natural home in those regions of a free, independent, industrious, and noble people. Cyrus expressed a deep truth, which is one of the chief keys to human history, when he said sadly, after the settlement of his hardy Persians in the rich Mesopotamian plains, The soil which nourishes such fruits and flowers will not nourish warriors. This relation between the people and their home had more to do than any careless student of history would suppose, with the strength and liberty, the prosperity and gl...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Exodus IN preparing these studies of the Book of Exodus the writer has made use, for the lit eral meaning, of the recent researches of archae ologists and exegetes, and, for the spiritual meaning, of the interpretation given in the Arcana Coelestia, anonymously published in London in the years 1749 to 1756, and known to have been written by Emanuel Swedenborg, whose training as a man of science qualified him to study rationally the symbolism of Holy' Scripture, which Philo judaeus, Origen, Boehme and other good men had sought to explain, but without the necessary scientific prepara tion, and therefore with a result which was as alchemy to chemistry or as astrology to astronomy. Book Pilgrims in Their Own Land

Download or read book Pilgrims in Their Own Land written by Martin E. Marty and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1985-08-06 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pilgrims in Their Own Land is Martin E. Marty's vivid chronological account of the people and events that carved the spiritual landscape of America. It is in one sense a study of migration, with each wave of immigrants bringing a set of religious beliefs to a new world. The narrative unfolds through sharply detailed biographical vignettes—stories of religious "pathfinders," including William Penn, Mary Baker Eddy, Henry David Thoreau, and many other leaders of movements, both marginal and mainstream. In addition, Marty considers the impact of religion on social issues such as racism, feminism, and utopianism. And engrossing, highly readable, and comprehensive history, Pilgrims in Their Own Land is written with respect, appreciation, and insight into the multitude of religious groups that represent expressions of spirituality in America.

But I may remind my self and others, that the only real understanding Of any portion of Holy Scripture is that conveyed to the heart by the Spirit of God. And, indeed, throughout, my great object has been, not to supersede the constant and prayerful use Of the Bible itself, but rather to lead to those Scriptures, which alone are able to make wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
