Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poems of Sir Philip Sidney, Vol. 2 of 2: For the First Time Collected and Collated With the Original and Early Editions and Mss.; I. From the Countesse of Pembroke's Arcadia, II. Forty-Three Psalms of David, III. Glossarial Index For reasons stated in the Preface (vol. The text followed in the Poems from Arcadia' is that of 1613 but throughout I have had before me those of 1590, 1593, 1598, 1605, 1627, 1655, and later. In Notes and Illustrations at close of the poems in this division such few various readings as seemed noticeable are recorded. No. Xxix., which appeared in the 1590 edition of Arcadia, was suppressed in all after-editions. No. Lxviii which Mr. Collier, in his Poetical Decameron' (s. Quotes from Haring ton's Orlando Furioso as 'omitted in the folio Arcadias, ' occurs in the edition of 1598 and subsequently. No. X1. Is placed among the 'certaine Sonets, ' &c., as well as in the Arcadia itself, in 1605 and other editions. As explained in the places, the two closing pieces of the series are derived from other sources - the last never before printed. We give these Poems in the order of their occurrence in the Arcadia, and as in Astrophel and Stella, and throughout, have furnished headings to those that have none in the original, fetched from the prose context. The Arcadia Poems lose almost nothing by being separated from the prose, albeit the student-reader will occasionally perhaps wish to consult it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Sir Philip Sidney Renowned Sir phitip Sidney (with Other matters; see the title-page), was given to it presumably by the unknown P. B., the editor, certainly not by Greville himself In a manuscript copy of the work, of which we shall hear more hereafter, the title is simply A Dedication and Greville's primary oh Jcet was to dedicate his poems, 'these exer cises of my youth, ' as he calls them, to that Worthy Sir Philip Sidney, so long since departed.' The Dedication spreads out, in' the unchannelled abundance of our earlier prose and the retired soliloquizing of Greville's older age, into a 'treatise in which the primary object is clean forgotten in the rush of the writer's memory of those two subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poems of Sir Philip Sidney, Vol. 1 of 3: Edited With Memorial Introduction and Notes by Alexander B. Grosart Perhaps it will generally be admitted that it is one of the most inexplicable of the many 'Curiosities' and anomalies of our Literature, that ours should be, to all intents and purposes, the first collective edition, as it is absolutely the first critical text, of the Poems of Sir Philip Sidney. Following the Trade edition of the Works (3 vols. 12mo, 1739), Gray, in his 'Miscellaneous Works' of Sidney (Oxford, 1829: Boston, 1860, 8vo), satisfied himself with 'Astrophel and Stella, ' and 'Certaine Sonnets' and other Poems, which he placed under the heading 'Miscellaneous Poems, ' - utterly ignoring the much more numerous Poems contained in the 'Arcadia' and 'Psalmes.' He added from Dr. Bliss's edition of the Athenae Oxon. and Bibliog. Miscellanies, and elsewhere, slightly. There is no other available edition. So that it must surely be regarded as a desideratum worth supplying, to reproduce, as we herein do, the complete Poems of Sidney. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Philip Sidney Bourne's, is slighter in substance. It has its own value as a critical and conscientious study of Sidney under several aspects; and in one or two particulars it supple ments or corrects the more considerable work of Mr. Bourne. For Sidney's writings Professor Arber's reprint of the Defence of Poesy, and Dr. Grosert's edition of the poems in two volumes (the Fuller Worthies' Library, will be found indispensable. In composing this sketch I have ireely availed myself of all that has been published about Sidney. It has been my object to present the ascertained facts of his brief life, and my own opinions regarding his character and literary works, in as succinct a form as I found possible. Book Astrophel and Stell

Book excerpt: SIR PHILIP SIDNEY: ASTROPHEL AND STELLA: ELIZABETHAN SONNET CYCLE Sir Philip Sidney's 'Astrophel and Stella' is one of the major Elizabethan sonnet sequences, reprinted here in an attractive new edition. 'Astrophel and Stella' is a sonnet cycle of love poetry, and some of the finest verse in the English language. The book includes a note on Sir Philip Sidney, illustrations, and suggestions for further reading. Each poem has a page to itself. It's a useful edition for students. Sir Philip Sidney is one of the most well-known of Elizabethan sonneteers, and a key poet in contributing towards the fashionable success of the genre. Born in 1554 in Penshurst in Kent, Sidney was educated in Oxford (Christ Church) and Shrewsbury. Sidney was an ambassador (to the German Emperor in 1577), and involved in European politics (his European tour was 1572-1575). He was knighted in 1583, and was governor of Flushing in 1585. He died aged 31 in 1586, following wounds sustained in the Battle of Zutphen. Sir Philip Sidney's works include 'Arcadia' (1577/ 86), 'Defence of Poetry', translations of psalms and du Bartas, sonnets for Penelope Rich (c. 1581), and 'Astrophel and Stella'. 'Astrophel and Stella' was first published in 1591, and again in 1598 (where it was at back of the edition of 'Arcadia'). It was apparently edited by the Countess of Pembroke, one of the principal figures in Elizabethan poetry. Illustrated. Bibliography and note. ISBN 9781861711762. 160 pages. www.crmoon.com
