Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic funds transfer (EFT) systems include a wide range of computer-based payment systems and sources that substitute electronic and digital transfers for movements of cash and paper checks. A few years ago some people were predict ing that EFT would replace paper money and coins entirely and that we would soon be a "checkless" and' 'cashless" society. Such sweeping changes have not occurred, but a slower evolution is clearly underway. Although checks, cur rency, and coin are likely to be here for many years to come, EFT is becoming an established part of our worldwide payment transfer system, and the implications and consequences of this technology are real. They include: • Alterations in personal finance and in the process of purchasing and paying for consumer goods and services. • Changes in the structure of financial and retail organizations and their mode of interaction in the marketplace. • Modifications in the flow of funds in our society and in the interactions among economic institutions. • Alterations in the prospects for invasion of personal privacy, perpetration of fraud and theft, and violation of antitrust regulations. • Changes in the regulatory and competitive balance among the numerous financial institutions in the United States. Such alterations foretell important impacts on people and society. Benefits are forthcoming, but the costs will also be real.

Book Impact of Mobile Payment Applications and Transfers on Business

Download or read book Impact of Mobile Payment Applications and Transfers on Business written by Opati, Thaisaiyi Zephania and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumers continue to rely heavily on their phones to complete such tasks as transferring funds between banks or accounts, depositing or withdrawing funds, paying bills, and purchasing items. Mobile money users are oftentimes more financially resilient and can protect themselves better against economic and other shocks. Moreover, mobile money can increase the velocity of money in circulation because it reduces the transactions and time costs of making retail payments. As such, understanding the impact of mobile payments is imperative for businesses and the economy. Impact of Mobile Payment Applications and Transfers on Business is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on mobile money transfer and its impact in social, corporate, and micro- and macro-policies concerning the aggregate economy and individual households as a whole within an economy. It covers the impact, innovations, business-to-business transformations, regulatory framework, challenges, and ethical issues surrounding mobile money transfers around the world. This book is ideally designed for economists, financial analysts, business managers, leaders, scholars, practitioners, researchers, and students in fields that include management, finance, economics, commerce, and leadership.

Book Savings for the Poor

Download or read book Savings for the Poor written by Michael A. Stegman and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning this year, federal payment recipients will receive their government benefits through electronic funds transfer (EFT)-- what most of us call direct deposit. Although cost-cutting is the driving force behind the move to a virtually all-electronic federal payment system, Michael Stegman believes the initiative has a far broader potential: to bring poor Americans into the banking mainstream. In this book Stegman outlines how many families will enter the mainstream banking system through EFT '99, as the program is called. He explains in careful detail the thinking behind the shift to EFT and the implementation of the program this year. He also argues that, for maximum success, EFT '99 should be combined with a program of national Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), dedicated savings accounts for low-income people that can be used for purchasing a first home, acquiring more education or job training, or starting a small-business. Essentially, EFT '99 will bring people into the banking system, and IDAs will give them an incentive to use the system to its fullest in order to make their money work for them and their children. There are other steps that the government can take to boost EFT's ability to help public aid recipients achieve self-sufficiency. It can: add a direct deposit option to state benefits payments programs; give banks significant additional Community Reinvestment Act Credit for establishing accounts for EFT recipients; and regulate fees for cashing government benefits and voluntary accounts so that people are not charged excessively for accessing their money. This book demonstrates that — with careful planning and a relatively small investment — the government's EFT initiative can have a major payoff in real assets and improved prospects for those who have been, for far too long, on the fringes of the country's mainstream banking system.
