Book The Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project 1961 1972

Download or read book The Smithsonian Institution African Mammal Project 1961 1972 written by African Mammal Project (Smithsonian Institution) and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived and directed by Henry W. Setzer, the African Mammal Project (1961-1972) covered portions of 20 countries concentrated in the norther, western, and southern regions of Africa and generated over 63,000 specimens of mammals. The geographic foundation of this ambitious field program is documented as an annotated gazetteer that provides coordinate data for 785 cardinal collecting localities, collectors' names and dates of collection, general ecological descriptions, and mammalian genera obtained at each site. In georeferencing localities, emphasis was given to primary archival sources--original specimen labels, collectors' field journals, and contemporaneous field maps. Most localities surveyed fell within the Northern Savanna and Southern Savanna biotic zones. The Mediterranean, Sahara Desert, Guinea High Forest, and Southwest Arid zones were moderately sampled; the Southwest Cape and Afromontane zones were minimally represented. The principal inventory method applied by field teams involved multiple transect lines of snap traps, supplemented by hunting, roost searching, mist-netting, and specimen purchasing. Total collecting effort varied immensely among countries, from 13 days (Chad) to 770 days (South Africa), and the number of specimens obtained was strongly correlated; length of dedicated site inventory mostly ranged from 3 to 8 days of collecting effort per cardinal locality. The resulting 63,213 vouchers include examples of 15 orders, 47 families, and 208 genera of African mammals; Rodentia (705) and Chiroptera (20%) are most abundantly represented. The historical genesis of the African Mammal Project and its scientific goals as developed by H.W. Setzer are reviewed in the introduction to the gazetteer.

Book Bats of Southern and Central Africa

Download or read book Bats of Southern and Central Africa written by Ara Monadjem and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 1230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of a book first published in 2010 supplements the original account of the 116 bat species then known to be found in Southern and Central Africa with an additional eight newly described species. The chapters on evolution, biogeography, ecology and echolocation have been updated, citing dozens of recently published papers. The book covers the latest systematic and taxonomic studies, ensuring that the names and relationships of bats in this new edition reflect current scientific knowledge. The species accounts provide descriptions, measurements and diagnostic characters as well as detailed information about the distribution, habitat, roosting habits, foraging ecology and reproduction of each species. The updated species distribution maps are based on 116 recorded localities. A special feature of the 2010 publication was the mode of identification of families, genera and species by way of character matrices rather than the more generally used dichotomous keys. Since then these matrices have been tested in the field and, where necessary, slightly altered for this edition. New photographs fill in gaps and updated sonograms aid with bat identification in acoustic surveys. The bibliography, which now contains more than 700 entries, will be an invaluable aid to students and scientists wishing to track down original research.

Book excerpt: "The type collection of Recent mammals in the Division of Mammals, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, contains 945 specimens bearing names of 931 species-group taxa of Rodentia (Myomorpha, Anomaluromorpha, and Hystricomorpha) as of August 2013. This catalog presents an annotated list of these holdings comprised of 905 holotypes, 16 lectotypes, 8 syntypes (48 specimens), and 2 neotypes. In addition, we include 44 specimens that are part of syntype series that should be in the collection but cannot be found or are now known to be in other collections. One hundred and ten of the names are new since the last type catalog covering these suborders A lectotype for Mus peruvianus Peale, 1848, is newly designated herein. Nine specimens previously reported were subsequently sent to the vertebrate paleontology collection and are not included here. Suborders and families are ordered as in Carleton and Musser; within families, currently recognized genera are arranged alphabetically; within each currently recognized genus, accounts are arranged alphabetically by original published name. Information in each account includes original name and abbreviated citation thereto, current name if other than original, citation for first use of current name combination for the taxon (or new name combination if used herein for the first time), type designation, U.S. National Museum catalog number(s), preparation, age and sex, date of collection and collector, original collector number, type locality, and remarks as appropriate. Digital photographs of each specimen will serve as a condition report and will be attached to each electronic specimen record."--Abstract.

Book The Mammals of the Southern African Sub region

Download or read book The Mammals of the Southern African Sub region written by J. D. Skinner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-15 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This third, extensively revised edition of The Mammals of the Southern African Subregion contains detailed descriptions of all mammals that occur naturally on the African mainland south of the Cunene and Zambezi rivers, together with all mammals indigenous to the subregion's coastal waters. The rapid accumulation of new information resulting from mammal research in southern Africa, together with radical taxonomic changes across all levels of mammalian classification, have necessitated this new edition, which presents the best and latest data accurately in one comprehensive volume for use not only by scientists but also by an increasingly wide audience of general readers with an interest in the natural history of southern Africa." "J. D. Skinner and C. T. Chimimba have revised, expanded and updated the text in a major project overseen by an editorial committee constituted by the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria. Specialists on each mammalian order have served as subeditors, and a range of independent and internationally recognised authorities have reviewed every species description." "In this edition all the distribution maps and many of the illustrations of mammal prints have been updated and redrawn, several new colour plates have been added, and the whole design of this definitive reference work has been enhanced to ensure easy access to information."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Mammals of Africa (MoA) is a series of six volumes which describes, in detail, every currently recognized species of African land mammal. This is the first time that such extensive coverage has ever been attempted, and the volumes incorporate the very latest information and detailed discussion of the morphology, distribution, biology and evolution (including reference to fossil and molecular data) of Africa's mammals.
