Book The Social and Spatial Behaviour of Caribou Rangifer Tarandus

Download or read book The Social and Spatial Behaviour of Caribou Rangifer Tarandus written by Quinn Marshall Richard Webber and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All animals are social at some point in their life. The causes and consequences of animal social behaviour are widely studied, but the integration of space use and spatial features of the landscape within our understanding of social behaviour is not widely studied. My thesis broadly addresses the role of spatial features of the landscape and individual-level space use traits as potential drivers of emergent social behaviour in caribou (Rangifer tarandus). First, I present a theoretical framework linking social and spatial behaviour within the context of evolutionary and behavioural ecology theory. Next, I assess the relationship between social behaviour and space use across scales, from fine-scale foraging and interactions to coarse-scale examination of how individuals and groups vary social behaviour through space and time. Overall, I found that caribou social behaviour is linked to space use and spatial behaviour in four important ways. First, I found that collective movement was an important predictor for patterns of habitat selection, where caribou tend to select foraging habitat (i.e. lichen) while alone, but to move collectively between foraging patches. Second, despite high home range overlap between caribou, and thus potential to associate, sub-groups of individuals had strong social preference for one another and formed distinct social communities. Third, based on a thirty year dataset of caribou group size, I found that group sizes varied spatially and temporally. In contrast to our expectation, groups decreased in size as a function of increasing population density, while groups tended to be larger in winter compared to summer, presumably as a result of seasonal access to foraging opportunities. Finally, I found that social network strength and habitat specialization were density-dependent, while more social individuals were habitat generalists. However, habitat specialization had a greater effect on fitness, where habitat specialists had higher fitness than habitat generalists, but only at high density. My thesis addresses questions about the relationship between social and spatial behaviour and provides a theoretical framework for future studies to address similar questions. Throughout my thesis I also argue for the integration of various diverse ecological fields, including socioecology, spatial ecology, movement ecology, and conservation biology.

Book The Spatial Structure of Habitat Selection by Caribou Rangifer Tarandus Caribou in Newfoundland New Multi scaled Approaches with Applications to Limiting Factors

Download or read book The Spatial Structure of Habitat Selection by Caribou Rangifer Tarandus Caribou in Newfoundland New Multi scaled Approaches with Applications to Limiting Factors written by Stephen J. Mayor and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitat selection is a multi-scaled phenomenon. Selection depends on the scales perceived by organisms, while our ability to detect selection depends on analytical scale. Traditional studies of habitat selection have been limited by the use of discrete, arbitrary scales, because a quantitative basis has not existed for evaluating how animals perceive the availability of habitat. I developed new approaches based on common geostatistical and spatial analyses that use continua to represent multi-scaled winter habitat selection by caribou (Rangifer tarandus) from the perspective of the organisms, letting their responses define the scales of analysis. Caribou responded most strongly at the feeding area level, at distances up to 13 km, and at scales of patchiness of about 1 ha. Although habitat selection among levels of behaviour was hierarchical, caribou selected habitat variables across overlapping scale domains, suggesting that limiting factors were not hierarchically constrained. My results implicate habitat heterogeneity as an underlying cause of multiscaled habitat selection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific study of networks - computer, social, and biological - has received an enormous amount of interest in recent years. However, the network approach has been applied to the field of animal behaviour relatively late compared to many other biological disciplines. Understanding social network structure is of great importance for biologists since the structural characteristics of any network will affect its constituent members and influence a range of diverse behaviours. These include finding and choosing a sexual partner, developing and maintaining cooperative relationships, and engaging in foraging and anti-predator behavior. This novel text provides an overview of the insights that network analysis has provided into major biological processes, and how it has enhanced our understanding of the social organisation of several important taxonomic groups. It brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines with the aim of providing both an overview of the power of the network approach for understanding patterns and process in animal populations, as well as outlining how current methodological constraints and challenges can be overcome. Animal Social Networks is principally aimed at graduate level students and researchers in the fields of ecology, zoology, animal behaviour, and evolutionary biology but will also be of interest to social scientists.

