Book The Eruption of Soufriere Hills Volcano Montserrat from 2000 to 2010

Download or read book The Eruption of Soufriere Hills Volcano Montserrat from 2000 to 2010 written by G. Wadge and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1995 to present eruption of Soufrière Hills Volcano on Montserrat is one of the most important and best-studied eruptions of an explosive andesitic volcano. This volume presents scientific findings from the period between 2000 and 2010; it follows on from Memoir 21, which focused on the early years of activity between 1995 and 1999. In addition to descriptions and analysis of the growth, collapse and explosions associated with lava domes, there are papers on the deformation of the volcano caused by the deep magma, the petrology and geochemistry of the lavas and associated gases. Of particular note are: an overview of the insights into the deep structure of the volcano that resulted from a major international seismic tomography experiment; and an analysis of the quantitative risk assessment process that has run now for most of the eruption, the longest such continuous assessment in the world.

Book excerpt: Two-thirds of Montserrat, the author's homeland, has been devastated by continuous eruptions of the Soufriere Hills volcanoes. Montserrat is a small Island of the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, just forty square miles, but it has seven active volcanoes. In Montserrat on My Mind, the author has included several stories of Montserrat before the eruptions, and some during the crisis. Some stories have a tint of mystery, others a touch of Montserrat's humor, but all generally tell tales of Montserrat with a Caribbean flavor. There are three poems which relate to the volcano and the author's prayerful hope that Montserrat will rise again from the tons of magma that have buried so many of its picturesque villages, including its capital, the once thriving Plymouth. The author's Village, Kinsale, exists no more. Unfortunately, Montserrat was almost anonymous before its volcanic eruptions. Now, it is an open laboratory for volcanologists, a vacation haven for videographers, and curiosity seekers. They know Montserrat as a gray land drooping under the weight of pyroclastic flow, but the author remembers it as The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, where the serrated mountains stood like green giants in the Caribbean scenery.

Book The 2020 21 Eruption of La Soufri re Volcano St Vincent

Download or read book The 2020 21 Eruption of La Soufri re Volcano St Vincent written by R.E.A. Robertson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2024-01-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic eruptions are complex and inherently uncertain, making the management of a potentially explosive eruption on a small island with limited resources extremely difficult. This volume presents scientific findings from the 2020–21 eruption of La Soufrière Volcano, on the island of St Vincent in the Eastern Caribbean. This involved three months of effusive activity that escalated rapidly to 13 days of explosive activity, beginning with an intense two days of near-continuous ash venting and explosions. The book contains an introduction and 17 papers, split into two parts: the first presents geological and volcanological advances, whereas the second documents and analyses the impacts of the eruption and the challenges presented for the management of the volcanic crisis. This volume represents both significant contributions to the knowledge of the Soufrière eruptive system and important insights into the ways and means by which volcanic eruptions of this type impact on populations at risk. It also provides detailed insights into the most effective communication processes through this type of crisis.

Book An Archaeological History of Montserrat in the West Indies

Download or read book An Archaeological History of Montserrat in the West Indies written by John F. Cherry and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montserrat is a small island in the Leeward islands of the eastern Caribbean and at present a British Overseas Territory. It has suffered greatly in recent times, first from the devastations of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and since 1995 from the still-ongoing eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano that has caused two-thirds of the island’s population to emigrate and left half the island a dangerous exclusion zone. Archaeological research here began only in the late 1970s, but work over the past four decades has now made it possible to present an archaeological history of Montserrat, from the earliest known traces of human activity on the island about 5,000 years ago to the present. This book draws on all the available archaeological evidence (including that from the co-authors’ own island-wide survey and excavation project since 2010), as well as newly available archival documents, to trace this little island’s long history and heritage. This is not the story of an isolated and remote island: Montserrat is shown rather to be a place intricately connected to the flows of people and goods that have travelled between islands and across the Atlantic at various points in time, both Amerindian and historical. Despite its small size and seeming irrelevance, Montserrat has in fact always been networked into regional and global systems of connectivity. An underlying theme of this volume is resilience. It presents insights from the archaeological and documentary evidence on how the island’s inhabitants have coped with often adverse conditions throughout the course of its history – hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, slavery, disease, invasions, and impoverishment – all while remaining proudly connected to heritage that celebrates the accomplishments of island residents.

Book Introduction to Volcanic Seismology

Download or read book Introduction to Volcanic Seismology written by Vyacheslav M Zobin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic seismology represents the main, and often the only, tool to forecast volcanic eruptions and to monitor the eruption process. This book describes the main types of seismic signals at volcanoes, their nature and spatial and temporal distributions at different stages of eruptive activity. Following from the success of the first edition, published in 2003, the second edition consists of 19 chapters including significant revision and five new chapters. Organized into four sections, the book begins with an introduction to the history and topic of volcanic seismology, discussing the theoretical and experimental models that were developed for the study of the origin of volcanic earthquakes. The second section is devoted to the study of volcano-tectonic earthquakes, giving the theoretical basis for their occurrence and swarms as well as case stories of volcano-tectonic activity associated with the eruptions at basaltic, andesitic, and dacitic volcanoes. There were 40 cases of volcanic eruptions at 20 volcanoes that occurred all over the world from 1910 to 2005, which are discussed. General regularities of volcano-tectonic earthquake swarms, their participation in the eruptive process, their source properties, and the hazard of strong volcano-tectonic earthquakes are also described. The third section describes the theoretical basis for the occurrence of eruption earthquakes together with the description of volcanic tremor, the seismic signals associated with pyroclastic flows, rockfalls and lahars, and volcanic explosions, long-period and very-long-period seismic signals at volcanoes, micro-earthquake swarms, and acoustic events. The final section discuss the mitigation of volcanic hazard and include the methodology of seismic monitoring of volcanic activity, the examples of forecasting of volcanic eruptions by seismic methods, and the description of seismic activity in the regions of dormant volcanoes. This book will be essential for students and practitioners of volcanic seismology to understand the essential elements of volcanic eruptions. Provides a comprehensive overview of seismic signals at different stages of volcano eruption. Discusses dozens of case histories from around the world to provide real-world applications. Illustrations accompany detailed descriptions of volcano eruptions alongside the theories involved.
