Download or read book Social Security and Medicare Answer Book written by David A. Pratt and published by Aspen Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 990 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Security and Medicare Answer Book, Ninth Edition, is a comprehensive and accessible resource for attorneys, accountants, estate planners, financial planners, insurance agents, and others who counsel either older Americans or their younger counterparts who are planning for future retirement. It is also an excellent resource for individuals who want to achieve a better understanding of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid and how these exceptionally important programs affect them, now or in the future. An understanding of Social Security and Medicare benefits is an essential component of any retirement planning exercise. An informed estimate of the benefits that will be available under these public programs is a prerequisite to any determination of how much income will be required from private retirement programs and personal savings. The recent financial crises and the COVID-19 pandemic have underscored the importance of careful planning for retirement, and the need to understand Social Security and Medicare benefits. Social Security and Medicare Answer Book addresses the key questions that arise under Social Security and Medicare and covers all developments, including the extensive Medicare and Medicaid changes under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and subsequent statutory and regulatory developments. The book also includes a description of the most important features of Medicaid and discusses how Medicare and Medicaid benefits are coordinated. At the time of this writing (August 2020), there are no pending bills to "repeal and replace" the ACA, but further attempts to roll back its major provisions can be expected, and the Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments on the constitutionality of the entire ACA after the November elections. Regulatory actions taken by the Trump administration have significantly affected both Medicare and Medicaid, and the outcome of the elections will have a profound effect on the future of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. The Ninth Edition of Social Security and Medicare Answer Book brings you up to date on the latest developments, including: Social Security tax rates for employers and employees Updates on the different types of benefits available under Social Security, the methods for calculating each type of benefit and circumstances in which benefits may be lost Updated maximum retirement benefit at full retirement age (FRA) (see Q 5:20) and updated earnings exemption amounts for Social Security recipients below FRA Effect of underreporting self-employment income on Social Security benefits - Description of a recent law (H.R. 4547) intended to strengthen oversight of the Representative Payee Program for beneficiaries who are incapable of managing their Social Security of Supplemental Security Income payments A detailed explanation of the administrative and judicial review processes under Social Security and Medicare, including efforts to reduce backlogs in the appeals process Updated Medicare Part B costs Updated coverage of the eligibility requirements for, and benefits provided under, the four parts of Medicare Coverage of Medicare Secondary Payer reporting, now required for prescription drug coverage Discussion of likely changes to home health care, based on a Proposed Rule [CMS-1730-P] Telehealth coverage under Medicare Part B Discussion of recent regulations and rulings from the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as well as a discussion of recent case law (throughout the 2021 Supplement). Book Improving the Social Security Representative Payee Program

Download or read book Improving the Social Security Representative Payee Program written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 7 million recipients of Social Security benefits have a representative payee-a person or an organization-to receive or manage their benefits. These payees manage Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance funds for retirees, surviving spouses, children, and the disabled, and they manage Supplemental Security Income payments to disabled, blind, or elderly people with limited income and resources. More than half of the beneficiaries with a representative payee are minor children; the rest are adults, often elderly, whose mental or physical incapacity prevents them from acting on their own behalf, and people who have been deemed incapable under state guardianship laws. The funds are managed through the Representative Payee Program of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The funds total almost $4 billion a month, and there are more than 5.3 million representative payees. In 2004 Congress required the commissioner of the SSA to conduct a one-time survey to determine how payments to individual and organizational representative payees are being managed and used on behalf of the beneficiaries.1 To carry out this work, the SSA requested a study by the National Academies, which appointed the Committee on Social Security Representative Payees. This report is the result of that study. Improving the Social Security Representative Payee Program: Serving Beneficiaries and Minimizing Misuse (1) assesses the extent to which representative payees are not performing their duties in accordance with SSA standards for representative payee conduct, (2) explains whether the representative payment policies are practical and appropriate, (3) identifies the types of representative payees that have the highest risk of misuse of benefits, and (4) finds ways to reduce the risk of misuse of benefits and ways to better protect beneficiaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the secrets to maximizing your Social Security benefits and earn up to thousands of dollars more each year with expert advice that you can't get anywhere else. Want to know how to navigate the forbidding maze of Social Security and emerge with the highest possible benefits? You could try reading all 2,728 rules of the Social Security system (and the thousands of explanations of these rules), but Kotlikoff, Moeller, and Solman explain Social Security benefits in an easy to understand and user-friendly style. What you don't know can seriously hurt you: wrong decisions about which Social Security benefits to apply for cost some individual retirees tens of thousands of dollars in lost income every year. How many retirees or those nearing retirement know about such Social Security options as file and suspend (apply for benefits and then don't take them)? Or start stop start (start benefits, stop them, then re-start them)? Or-just as important-when and how to use these techniques? Get What's Yours covers the most frequent benefit scenarios faced by married retired couples, by divorced retirees, by widows and widowers, among others. It explains what to do if you're a retired parent of dependent children, disabled, or an eligible beneficiary who continues to work, and how to plan wisely before retirement. It addresses the tax consequences of your choices, as well as the financial implications for other investments. Many personal finance books briefly address Social Security, but none offers the thorough, authoritative, yet conversational analysis found here. You've paid all your working life for these benefits. Now, get what's yours.
