Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sonnet in England and Other Essays Many students of literature have watched with interest the attempts which have been recently made by some of our younger poets to naturalise in England certain archaic forms of verse which were at one time popular in France, and which have of late years been revived in that country by some of the members of the neo-romantic school. So far the attempt cannot be said to have met with much success. We have had a few rondels, rondeaux, triolets, villanelles, ballades, and the like, often deftly constructed, and sometimes exhibiting a grace so exquisite that it is on the point of passing into absolute beauty; but, after all, our English poets do not seem to move freely in these Gallican fetters, and English readers, as a body, have treated the. Book New Essays on Shakespeare s Sonnets

Download or read book New Essays on Shakespeare s Sonnets written by Hilton Landry and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The essays presented here were written for this book by scholars who are either specialists in the Sonnets or in their chosen topic. I felt that it would provide an opportunity for those who have been making some of the chief contributions to offer further and perhaps better thoughts on the Sonnets, and for others to fill in obvious gaps by studying certain aspects of the poems which had been neglected or ignored. Naturally, there is among the writers considerable variety in approach and point of view, not least in the matter of which texts of the Sonnets to use. But this is merely in the inevitable salutary result of allowing independent and conscientious scholars to 'have their say.' And in the nature of the case some essays are moretechnical than others, yet I think it is quite accurate to say that lucidity generally prevails." -Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronwen Wallace Memorial Award-winning poet Sonnet L'Abbé returns with her third collection, in which a mixed-race woman decomposes her inheritance of Shakespeare by breaking open the sonnet and inventing an entirely new poetic form. DOROTHY LIVESAY POETRY PRIZE FINALIST RAYMOND SOUSTER AWARD FINALIST How can poetry grapple with how some cultures assume the place of others? How can English-speaking writers use the English language to challenge the legacy of colonial literary values? In Sonnet's Shakespeare, one young, half-dougla (mixed South Asian and Black) poet tries to use "the master's tools" on the Bard's "house," attempting to dismantle his monumental place in her pysche and in the poetic canon. In a defiant act of literary patricide and a feat of painstaking poetic labour, Sonnet L'Abbé works with the pages of Shakespeare's sonnets as a space she will inhabit, as a place of power she will occupy. Letter by letter, she sits her own language down into the white spaces of Shakespeare's poems, until she overwhelms the original text and effectively erases Shakespeare's voice by subsuming his words into hers. In each of the 154 dense new poems of Sonnet's Shakespeare sits one "aggrocultured" Shakespearean sonnet--displaced, spoken over, but never entirely silenced. L'Abbé invented the process of Sonnet's Shakespeare to find a way to sing from a body that knows both oppression and privilege. She uses the procedural techniques of Oulipian constraint and erasure poetries to harness the raw energies of her hyperconfessional, trauma-forged lyric voice. This is an artist's magnum opus and mixed-race girlboy's diary; the voice of a settler on stolen Indigenous territories, a sexual assault survivor, a lover of Sylvia Plath and Public Enemy. Touching on such themes as gender identity, pop music, nationhood, video games, and the search for interracial love, this book is a poetic achievement of undeniable scope and significance.

Book Comparison and Contrast Essay Shakespeare s Sonnet 60 vs Sonnet 144

This book was released on 2008-03-28 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Wuppertal (Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften), course: Literaturwissenschaftlicher Grundkurs, language: English, abstract: Shakespeare's sonnets are a collection of 154 poems. Sonnets 153 and 154 do not belong to the real collection because they are adaptations of classical antic verses about Cupid and therefore distinguished from the first 152 poems because Shakespeare treated the Patriarchal convention of the sonnets in his own way. Shakespeare treats these themes in his own, distinctive fashion—most notably by addressing the poems of love and praise not to a fair woman but instead to a young man; and by including a second subject of passion: a woman of questionable attractiveness and virtue. The sonnets, taken together, are frequently described as a sequence, and this is generally divided into two sections. Shakespeare Sonnets 1-126 focus on a handsome young man and the speaker's emotional friendship with him that could sometimes be interpreted either as asexual or sexual. The nature of this friendship is treated as ideal love as in the Patriarchal convention. Sonnets 127-152 focus on the speaker's relationship with a woman the so-called ‘dark lady’ who is the counterpart of the innocent beautiful maid in Patriarchal sonnets. The lyrical I has an “obsessive”1 sexual love affair with her. I compare sonnets numbered 60 and 144 because the first one deals with the universal concerns of time and its passing and the second took note of the speaker ́s seperation of physical love and more down-to-earth sensations connected with it. Moreover it is the only sonnet that explicitly refers to both the Dark Lady and the young man. This sonnets are neatly organized following the structure of the Shakespearean sonnet and its common rhyme scheme abab, cdcd, efef,gg with a iambic pentameter. ---Bibliographie > Hühn, Peter. (1995). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, University of Nottingham, course: Early Modern Love, language: English, abstract: Love has always been a recurring popular theme in literature because it raises a lot of intriguing questions. In this short essay, I want to explore the relationship between love and its presentation within one specific literary genre - the Elizabethan sonnet. By way of introduction, I will outline the nature of love and some sonnetary characteristics. I will then bring both concepts together to identify common features. Finally, the theme of love in one selected sonnet will be explored.
