Book New Polarizations and Old Contradictions The Crisis of Centrism

Download or read book New Polarizations and Old Contradictions The Crisis of Centrism written by Greg Albo and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takes the buzzword "polarization" as its point of departure to describe the vast, and ever-growing economic inequality worldwide "Polarization" is a word commonly used by everyone from mainstream journalists to the person in the street, whatever their political stripe. But this widely recognized phenomenon deserves scrutiny. The 58th volume of the Socialist Register takes up the challenge, asking such questions as: Are the current tendencies towards polarization new, and if so, what is their significance? What underlying contradictions—between race, class, income, gender, and geopolitics—do the latest polarization trends expose? And to what extent can "centrist" politics continue to hold and contain these internal contradictions? This volume's original essays examine the escalating polarization of national, racial, generational, and other identities, all in the context of growing economic inequality, new forms of regional and urban antagonism, "vaccine nationalism," and the shifting parameters of rivalry between the "Great Powers."

Book The Politics of the Right

Download or read book The Politics of the Right written by Leo Panitch and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the Left faces new challenges from political forces amassing on the radical right. The 52nd volume of the Socialist Register presents a serious calibration and a careful political mapping of these forces. It addresses pivotal questions on the reordering of the new right. These essays - very broad in terms of themes and places - speak to the global challenges the new right poses for the left at this historical moment. * What is the nature of the right's populism, nationalism and militarism? * What is the social base and organizational strength and range of far right political forces? * To what extent are they influencing mainstream parties and opinion? * How have they penetrated state institutions?* What role do state security services and police forces play?* Does our political situation today require comparison with 1930s Fascism? * How should the left respond to defend democratic and human rights?

Book The Socialist Register 1993

Download or read book The Socialist Register 1993 written by Ralph Miliband and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the recent collapse of so much that formed socialist expectations in the twentieth century, and yet at the same time with a global capitalist order which is full of severe, massive and urgent problems, we live in a period of great political confusion. In such a period it is inevitable that nostrums are advanced both on the Right and on the Left which are incapable of tackling seriously the problems they are supposed to resolve. We conceived this volume as addressing a broad range of 'dead-end' or 'morbid symptom' responses to various aspects of the current global disorder, offering analyses of why they arise as well as a critique and corrective to them. We deliberately cast our net widely: the essays in this volume highlight important aspects of our theme in relation to environmentalism, feminism, social democracy and revolutionary socialism; and they also address real problems and false solutions as they pertain to postmodernism, nationalism, constitutionalism and immigration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays that explore new ways of living with technological change Every year since 1964, the Socialist Register has offered a fascinating survey of movements and ideas from the independent new left. This year's edition asks readers to explore just how we need to live with new technologies. Essays in this 57th Socialist Register reveal the contradictions and dislocations of technological change in the twenty-first century. And they explore alternative ways of living: from artificial intelligence (AI) to the arts, from transportation to fashion, from environmental science to economic planning. Greg Albo - Post-capitalism: Alternatives or detours? Book The Crisis and the Left

Download or read book The Crisis and the Left written by Vivek Chibber and published by Leftword. This book was released on 2012 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economic crisis that closed the first decade of the 21st century has demonstrated that the contradictions of capitalism cannot be overcome. The challenge for socialist analysis is to reveal both the nature of these contradictions in the neo-liberal era of globalized finance, and their consequences in our time. Crises need to be understood as turning points that open up opportunities. How to facilitate this is the sharpest challenge posed to socialists by the most severe global economic crisis since the 1930s. This volume, a companion to The Crisis This Time: Socialist Register 2011, examines the response of the international Left and asks, how has the Left responded and can it offer an alternative to faltering capitalism?

Book The World Turned Upside Down

Download or read book The World Turned Upside Down written by Greg Albo and published by Monthly Review Press. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A World Turned Upside Down? poses two overarching questions for the new period opened by the Trump election and the continued growth of right-wing nationalisms. Is there an unwinding of neoliberal globalization taking place, or will globalization continue to deepen, but still deny the free cross-border movement of labor? Would such an unwinding entail an overall shift in power and accumulation to specific regions of the Global South that might overturn the current world order and foster the disintegration of the varied regional blocs that have formed? These questions are addressed through a series of essays that carefully map the national, class, racial, and gender dimensions of the state, capitalism, and progressive forces today. Sober assessment is crucial for the left to gain its political bearings in this trying period and the uncertainties that lie ahead.

Book excerpt: The fiftieth volume of the Socialist Register is dedicated to the theme of registering class, in light of the spread and deepening of capitalist social relations around the globe. Today s economic crisis has been deployed to extend the class struggle from above while many resistances have been explicitly cast in terms of class struggles from below. This volume addresses how capitalist classes are reorganizing and the structure and composition of working classes in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Essays which aim to create a world of agency and justice How can we build a future with better health and homes, respecting people and the environment? The 2020 edition of the Socialist Register, Beyond Market Dystopia, contains a wealth of incisive essays that entice readers to do just that: to wake up to the cynical, implicitly market-driven concept of human society we have come to accept as everyday reality. Intellectuals and activists such as Michelle Chin, Nancy Fraser, Arun Gupta, and Jeremy Brecher connect with and go beyond classical socialist themes, to combine an analysis of how we are living now with visions and plans for new strategic, programmatic, manifesto-oriented alternative ways of living.

Book Parliamentary Socialism

Download or read book Parliamentary Socialism written by Ralph Miliband and published by . This book was released on 2005-08-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of political parties claiming socialism to be their aim, the Labour Party has always been one of the most dogmatic-not about socialism, but about the parliamentary system. This is not simply to say that the Labour Party has never been a party of revolution: such parties have normally been quite willing to use the opportunities the parliamentary system offered as one means of furthering their aims. It is rather that the leaders of the Labour Party have always rejected any kind of political action which fell, or which appeared to them to fall, outside the framework and conventions of the parliamentary system. The Labour Party has been a party deeply imbued by parliamentarism. And in this respect, there is no distinction to be made between Labour's political and its industrial leaders. Both have been equally determined that the Labour Party should not stray from the narrow path of parliamentary politics. The Labour Party remains, in practice, what it has always been-a party of modest social reform in a capital-ist system within whose confines it is ever more firmly and by now irrevocably rooted.
