Landing a tenure-track position is no easy task. Achieving tenure is even more difficult. Under what policies and practices do faculty find greater clarity about tenure and experience higher levels of job satisfaction? And what makes an institution a great place to work? In 2005–2006, the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education surveyed more than 15,000 tenure-track faculty at 200 participating institutions to assess their job satisfaction. The survey was designed around five key themes for faculty satisfaction: tenure clarity, work-life balance, support for research, collegiality, and leadership. Success on the Tenure Track positions the survey data in the context of actual colleges and universities and real faculty and administrators who talk about what works and why. Best practices at the highest-rated institutions in the survey—Auburn, Ohio State, North Carolina State, Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Iowa, Kansas, and North Carolina at Pembroke—give administrators practical, proven advice on how to increase their employee satisfaction. Additional chapters discuss faculty demographics, trends in employment practices, what leaders can do to create and sustain a great workplace for faculty, and what the future might hold for tenure. An actively engaged faculty is crucial for American higher education to retain its global competitiveness. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This research study investigated the perceptions and experiences of the socialization processes among early career foreign national tenure-accruing faculty in a Research I University, using the grounded research design. The findings revealed that the foreign national faculty appeared to shoulder the triad of tenure track responsibilities i.e., teaching, research, and service amidst unclear and unspoken expectations. However, coming from different cultural back grounds, including collectivist cultures at times foreign national faculty needed more personalized attention than is usually offered in the individualistic culture of the U.S. While they focused on their accomplishments, some of the faculty members paid little attention to the sociocultural requirements of their spouses, and developed relationship concerns. Unspoken and vague expectations about research further complicated faculty work and impeded the adjustment process. Very little research presently exists in this area. Although this study fills that gap in literature, a more concerted and focused socialization process, with clearer departmental expectations, and thoughtful institutional support is likely to ensure that multicultural faculty experience more productive, and caring office and home environments.

Book excerpt: This book examines perspectives of fulltime faculty at the School of Education in a major public research university in the United States on their socialization experiences to research. Faculty completed a survey providing insights on their perceptions regarding their research-related experiences during their graduate, early-career, and current stages. Faculty were also asked to provide their perceptions on the institution's efforts towards their research socialization in addition to other descriptive data. Correlations between several types of research activities among faculty member's different career stages were significant. Perceptions concerning socialization to the faculty position were more positive regarding the contribution of faculty members' graduate experiences compared to the institutional efforts. Finally, perceptions regarding the available socialization programs at the institution were positive in general, and were also highly correlated with faculty members' perception about their overall experiences with the institution.

Colleges and universities increasingly depend on conditional, non-tenure track adjuncts who frequently lack resources, development and training (Smith, 2015, p. 236). Two-thirds of all college and university instructors in the United States are non-tenured or off-tenure track faculty, commonly referred to as contingent faculty (Gappa, 2000; Leslie & Gappa, 2002; Kezar & Sam, 2013). This increase corresponds with a decrease in full-time faculty positions at some higher education institutions. The 2006 American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Contingent Faculty Index reported that between 1995 to 2003, full-time, tenured faculty positions declined by more than 2000 (AAUP 2006). Although there is literature about adjunct populations (Lorenzetti, 2016) and adjunct onboarding (Shattuck, Dubins, & Zilberman, 2011), the experiences community college part-time and full-time faculty have as they teach on the same campus has been mostly ignored. Community colleges tend to use a large number of adjunct faculty with professional (as opposed to traditionally academic) backgrounds to train skilled, vocational workers for the professional environment (Milliron & Wilson, 2004). It is vital to include research on how faculty interact with one another, and how these interactions affect perceived individual roles on campus.