Book Assessing the Impacts of Heli skiing on the Behaviour and Spatial Distribution of Mountain Cariboo Rangifer Tarandus Caribou

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) are listed as endangered in Canada, with isolated subherds only remaining in British Columbia and parts of northern Idaho. A loss of old-growth forest habitat has caused a decline in their range, making them more likely to be disturbed by backcountry recreational activities such as heli-skiing. This study investigated whether an interaction between heli-skiing and Mountain Caribou could be detected. The detectability of caribou from helicopters indicated that caribou are often not detected when within close proximity to active skiing. Data on the behavioural responses of caribou that were recorded by Mike Wiegele heli-skiing personnel between 1996 and 2010 were analysed. The relationship between the type of responses and the frequency of ski run usage was examined. Responses were not higher in areas subject to more frequent skiing, but overt behavioural responses to heliskiing were documented. Three GIS analyses were performed on GPS data from 25 caribou collared between 1996 and 2007 to determine any spatial effects of skiing activity on how animals use their range. The first test examined habitat use near ski runs. Actual numbers of GPS locations within suitable habitat near ski runs were more than expected. The second test determined the distance established by caribou between themselves and ski runs with different intensities of use. More than an expected number of locations were found close to frequently skied runs; while fewer than expected locations were found close to runs not skied. The third test compared caribou's rate of movement within zones skied frequently and less often. There was no significant difference in the degree of movement in areas skied heavily or not. Results of these analyses suggest that caribou in the area were not directly displaced by heli-skiing activities during the years studied, but avoidance at finer scales than I measured is possible. It appears as if 'Best Management Practices' that enforce closing areas to skiing upon detection of caribou may be helpful in reducing conflicts with caribou; however, mountain caribou in this study area have likely habituated to more than 40 years of skiing. Continued avoidance management, more specific research on short-term reactions to heliskiing and with herds in other areas are suggested to ensure a coexistence of caribou and heli-skiing.

Book Spatial Factors Influencing Northern Mountain Caribou Rangifer Tarandus Survival and Distribution in the Telkwa Range

Download or read book Spatial Factors Influencing Northern Mountain Caribou Rangifer Tarandus Survival and Distribution in the Telkwa Range written by Laura Vivian Grant and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human-induced habitat alteration has led to the decline of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) populations across Canada. The many challenges in conserving caribou are exemplified by a herd of northern mountain caribou in the Telkwa Range of central British Columbia. Despite population augmentation in the 1990s, this herd has declined to 18 individuals, yet mechanisms driving this decline are largely unknown. I used location data from caribou collared between 1991-2015 to investigate the influence of human disturbances - including forestry, roads, and recreation - on survival (N = 224) and habitat selection (N = 76). Results suggested that the decline of this herd was largely driven by a shift in predator prey dynamics following forest harvest. Further exacerbating the decline were the cumulative effects of disturbance in the Telkwa Range. Roads, recreation, and forestry influenced the distribution of the Telkwa caribou herd, ultimately affecting habitat availability and the ability of caribou to successfully manage predation risk.

Book Animals Health and Society

Download or read book Animals Health and Society written by Craig Stephen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHOICE Recommended title 2022 This timely book reframes the historic narrative of people, animals, and nature as risks to each other, to one where we think about health as a shared capacity. This new narrative promotes the positive contributions made to health across species and generations and addresses growing calls to shift from a reactive to proactive approach in One Health. Editor Craig Stephen takes the reader on a tour of the situations wherein we can all, regardless of our job description, work across species, sectors, and generations to motivate action. Perspectives and methods from a variety of fields and experts are shared and adapted to promote collaborative understanding of and action on determinants of health at the animal-society interface. Case studies demonstrate that the principles and practices presented are feasible, empowering people to make choices that concurrently benefit the health of animals, societies, and ecosystems. The first book to adapt and explain health promotion, harm reduction, and health equity issues in a One Health context, and in terms of animal health, this is necessary reading for students of and practitioners working in planetary health, conservation, ecohealth, public health, health promotion, veterinary medicine, and animal welfare.
