Book excerpt: Born from the mists of Irish legend, Bram Stoker’s ‘The Snake’s Pass’ traces a romance fraught with mystery and peril. Arthur Severn is holidaying in the town of Carnacliff, Ireland, when he meets a peasant girl in the fog and falls in love. But their social standing is not the only thing keeping them apart. The town’s money lender, Black Murdock wants to take control of the land where Arthur has been staying and seems obsessed with finding a hidden treasure lost beneath the bog. As legends resurface of the Snake King’s lost crown, the shifting swamp threatens to swallow the house itself and destroy Arthur’s hopes of finding the girl again. Drawing on the legend of St Patrick, Stoker’s thrilling romance creates a brooding world of danger and mystery. His only work set entirely in Ireland, ‘The Snake’s Pass’ is an unmissable classic and rightful precursor to the Gothic horror that is Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’. Bram Stoker (1847 - 1912) was an Irish author celebrated for his contributions to the Victorian Gothic period. Among his works, 'The Primrose Path', 'The Snake's Pass', and 'The Lair of the White Worm', 'Dracula' is best-known as the masterpiece of Gothic Horror that introduced vampires to English shores. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Stoker later moved to London to work alongside Henry Irving at the Lyceum Theatre, where he followed his interests in the arts, science, and the occult.

Download or read book The Snake 1 written by Marthus-Adden Zimboiant and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People think there is nothing about snake to study to relate to human life. I myself didnt know one could study snake to relate to everyday life. Why should we study such a disabled animal to become able men of high repute? As matter of fact, Evang. Zimboiant has let us know that snake is Satan himself, and so one must be very shrewd as Satan before he or she will be able to detect the devices of Satan in this world. In this book, Evang. Zimboiant uses cobra and emerald boa to digest his two types of isolationnegative isolation and positive isolation. He also uses cobra to elaborate on what he calls elements of focus and barriers to focus. How he uses the way anaconda catches his prey to relate to the shrewdness of the devil is very inspiring and interesting to read even the rest of the text. As a matter of fact, you will understand why Satan came to steal, kill and destroy. Satan tries to hide the actual truth about our God, twists Scriptures to fit his purposes and offers counterfeit promises he cant fulfil. He always seeks an opportune time to tempt us. However, Evang. Zimboiant has perfectly revealed the craftiness of Satan, which will let you understand why Apostle Peter said: Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8), and to which Apostle Paul also added Do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place [lest you give a foothold] to the devil. (Ephesians 4:26-27) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone can look at a snake and see a creature unique unto itself, a reptile with a set of zoological and biological traits that are entirely its own. Just looking at this distinct animal raises many scientific questions. With regard to evolution, how did such an animal come to be? How does a snake move, and how do its sense organs differ from that of other reptiles? How does it eat, and how does it reproduce? Essentially, how does a snake "work"? In How Snakes Work: The Structure, Function and Behavior of the World's Snakes, leading zoologist Harvey B. Lillywhite has written the definitive scientific guide to the functional biology of snakes. Written for both herpetologists and a more general audience with an interest in the field, How Snakes Work features nearly two hundred color images of various species of snakes, used to provide visual examples of biological features explained in the text. Chapter topics include the evolutionary history of the snake, feeding, locomotion, the structure and function of skin, circulation and respiration, sense organs, sound production, temperature and thermoregulation, and reproduction. Containing all the latest research and advances in our biological knowledge of the snake, How Snakes Work is an indispensable asset to professional zoologists and enthusiasts alike.
