Download or read book The Soils and Agriculture of the Southern States Classic Reprint written by Hugh Hammond Bennett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soils and Agriculture of the Southern States It was the original intention to limit the area discussed in this volume to the region known as the Cotton Belt. As the work progressed, a number of reasons occurred for increasing the size of the territory included. The soils of the Cotton Belt do not stop at the northern limit of cotton production, but they extend far north of that line. The type of agriculture practiced in the Cotton Belt grades into that practiced in the region to the north without any sharp regional division line. The eastern tobacco belt extends far down into the Cotton Belt, corn is grown through almost the whole of the Belt, as well as in the region to the north, and other staple crops of the more northerly regions are, also, staple crops in many parts of the South. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Agriculture The growth of wild plants is determined by two sets of factors, those connected with the soil and those connected with the climate. Cultivated plants are also subject to these same conditions except in So far as these may be modified by human effort. Cultivation is the collective name for all those pro cesses by which man seeks to alter these environ mental conditions, thus making them more favorable for his crops. From its treasury it has been estimated1 that we drew last year (1909) more than and its possibilities are as yet only partially realized. There are still in this country millions of acres which have never felt the plow, while those which are now under cultivation can, by the application of scientific principles, be made to produce many times the present value of their products. How to use and not abuse this great resource is the most important problem which faces the farmer of to-day - one worthy of the best efforts of our most pro found and learned scientists; for upon its solution depends the future prosperity of the nation. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Safe Farming in the Southern States in 1920 Grain sorghums: In connection with corn production we should consider the grain sorghums. It ought to be pretty clear to farmers in western Texas and Oklahoma that corn is an unsafe crop on most of the lands in that territory. In all of the drier sections of Oklahoma and Texas grain sorghums should be the main dependable food and feed crop. The planting of corn in west Texas and Oklahoma should be abandoned except on land which produced a fair return of sound corn in 1918. If there is any increase in corn acreage in either Texas or Oklahoma it should be in the extreme eastern section of both States. The need for grain for food and feed should be met by production of grain sorghums. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Foreign Explorations: As Bearing on the Agricultural Development of the Southern States The introduction of Kiushu rice by the Section of Seed and Plant Introduction of the United States Department of Agriculture in 1899 was the first step taken toward improving the conditions of rice grow ing in southern Louisiana and Texas, and the marked development of the rice industry since that time is in a large measure due to the value of this variety. There were still other problems connected with the rice industry, however, as well as those which concerned the improve ment of extensive tracts of pine. Lands occurring in many of the Southern States, which remained unsolved. These problems could be best approached by first securing all the information available in foreign lands, and Dr. S. A. Knapp was commissioned to go to Asia to make a careful study of the rice industry and to secure such seeds as he might decide were valuable. Dr. Knapp's report deals with the life of the peoples among whom he traveled, as well as with the methods and cost of rice production and the cultivation and production of certain other crops, and alto gether it constitutes a unique contribution to our knowledge of the agriculture and the condition of the farming communities of these countries. The report is submitted for publication as Bulletin No. 35 of the Bureau of Plant Industry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter, Vol. 69: Devoted to Practical and Progressive Agriculture, Horticulture, Trucking, Live Stock and the Fireside; April, 1908 Discussing this subject a few years ago with Professor Newman, of the South Carolina Experiment Station, he told us that in order to demonstrate the truth of the extent to which corn roots would extend to some doubting South Carolina farmers, he had had a corn plant which had grown in well prepared land washed out of the soil by a hose and strong stream of water so as not to break oh any of the roots and rootlets. After hours of working in following the roots to the extremity of their growth, the plant, with all its roots and fibres, was got out of the soil and the roots spread out on a canvass sheet and 'dried. It was then seen that the plant had a root system so large that the canvass, when stretched out in the lecture' room of the College, covered the whole of One side of the room. The capacity of such a root system to extract food from the soil could then be well understood and it became possible to realize that even if the soil was not over-rich such a plant could, when given the Opportunity by proper preparation of the soil, make a good yield of corn, and that if properly supplied with addi tional plant food, a heavy growth of stalks could make almost an unthought of yield of corn. It was such a crop as this, grown under these conditions in South Carolina. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils and Crops of the Farm Plants live and grow. Growth comes from food. Plant food must come from, or through, the soil or air, or both. Plants cannot move about to seek food. They do not have mouths like those of animals. They cannot take in solid substances. Their food must be brought into contact with them and be either liquid or gaseous in form. Finding out of what a plant is composed will help to an understanding of how and from whence it gets its food. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter, Vol. 20: Devoted to Agriculture, Horticulture, and the Household Arts; February, 1860 Of all agricultural subjects, this perhaps is the most' important, and t01a Virginian, the most diificult. Experience affords us little light upon the subject. 1 The practice in Virginia, heretofore, has been to culti vatc our lands more with a view to imme diate. Profit, than with any regard to the future. All the various soils in the/coun try eastward of the mountains, haveffbeeu used 1n the same way, and the same crepsi have been cultivated by all, without regard to the fitness ofo'the soil, or to the situation of the farm. Everything that could be drawn from it has been eagerly taken, with out giving anything in return, by amelio rating creps, manure, or even rest. The land has either borne, in succession, ex hausting etops, or it has been as much or more injured by improper use of its pas ture', as\it is falsely called. Book Southern Field Crops Exclusive of Forage Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Southern Field Crops Exclusive of Forage Plants Classic Reprint written by John Frederick Duggar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Field Crops, (Exclusive of Forage Plants) For high-school use, the matter may be further abridged by the omission of the study of those particular crops that are unsuited to the locality. College students are expected to prepare all the matter in this book, including that in fine print, and all Exercises. Their instructors will probably assign additional work on the crops of chief interest to the locality. These additions will usually take the form of supplementary lectures and of collateral reading selected from the literature cited under each crop. It is scarcely necessary to point out that the use of a text book to afford at least the outline of the subject - matter on crops will enable the student to cover much more ground than would be possible if he relied exclusively on lecture notes. The use of a textbook is also advantageous to the instructor, since it permits him to devote a larger proportion of his time to supplementary lectures, which will direct in creased attention to local problems and practices, suggest methods of agricultural investigation, and discuss the most effective methods of teaching the subject of agriculture.
