Gone are the days of quitting by willpower alone! Using the latest findings in addiction research, Jopp explains the thought patterns that keep millions from trying to quit—and details the most successful strategies for quitting. Divided into 30 chapters (which can be read one per day leading up to quitting day, or at the reader’s own pace), the book presents an appealing mix of evidence-based research and insight and guidance informed by Jopp’s experiences as both an ex-smoker and a health coach who has already helped many thousands of smokers to stop smoking. Jopp never loses sight of what is most important for smokers to understand: exactly how nicotine induces both physical and psychological dependence—and by knowing all this, how to break free. The book is fully integrated with a 30-day online program (free for the first ten days to those who have bought the book) where readers can set goals, train to resist smoking triggers, and receive daily nutrition tips. Book The Price of Smoking

Download or read book The Price of Smoking written by Frank A. Sloan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does a pack of cigarettes cost a smoker, the smoker's family, and society? This longitudinal study on the private and social costs of smoking calculates that the cost of smoking to a 24-year-old woman smoker is $86,000 over a lifetime; for a 24-year-old male smoker the cost is $183,000. The total social cost of smoking over a lifetime—including both private costs to the smoker and costs imposed on others (including second-hand smoke and costs of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security)—comes to $106,000 for a woman and $220,000 for a man. The cost per pack over a lifetime of smoking: almost $40.00. The first study to quantify the cost of smoking in this way, or in such depth, this accessible book not only adds a weapon to the arsenal of antismoking messages but also provides a framework for assessment that can be applied to other health behaviors. The findings on the effects of smoking on Medicare and Medicaid will be surprising and perhaps controversial, for the authors estimate the costs to be much lower than the damage awards being paid to 46 states as a result of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement.

Book Stop Smoking for Good

Download or read book Stop Smoking for Good written by Balasa Prasad and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do most people who try to quit smoking fail-even with the help of the nicotine patch, gum, medications, hypnotism, or other state-of-the-art aids? In his radical approach to conquering the smoking habit, Dr. Balasa Prasad states that these crutches are ineffective because they futilely focus on nicotine addiction instead of the underlying psychological triggers that enslave smokers to their habits. His inspirational and practical program gives readers a confidence in their inner strength, helps them identify their addictive profile with the use of questionnaires, and provides a powerful three-step plan that will help them kick the habit once and for all.

Book Health Economics second edition

Download or read book Health Economics second edition written by Frank A. Sloan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of a textbook that combines economic concepts with empirical evidence, updated with material on the Affordable Care Act and other developments. This book introduces students to the growing research field of health economics. Rather than offer details about health systems without providing a theoretical context, Health Economics combines economic concepts with empirical evidence to enhance readers' economic understanding of how health care institutions and markets function. The theoretical and empirical approaches draw heavily on the general field of applied microeconomics, but the text moves from the individual and firm level to the market level to a macroeconomic view of the role of health and health care within the economy as a whole. The book takes a global perspective, with description and analysis of institutional features of health sectors in countries around the world. This second edition has been updated to include material on the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, material on the expansion of health insurance in Massachusetts, and an evaluation of Oregon's Medicaid expansion via lottery. The discussion of health care and health insurance in China has been substantially revised to reflect widespread changes there. Tables and figures have been updated with newly available data. Also new to this edition is a discussion of the health economics literature published between 2010 and 2015. The text includes readings, extensive references, review and discussion questions, and exercises. A student solutions manual offers solutions to selected exercises. Downloadable supplementary material is available for instructors.

Book excerpt: "A fiercely honest and beautifully written book." —Paul Austin, author, Beautiful Eyes and Something for the PainA cautionary tale of careless psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, and resilienceSawyer's memoir is a harrowing, heroic, and redeeming story of her battle with mental illness, and her triumph in overcoming it. In 1960, as a suicidal teenager, Sawyer was institutionalized, misdiagnosed, and suffered through 89 electroshock treatments before being transferred, labeled as "unimproved." The damage done has haunted her life. Discharged in 1966, after finally receiving proper psychiatric care, Sawyer kept her past secret and moved on to graduate from Yale University, raise two children, and become a respected psychotherapist. That is, until 2001, when she reviewed her hospital records and began to remember a broken childhood and the even more broken mental health system of the 1950s and 1960s.

Book Solving the Puzzle How I Stopped Smoking So Easily

Download or read book Solving the Puzzle How I Stopped Smoking So Easily written by Goran Masevski and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-11 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear readers, this book was written in one breath. I tried openly, honestly and spontaneously to unravel the puzzle - how I stopped smoking so easily.I would like to point out that I have not read a single book about quitting smoking, nor have I used any aiders to help me quit; I have not had health issues that would make me quit, nor have I experienced any fear of the risk that smoking carries with itself. I just quit, stopped, gave up, said to myself "Enough is enough". Can you imagine your own misery, when, apart from the fact that you are lying to yourself, you are also trying to convince the others that you aren't smoking because you are an addict but a hedonist who enjoys life. Drunkards, gamblers and other addicts have similar excuses. Can you imagine what it's like when someone says to you "when I inhale the cigarette smoke I can concentrate better, which helps me in my work - I react more swiftly, I get around better".Alleluia! You are a lucky fellow! A friend of an angel! If only I had that privilege, that gift, that elevated condition. I wish I were one of the chosen for whom inhaling carbon monoxide does a world of good to the brain cells. If I were you I'd start thinking about founding a school and establishing a discipline with one sole purpose in mind, recognizing the benefits of this common ritual. What nonsense! Absolute absurdity! Rubbish!Don't forget that the feeling of calmness that comes with lighting a cigarette is a mere illusion. Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated - ConfuciusIt is my sincere hope that this book will help many cigarette addicts to quit, and incite thoughts in many of the readers about this addiction.
