Download or read book The Social Results of Early Christianity Classic Reprint written by Charles Schmidt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Results of Early Christianity I have to thank M. Schmidt for permission to trans late his book into English, Dr. Dale for his Preliminary Essay, and J. L. Paton, Esq., for assistance with the classical notes. The completeness with which M. Schmidt gives the authorities upon which his statements rest, adds greatly to the value of his book. Born into a world in which the institutions are at least coloured by Christianity, we can hardly realize either what they have been without it, or to what they may yet rise with a fuller appreciation of its principles and Spirit. Book Towards a Christian Sociology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Towards a Christian Sociology Classic Reprint written by Arthur Joseph Penty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Towards a Christian Sociology IF the position be granted that is assumed by nearly all reformers, that the salvation of society involves among other things its reorganisation on some corporate or co-operative basis, there are two ways in which the problem of reconstruction may be approached. The first of these is the Christian one which, taking its stand on the permanent needs of human nature, assumes the existence of a type of society which may be designated as the normal, because it most perfectly satisfies human needs, and therefore directs its policy towards the recovery and strengthening of everything in life and society that is to be regarded as normal. The other, which is the Socialist one, is altogether destitute of any conception of normality, since, apart from the elementary needs of food, Clothing, and shelter, it treats other human needs as non-essentials, subject to Change and flux. It takes its stand on the supposed truth of a theory of social evolution according to which all social phenomena are to be regarded as relative, and human. Book Social Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Social Christianity Classic Reprint written by Hugh Price Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Christianity For many years I have obstinately resisted the importunity of valued friends who have urged me to publish a volume of sermons. I have not deemed any utterance of mine worthy permanent record. My too busy life affords no time for theological or literary elaboration. But of late the pressure to publish has greatly increased. Above all, it has come to my knowledge that several young Agnostics have been brought to Christ by reading some of the following sermons, which appeared in The Methodist Times. If the Divine Father is pleased to use me thus to bring back to Himself any of my wandering brothers, I dare not consult my own taste or preference any longer. And now that the Rubicon is crossed, I am comforted by the fact that, although the literary form of this volume must bear all the marks of haste inseparable from a very active and varied ministry, the exposition of Christianity which it contains is the slow fruit of a lifetime of observation, reflection, and experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Aspects of Christianity The Sermons in the present volume were preached (with two exceptions) during my residence at Westminster in August and December, 1886. I have indeed endeavoured to enforce the main ideas which they contain at various times during the last thirty years; but the opportunity seemed to require that I should endeavour to bring, as far as I could, into a clear and connected form what had been spoken only fragmentarily before. No one indeed can tell what is the effect which 'the Abbey' and the vast congregations which gather there, eager to listen, produce upon one who first experiences it at the close of life. Of all places in the world 'the Abbey, ' I think, proclaims the social Gospel of Christ with the most touching eloquence. So it was that when I was called to work at Westminster in 1884 I could not but feel with intense force the power of old thoughts, and in the first sermon of my first residence I indicated a line of teaching which I hoped to pursue if the time were given. Some passages from that Sermon will serve as an introduction to what follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Social Value of the Gospel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Social Value of the Gospel Classic Reprint written by Leon Garriguet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Value of the Gospel The basis of durable social work is religion. Its motive power is charity in its Christian sense. The general principles of social well-being and the true spirit of Christianity lead us back to the teachings of Christ. Hitherto we have possessed no Catholic work in English on the precise subject of the social import of the Gospel; and since correct views upon this particular matter are necessary for those engaged in social work, Miss E. Willson accepted the task of translating the volume of M. Leon Garriguet entitled La Valeur Sociale de l'Evangile. The scope of this work is confined to the teachings of the Gospel, the teaching of the Apostolic writings being merely incidentally referred to. Neither does the author deal in any way with the motives or spirit of Christian charity. The purpose of the book is to state the position taken up by Christ on the general questions of wealth, poverty, property, community of goods, socialism and economic progress. It may be here mentioned that quotations have been taken either from the English originals of works referred to, or from English translations of other works, whenever such exist. For the assistance of the general reader a brief account is supplied of the authors whose works are cited in the course of the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Crisis Western civilization is passing through a social revolution unparalleled in history for scope and power. Its coming was inevitable. The religious, political, and intellectual revolutions of the past five centuries, which together created the modern world, necessarily had to culminate in an economic and social revolution such as is now upon us. By universal consent, this social crisis is the overshadowing problem of our generation. The industrial and commercial life of the advanced nations are in the throes of it. In politics all issues and methods are undergoing upheaval and re-alignment as the social movement advances. In the world of thought all the young and serious minds are absorbed in the solution of the social problems. Even literature and art point like compass-needles to this magnetic pole of all our thought. The social revolution has been slow in reaching our country. We have been exempt, not because we had solved the problems, but because we had not yet confronted them. We have now arrived, and all the characteristic conditions of American Hfe will henceforth combine to make the social struggle here more intense than anywhere else. Book The Church and the Social Problem

Download or read book The Church and the Social Problem written by Samuel Plantz and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Social Problem: A Study in Applied Christianity This volume is written with the conviction that the Christian Church of the twentieth century faces a crisis of the utmost importance; and that it can only meet the needs of the age by adapting its teaching and methods of work to the peculiar conditions of our times. This fact has been often pointed out during the past few years by men of masterly power, but it must be confessed that few of the workers in the Church have heard the call and earnestly assumed the task of applying Christian principles to the social problems of our modern life. Many pulpits seem stereotyped in thought and utterance, and many Churches cemented in the forms of their activity. While this condition pertains, there is a demand for the multiplication of literature on Christian Ethics, and the application of the Gospel to society. Book Christianity and the Social Order Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and the Social Order Classic Reprint written by R. J. Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Order It may not be out of place to say a word as to the way in which I have come to be identified with the Socialist movement. The first and most obvious influence in this direction was the study of Christian origins, which led me gradually but irresistibly to see that the first Christian preachers did not know of any other gospel than that of a universal brotherhood on earth. I have never been anything else than a liberal in theology - all assertions to the contrary notwith standing - but my way of presenting the truth in the earlier years of my ministry was necessarily less clear and coherent than at present, for it rested too much on the other-worldism of con ventional Christian preaching. The realisation that this other-worldism was totally absent from primitive Christian thought forced me, like so many others, upon What was practically the Socialist position without any first-hand acquaint ance with the Socialist movement itself. Inow regard Socialism as the practical expression of Christian ethics and the evangel of Jesus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
