Book excerpt: LRRPs had to be the best. Anything less meant certain death. When Ed Emanuel was handpicked for the first African American special operations LRRP team in Vietnam, he knew his six-man team couldn’t have asked for a tougher proving ground than Cu Chi in the summer of 196868. Home to the largest Viet cong tunnel complex in Vietnam, Cu Chi was the deadly heart of the enemy’s stronghold in Tay Ninh Province. Team 2/6 of Company F, 51st Infantry, was quickly dubbed the Soul Patrol, a gimmicky label that belied the true depth of their courage. Stark and compelling, Emanuel’s account provides an unforgettable look at the horror and the heroism that became the daily fare of LRRPs in Vietnam. Every mission was a tightrope walk between life and death as Emanuel’s team penetrated NVA bases, sidestepped lethal booby traps, or found themselves ambushed and forced to fight their way back to the LZ to survive. Emanuel’s gripping memoir is an enduring testament to the valor of all American LRRPs, who courageously risked their lives so that others might be free.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Soul Patrol is committed to teaching the fundamental principles of God's Word and dedicated to making resources available that will help equip you for evangelism. In order for us to be effective in evangelism, we must first understand the five-fold ministry given to the church. The Lord has equipped the church but we need to know those that labor among us and understand their ministry call. Everyone should witness for the Lord, but the Evangelist should be in the forefront with evangelism. In order to establish a soul winning growth in the church, leaders must acknowledge the Evangelist as an integral part of the five-fold Body of Christ and empower them to use their gifts of evangelism. Regardless of our calling in ministry, we can learn from each other. We all have different gifts but when the five-fold ministry works together and every joint in the body fulfill its responsibility then we can effectively get the job done. Soul Patrol will provide you with the essential building blocks for a richer walk with God, and motivate you for kingdom building. Read this book and ignite your passion to reach those who do not know Christ. Gain spiritual understanding and discover a new dimension of Spirit-led evangelism. Soul Patrol is designed to teach new converts as well as seasoned believers how to go out and spread the gospel good news about Jesus Christ. This book can be used either for individual or for group study. Many people are looking for a church that's alive evangelistically. Growing churches put the work of evangelism first into the hands of the Evangelist and then empower the entire congregation to evangelize. The mission field is in our own neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and within our extended families. We pray that God will use you in a mighty way to go and compel the lost to accept the Lord Jesus Christ. SOUL PATROL GOALS Motivate and encourage you to witness. Identify hindrances and obstacles to witnessing. Teach you how to effectively witness. Teach you how prayer empowers you to become a fruitful witness. Introduce role-plays as a vehicle for developing witnessing skills (when book is used for group studies). Teach you how to use God's word in sharing your faith.

Book excerpt: Organizers, activists, artists and community members share their struggles in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina. Floodlines is a firsthand account of community, culture, and resistance in New Orleans. The book weaves the stories of gay rappers, Mardi Gras Indians, Arab and Latino immigrants, public housing residents, and grassroots activists in the years before and after Katrina. From post-Katrina evacuee camps to torture testimony at Angola Prison to organizing with the family members of the Jena Six, Floodlines tells the stories behind the headlines from an unforgettable time and place in history. Praise for Floodlines “This is the most important book I’ve read about Katrina and what came after. In the tradition of Howard Zinn this could be called “The People’s History of the Storm.” Jordan Flaherty was there on the front lines.” —Eve Ensler, playwright of The Vagina Monologues, activist and founder of V-Day “Jordan Flaherty brings the sharp analysis and dedication of a seasoned organizer to his writing, and insightful observation to his reporting. He unfailingly has his ear to the ground in a city that continues to reveal the floodlines of structural racism in America.” —Tram Nguyen, author of We Are All Suspects Now: Untold Stories from Immigrant Communities after 9/11 “Flaherty pulls no punches . . . . Readers will be compelled, depressed, disturbed, and angered by what they find in this well-written report. Crucial reading.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Book Black Rage in New Orleans

