Book Poe and the Idea of Music

Download or read book Poe and the Idea of Music written by Charity McAdams and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Allan Poe often set the scenes of his stories and poems with music: angels have the heartstrings of lutes, spirits dance, and women speak with melodic voices. These musical ideas appear to mimic the ways other authors, particularly Romanticists, used music in their works to represent a spiritual ideal artistic realm. Music brought forth the otherworldly, and spoke to the possible transcendence of the human spirit. Yet, Poe's music differs from these Romantic notions in ways that, although not immediately perceptible in each individual instance, cohere to invert Romantic idealism. For Poe, artistic transcendence is impossible, the metaphysical realm is unreachable, and humans cannot perceive anything but their own failure of spirit. In this book, I show how we can look at Poe's poems and stories on the whole to discover this, and in doing so, unpack some of Poe's mysticism along the way.

Archon is the first of the Books of Raziel, a truly fantastic and very hip new take on heaven’s warriors that readers of the angelic novels of Danielle Trussoni, Lauren Kate, Becca Fitzpatrick, and Alexandra Adornetto are sure to adore. Archon is new wave urban fantasy, a tale of the supernatural that brilliantly blends passion, obsession, horror, and suspense in a way that will appeal to dark fantasy fans and paranormal romance readers equally. Sabrina Benulis’s angels are creepy, sexy, and totally awesome—and, like Anne Rice’s amoral, ambiguous, and addicting vampires, they will seduce and terrify you at the same time.

Another is the psychotic celestial beings who might decide to follow you. The end has finally come for the shopping mall, the Flay tribe and possibly everything else too. Carla, Tully and their friends have taken the only way out—another wormhole. It drops them in Lutecia, a city in a parallel world, where everything is green, society is peaceful and they learn to develop their innate psychic talents. They are taught the true history of the universe, what Wormwood has done to Carla's dad and what he's really after. Unfortunately, one of the things Wormwood is after is Carla and Tully. The Sages of Lutecia form a desperate plan. Carla and Tully will lure Wormwood to the gateway to Hell, before he and his souleaters reduce this world to the same dead wasteland as ours. Once they have him on the brink of the pit, all they have to do is push him in. Simple. Well...not really. Pursued by Wormwood's gray men, golems and his army of dead souls, Carla and Tully travel the star paths, looking for Carla's mother in the Himalayas of our dying world—hoping to catch her in a dream, hoping she'll be able to release Carla's dad from possession and hoping Wormwood doesn't find his third companion, Eblis Azazel, the angel of destruction, whose trumpet will sound the apocalypse in all the worlds.

Book Catalogue Raisonn e as Memoir

Download or read book Catalogue Raisonn e as Memoir written by Dominick Argento and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pulitzer-winning American composer Dominick Argento is known for the care with which he selects the subjects for his works and for the personal involvement that shines through his music. Each chapter of this memoir is based on a particular composition, surrounded by Argento's reflections on the period in his life when the piece was written and its opening performance. Songs about Spring stirs memories of his instructor Nicholas Nabokov (friend of Stravinsky and cousin to Vladimir), with whom he learned to drink martinis, and also of his first collaboration with Carolyn Bailey, the soprano who would later become his wife. In the chapter on Casa Guidi, the 2004 Grammy-winning piece based on letters from Elizabeth Barrett Browning to her sister Henrietta, Argento reveals that the physical Casa Guidi, where Browning lived, was a few blocks from his own apartment in Florence. Providing insight into his compositional process, he also shares the private diary he kept while composing The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
