Book The Sun Recorded Through History

Download or read book The Sun Recorded Through History written by J.M. Vaquero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sun is nowadays observed using di?erent techniques that provide an almost instantaneous 3-D map of its structure. Of particular interest is the studyofthevariabilityinthesolaroutputproducedbythedissipationofm- netic energy on di?erent spatial and temporal scales – the so-called magnetic activity. The 11-year cycle is the main feature describing this phenomenon. Apart from its intrinsic scienti?c interest, this topic is worth studying because of the interaction of such processes with the terrestrial environment. A ?eet of space and ground-based observatories are currently monitoring the behaviour of our star on a daily basis. However, solar activity varies not only on this decadal time-scale, as has been attested mainly through two methods: (a) records of the number of sunspots observed on the solar surface from 1610, and (b) the records of 14 10 cosmogenic isotopes, such as Cand Be, measured in tree-rings and i- cores, respectively. The study of the long-term behaviour of solar activity may be comp- mented by the study of historical accounts describing phenomena directly or indirectly related to solar activity. Numerous scienti?c and non-scienti?c d- uments have reported these events and we can make use of them as a proxy of solar activity in past times.

This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2018 solar physics and neutrino research celebrated various historical highlight events. Among them were 80 years of the paper by Hans Bethe discussing solar fusion cycles as energy source of stars, the first results from the Homestake chlorine experiment celebrating 50 years as well as the discovery of neutrino oscillations 20 years ago by Super-Kamiokande. Since the last International Solar Neutrino Conference in 1997, solar neutrino detection was recognized by two Nobel Prizes, given to Raymond Davis Jr. (2002) and Arthur McDonald (2015).The present proceedings volume is based on the given talks and provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of recent developments and discoveries in the field of solar neutrino physics. Articles were written by renowned experts of their field and cover a wide range in experiments and theory from current and future solar neutrino measurements, elemental abundances, nuclear astrophysics, helioseismology, impact on general neutrino physics and more. Further contributions focus on experiments like Homestake, SAGE and GALLEX which are widely known as historic milestones in the field of solar neutrino physics.

Book Solar Energetic Particles

Download or read book Solar Energetic Particles written by Donald V. Reames and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise primer introduces the non-specialist reader to the physics of solar energetic particles (SEP) and systematically reviews the evidence for the two main mechanisms which lead to the so-called impulsive and gradual SEP events. More specifically, the timing of the onsets, the longitude distributions, the high-energy spectral shapes, the correlations with other solar phenomena (e.g. coronal mass ejections), as well as the all-important elemental and isotopic abundances of SEPs are investigated. Impulsive SEP events are related to magnetic reconnection in solar flares and jets. The concept of shock acceleration by scattering on self-amplified Alfvén waves is introduced, as is the evidence of reacceleration of impulsive-SEP material in the seed population accessed by the shocks in gradual events. The text then develops processes of transport of ions out to an observer. Finally, a new technique to determine the source plasma temperature in both impulsive and gradual events is demonstrated. Last but not least the role of SEP events as a radiation hazard in space is mentioned and a short discussion of the nature of the main particle telescope designs that have contributed to most of the SEP measurements is given.

Book Convection in Astrophysics IAU S239

Download or read book Convection in Astrophysics IAU S239 written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convection is ubiquitous throughout the Universe, and during the last three decades it has become the largest factor of uncertainty in theoretical models of stars and in the interpretation of observations on the basis of such models. Recently, numerical simulations of convection have dramatically improved in their potential to take into account both the large scale properties of the flow itself and the microphysical properties of the fluid. Observations have become accurate enough to provide stringent tests for both numerical simulations and models of convection. IAU S239 was held to further understanding of convection, bringing together leading researchers in solar and stellar physics, the physics of planets, and of accretion disks. With reviews, research contributions, and detailed recordings of plenary discussions, this book is a valuable resource for professional astronomers and graduate students interested in the interdisciplinary study of one of the key physical processes in astrophysics.

Download or read book The Hinode Mission written by Takashi Sakurai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Solar-B satellite was launched in the morning of 23 September 2006 (06:36 Japan time) by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (ISAS/JAXA), and was renamed to Hinode (‘sunrise’ in Japanese). Hinode carries three - struments; the X-ray telescope (XRT), the EUV imaging spectrometer (EIS), and the solar optical telescope (SOT). These instruments were developed by ISAS/JAXA in cooperation with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan as domestic partner, and NASA and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (UK) as international partners. ESA and N- wegian Space Center have been providing a downlink station. All the data taken with Hinode are open to everyone since May 2007. This volume combines the ?rst set of instrumental papers of the Hinode mission (the mission overview, EIS, XRT, and the database system) published in volume 243, Number 1 (June 2007), and the second set of papers (four papers on SOT and one paper on XRT) published in Volume 249, Number 2 (June 2008). Another SOT paper cited as Tarbell et al. (2008) in these papers will appear later in Solar Physics.

Book Pathways Through an Eclectic Universe

Download or read book Pathways Through an Eclectic Universe written by Johan Hendrik Knapen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book contains the proceedings of a conference, held on 23-27 April in Tenerife, to discuss recent progress on star formation in galaxies. Presentations took into account advances in related areas such as the structure, dynamics, and evolution of galaxies, their stellar and dark matter components, central black holes as clues to their histories, the physics of the interstellar medium, and the feedback on all spatial scales between star formation and the host galaxy. This volume contains more than a hundred papers on these topics including invited reviews, invited and contributed talks, poster presentations, and two panel discussion sessions. These articles provide an in-depth assessment of the current state of the field, relate observations with theory, and link detailed studies of star formation in our own Galaxy with cosmology. The conference was a celebration of John Beckman's 40 years as an active astrophysicist. A number of varied contributions were made by John's friends and associates, and some of these--in fields such as the history and philosophy of astronomy, or other branches of astronomy not related to the interaction of star formation and galaxy formation--are included in these proceedings."--Publisher's website
