Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address of the Representatives of the Religious Society of Friends: Commonly Called Quakers, in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, &C., To the Citizen of the United States At a Yearly Meeting of Friends held in Philadelphia, by adjournments from the 17th of the Fourth month, to 21st of the same, inclusive, 1837. The suffering condition of our fellow men, descendants of the African race, who are subjected to the rigours of unconditional slavery, having long engaged the sympathy and commiseration of this meeting, the subject was referred at our last annual assembly, to the serious attention of the Meeting for Sufferings. An address to the citizens of the United States, prepared by that meeting, was now introduced by the reading of their minutes, bringing into view the injustice of slavery, the enormities which it authorises by the traffic in the persons of men, extensively prosecuted within the United States, and the degradation of morals unavoidably attendant on such an unrighteous system, wherever it is tolerated; and inviting our fellow-citizens to a calm and dispassionate examination of this momentous subject, with a sincere desire to act in conformity with the principles of universal righteousness, in according to that people the enjoyment of their natural and religious rights; - as likewise the numerous and complicated injuries inflicted on the aborigines of our country, and the duty incumbent upon us of endeavouring to extend to the feeble remnant of these once numerous tribes, the benefits of civilized life and religious instruction: - which address being read and deliberately considered, was approved; and that meeting was directed to procure the printing of such number as they may judge needful for general distribution. Book The Doctrines of Friends

Download or read book The Doctrines of Friends written by Elisha Bates and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrines of Friends: Or, Principles of the Christian Religion, as Held by the Society of Friends, Commonly Called Quakers In publishing, at the present day, a treatise of the Doctrines of Friends, it is not intended to convey an idea, that the works of this kind, already extant, are not judiciously written. Nor is it intended, by the present performance, to supersede those valuable writings. On the contrary, I would recommend them to more general attention than they now receive. Nor is it to propagate or defend new principles, that I have entered into the present engagement: but to present, in a concise, and yet explicit manner, an account of the acknowledged doctrines of the Society. For though I consider the doctrinal works, that have been published, (with the consent of the Society, ) are all well adapted to the particular views of the respective writers, and to the times at which they were written; yet it may be noticed, that the writings of our primitive Friends are voluminous and scarce, while those of modern date do not notice many points of doctrine, which sometimes become interesting, from the particular course of religious inquiry. It has long been a settled sentiment in my mind, that a work, setting forth clearly the acknowledged principles of the Society, in all material points, without being tedious or expensive, would be useful both to the members of the Society itself, and to serious inquirers, of other religious denominations. With this sentiment, I cherished, for several years, a hope that some qualified individual would undertake the task. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Careful and Free Inquiry Into the True Nature and Tendency of the Religious Principles of the Society of Friends, Commonly Called Quakers: In Two Parts The materials of this volume were gleaned from various sources; and during that period in which the society of Friends struggled into existence. In that extraordinary period, when death had removed the head of that party which had been flung into power by the whirlwind of faction, the British nation replaced its native prince on the throne of his fathers. But Charles II. was an unprincipled man. He neither feared God, nor regarded man. He was a Jesuit in politics, a Judas in religion, a Nero on the throne. Irreclaimable even by the lessons which the nation had given his family, in the reigns of his father and grandfather; and deplorably and culpably ignorant of the duty and the art of ruling; and in a great degree a stranger to the character and disposition of that high-minded people, over whom he was placed as chief magistrate, he came to the throne with all the errors of a Stuart, if possible, tenfold increased. His reign, under the tutorship of Lauderdale, exhibited little else than misrule, and tyranny and cruelty. The kingdom he claimed as his inheritance by birthright. The treasure, and the bodies, and the consciences of the people he considered as his property; and as much at his disposal as his moveables, or the tenants of his stables. By the act of supremacy of A. D. 1669, procured by the most corrupt influence, he received power over all matters and persons, ecclesiastical and civil. He modelled the form of worship and government in the church according to his will. He denied to the people the right of electing their ministers, or of thinking for themselves, or of taking care of their own souls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Testimony of the Religious Society of Friends, Commonly Called Quakers: Respecting Some of Their Christian Doctrines and Practices The present is a period wherein we apprehend the enemy of souls is busily at work, endeavouring, with all the deceivableness of unrighteousness, to beguile the unwary, and to draw us away from a steadfast adherence to those doctrines and practices into which our primitive Friends were thus divinely led; in order, if possible, to frustrate the work of regeneration in individuals, and to hinder the spread of those princi ples and testimonies which, we believe, we were raised up as a people, to uphold and promulgate in the earth.