Download or read book Black Rage in New Orleans written by Leonard N. Moore and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black Rage in New Orleans, Leonard N. Moore traces the shocking history of police corruption in the Crescent City from World War II to Hurricane Katrina and the concurrent rise of a large and energized black opposition to it. In New Orleans, crime, drug abuse, and murder were commonplace, and an underpaid, inadequately staffed, and poorly trained police force frequently resorted to brutality against African Americans. Endemic corruption among police officers increased as the city's crime rate soared, generating anger and frustration among New Orleans's black community. Rather than remain passive, African Americans in the city formed antibrutality organizations, staged marches, held sit-ins, waged boycotts, vocalized their concerns at city council meetings, and demanded equitable treatment. Moore explores a staggering array of NOPD abuses—police homicides, sexual violence against women, racial profiling, and complicity in drug deals, prostitution rings, burglaries, protection schemes, and gun smuggling—and the increasingly vociferous calls for reform by the city's black community. Documenting the police harassment of civil rights workers in the 1950s and 1960s, Moore then examines the aggressive policing techniques of the 1970s, and the attempts of Ernest "Dutch" Morial—the first black mayor of New Orleans—to reform the force in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Even when the department hired more African American officers as part of that reform effort, Moore reveals, the corruption and brutality continued unabated in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Dramatic changes in departmental leadership, together with aid from federal grants, finally helped professionalize the force and achieved long-sought improvements within the New Orleans Police Department. Community policing practices, increased training, better pay, and a raft of other reform measures for a time seemed to signal real change in the department. The book's epilogue, "Policing Katrina," however, looks at how the NOPD's ineffectiveness compromised its ability to handle the greatest natural disaster in American history, suggesting that the fruits of reform may have been more temporary than lasting. The first book-length study of police brutality and African American protest in a major American city, Black Rage in New Orleans will prove essential for anyone interested in race relations in America's urban centers.

Book Hell with the Lid Off

Download or read book Hell with the Lid Off written by Ed Gruver and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hell with the Lid Off looks at the ferocious five-year war waged by Pittsburgh and Oakland for NFL supremacy during the turbulent seventies. The roots of their rivalry dated back to the 1972 playoff game in Pittsburgh that ended with the “Immaculate Reception,” Franco Harris’s stunning touchdown that led the Steelers to a win over the Raiders in their first postseason meeting. That famous game ignited a fiery rivalry for NFL supremacy. Between 1972 and 1977, the Steelers and the Raiders—between them boasting an incredible twenty-six Pro Football Hall of Famers—collided in the playoffs five straight seasons and in the AFC title game three consecutive years. Both teams favored force over finesse and had players whose forte was intimidation. Pittsburgh’s Steel Curtain defense featured Mean Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, and Mel Blount, the latter’s heavy hits forcing an NFL rule in his name. The Raiders countered with “The Assassin,” Jack Tatum, Skip Thomas (aka “Dr. Death”), George Atkinson, and Willie Brown in their memorable secondary. Each of their championships crowned the eventual Super Bowl winner, and their bloodcurdling encounters became so violent and vicious that they transcended the NFL and had to be settled in a U.S. district court. With its account of classic games, legendary owners, coaches, and players with larger-than-life personalities, Hell with the Lid Off is a story of turbulent football and one of the game’s best-known rivalries.

Book Bidding for the Mainstream

Download or read book Bidding for the Mainstream written by Barbara Korte and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at a sector of black and Asian British film and television as it presented itself in the 1990s and early 2000s. For this period, a ‘mainstreaming’ of black and Asian British film has been observed in criticism and theory and articulated by an increasing number of practitioners themselves, referring to changing modes of production, distribution and reception and implying a more popular and commercial orientation of certain media products. This idea is a leitmotif for the authors’ readings of recent films and examples of television drama, including such diverse products as Young Soul Rebels and Babymother, East Is East and Bend It Like Beckham, The Buddha of Suburbia and White Teeth. These analyses are supplemented with a look at earlier landmark productions (like Pressure) as well as relevant social, institutional and aesthetic frameworks. The book closes with a selection of statements by black and Asian media practitioners who operate from within Britain’s cultural industries: Mike Phillips, Horace Ové, Julian Henriques, Parminder Vir and Gurinder Chadha.

Book This Ain t Chicago

  • Author : Zandria F. Robinson
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2014-04-15
  • ISBN : 1469614235

Download or read book This Ain t Chicago written by Zandria F. Robinson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Zandria Robinson returned home to interview African Americans in Memphis, she was often greeted with some version of the caution "I hope you know this ain't Chicago." In this important new work, Robinson critiques ideas of black identity constructed through a northern lens and situates African Americans as central shapers of contemporary southern culture. Analytically separating black southerners from their migrating cousins, fictive kin, and white counterparts, Robinson demonstrates how place intersects with race, class, gender, and regional identities and differences. Robinson grounds her work in Memphis--the first big city heading north out of the Mississippi Delta. Although Memphis sheds light on much about the South, Robinson does not suggest that the region is monolithic. Instead, she attends to multiple Souths, noting the distinctions between southern places. Memphis, neither Old South nor New South, sits at the intersections of rural and urban, soul and post-soul, and civil rights and post-civil rights, representing an ongoing conversation with the varied incarnations of the South, past and present.
