Bacevich takes stock of a nation with an abiding appetite for war waged at enormous expense by a standing army demonstrably unable to achieve victory.

Book A Long Way Gone

Download or read book A Long Way Gone written by Ishmael Beah and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-02-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My new friends have begun to suspect I haven’t told them the full story of my life. “Why did you leave Sierra Leone?” “Because there is a war.” “You mean, you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other?” “Yes, all the time.” “Cool.” I smile a little. “You should tell us about it sometime.” “Yes, sometime.” This is how wars are fought now: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Child soldiers have been profiled by journalists, and novelists have struggled to imagine their lives. But until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. In A Long Way Gone, Beah, now twenty-five years old, tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he’d been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.

The lesson of clean living was taught by the spoken word, by the moving picture, by the printed page, by the doctor with a scientific thoroughness and by the layman with a frank ness and sometimes a colloquialism which would for once have rendered Mrs. Grundy speechless. As an instrument of virtue, the tract is, of course, of time-honored usage, but the name of George Ade in the list of tract writers is a new and Significant one. Book Training for the Trenches a Practical Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book Training for the Trenches a Practical Handbook Classic Reprint written by Captain Leslie Vickers and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training for the Trenches a Practical Handbook Since the Great European War broke out, printing presses have been busy producing text books, handbooks and guides for soldiers. Military authorities and civilians alike have come to realise that this war has changed many of our old conceptions of strategy and that it has introduced conditions that are entirely unprecedented. New methods have had to be devised - sometimes on the field itself in the midst of the greatest difficulties - for meeting new and novel methods of warfare. Every deadly engine of destruction has called forth some new invention to cope with it. Soldiers have had to live and fight under conditions that to the lay mind, or to the mind of the military men of a few years ago, would seem to be impossible. It is reasonable to assume that the inventive genius of the world will be turned more and more in the direction of the problem of how to construct still more terrible machines of destruction. Download or read book Knowledge for War written by B. C. Lake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knowledge for War: Every Officer's Handbook for the Front The Syllabus is necessarily long and, Owing to the number of Official books and to the0 length at which they deal with the selected subjects, most young officers find it difficult to cover the full course in the short time available. There is also a good deal in the Syllabus which cannot be found in the manuals. In' Knowledge for War references are given to the Official manuals for everything in them touching the prescribed course. Since the manuals were written many new ideas and methods have been adopted, especially from the experience gained during the present war. These have been dealt with in pamphlets issued from time to time by the -war Office. As few young officers have access to them, an attempt is made in the present volume to condense all that is necessary within convenient limits. It must be clearly understood that Knowledge for War is in no way intended to replace the official text books, but should be used in conjunction with them. A copy of the Syllabus, which has been closely adhered to, is printed in the beginning as a guide to the contents of the book. For obvious reasons more than half the book is devoted to Trench Warfare. I feel that no apology is needed for devoting so much space to this important subject in all its aspects, even though it has meant the exclusion of chapters on Open warfare.
