The mountains are calling in Ashland, Oregon, where pastry chef turned amateur sleuth, Jules Capshaw, is baking up a bevy of spiced curry buns and chai cookies for a moonlit snowshoe tour. Ramiro’s family is visiting from Spain and Jules can’t wait to take them up to her beloved Mount A with its charming and rustic lodge, backcountry trails, and star-filled skies that stretch for miles. Their winter wonderland adventure is nothing short of magical and the merry party opts to return to the slope the next day for the Downhill Dummy. The annual competition is a favorite amongst snow lovers. Contestants strap makeshift dummies to skis and send them hurling down a death-defying ski jump in hopes of catching big air. The team at Torte is in the mix this year with their own replica of a tiered cake and a baker who closely resembles their fearless leader. It’s a fun and festive atmosphere as dummies sail past the crowd to huge cheers and applause. Until one of the dummies takes a deadly detour and lands atop Fitz Baskin. Fitz is a guide on the mountain and his icy dealings have made for frosty relationships with everyone he encounters. Suddenly there are more suspects than snowdrifts as Jules dives into the investigation. She unearths a web of secrets and motives that threaten to shake the rustic mountain lodge to its core. Can she catch the killer before they strike again, or will the truth be buried forever under fluffy layers of fresh snow?

Book excerpt: Little Miss Sunshine meets Room in this quirky, heartwarming story of friendship, loyalty and discovery. It's Newfoundland, 1986. Fourteen-year-old Bun O'Keefe has lived a solitary life in an unsafe, unsanitary house. Her mother is a compulsive hoarder, and Bun has had little contact with the outside world. What she's learned about life comes from the random books and old VHS tapes that she finds in the boxes and bags her mother brings home. Bun and her mother rarely talk, so when Bun's mother tells Bun to leave one day, she does. Hitchhiking out of town, Bun ends up on the streets of St. John's, Newfoundland. Fortunately, the first person she meets is Busker Boy, a street musician who senses her naivety and takes her in. Together they live in a house with an eclectic cast of characters: Chef, a hotel dishwasher with culinary dreams; Cher, a drag queen with a tragic past; Big Eyes, a Catholic school girl desperately trying to reinvent herself; and The Landlord, a man who Bun is told to avoid at all cost. Through her experiences with her new roommates, and their sometimes tragic revelations, Bun learns that the world extends beyond the walls of her mother's house and discovers the joy of being part of a new family -- a family of friends who care.

Download or read book Stories of American Life and Adventure written by Edward Eggleston and published by IndyPublish.com. This book was released on 1895 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1895. American novelist and historian, Eggleston's novels depicting early life in southern Indiana have been widely read. The design of this volume is laid out in the Preface: This book is intended to serve three main purposes. One of these is to make school reading pleasant by supplying matter simple and direct in style, and sufficiently interesting and exciting to hold the reader's attention in a state of constant wakefulness; that is, to keep the mind in the condition in which instruction can be received with the greatest advantage. A second object is to cultivate an interest in narratives of fact by selecting chiefly incidents full of action, such as are attractive to the minds of boys and girls whose pulses are yet quick with youthful life. The early establishment of a preference for stories of this sort is the most effective antidote to the prevalent vice of reading inferior fiction for mere stimulation. But the principal aim of this book is to make the reader acquainted with American life and manners in other times. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
Download or read book The Smoking Diaries Volume 2 written by Simon Gray and published by Granta Books. This book was released on 2013-01-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a baby, Simon Gray discovered that he could move his pram while still nestling inside it. 'It was a complete mystery to the adult intelligences, how had he done it, if it was he who had done it, but if not he, who then and why? So the next afternoon they (Mummy and Nanny) planted the pram in the usual spot, and stood over it, watching - the baby lay there smiling or snivelling up at them, until it struck them that they should try observing the baby when unobserved by the baby, and they withdrew behind bushes and trees etc.; and thus witnessed the swaying of the pram, then the juddering of the pram, then its slow, unsteady progress along the path, the movement accompanied by a low humming and keening sound from within that reminded them more of a dog than a human ... "jouncing" was the word they used for it. I was a jouncer therefore.' In the second book of his chronicles of triumph and disaster which started with The Smoking Diaries, Gray intertwined scenes from his adult and his childish self to produce a brilliant and moving counterpoint of life's unsteady progress.

Download or read book The Underlying Mechanisms and Novel Approaches for Diabetes and its Related Complications written by Qi Pan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, which severely affects the quality of life and survival of patients. The latest data from the International Diabetes Federation showed that there are approximately 537 million diabetic patients globally in 2021, and it is expected to reach 783 million by 2045. The treatment regime of diabetic patients mainly refers to the management of blood glucose and its complications. At present, typical hypoglycemic medications include insulin and non-insulin hypoglycemic drugs, which can be subdivided into a-glucosidase inhibitors, metformin, thiazolidinediones, sulfonylureas, glinides, DPP-4i, GLP-1RA, and SGLT-2i. Diabetic patients with poor islet function usually require insulin replacement, but the majority of patients fail to meet ideal therapeutic targets with multiple hypoglycemic drug combinations (including insulin). Furthermore, poor glycemic control is closely associated with an increased risk of diabetes complications, consequently an increased rate of mortality. More recently, promising new drugs and therapies emerged, which have many other important benefits beyond glucose-lowering. In addition, some traditional Chinese medicine have gradually revealed their therapeutic advantages. All of them provide more choices for the treatment of diabetes patients.
