Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Smith Alumnae Quarterly, Vol. 1: 1909-1910 It is seldom that a new-born baby seems of such importance to any one, except possibly its adoring mother, that it is considered advisable to write its biography; but our new-born Quarterly gives such promise of future great ness, at all events in the eyes of its nearest of kin, the Editorial Board, that they wish to have chronicled its pedigree and horoscope, before the proverbial ninth day arrives on which it may get its eyes open. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Smith Alumnae Quarterly: Index to Volumes XVI to XX, November, 1924-July, 1929 Names of alumnae, when occurring as main entries, have class designations appended. In the case of married alumnae, all entries are put under the married name, but reference is made from the maiden name and the class designation is given under both headings. Names of active members of the faculty (except the President) have (f) appended, and if alumnae, have also class designation. Names of the departments at the back of the magazine are not indexed, nor is much of the constantly recurring news which appears in them. The Bulletin Board contains regularly notes of vespers, concerts, lectures; Art Museum and Library exhibitions and gifts; departmental and faculty news; also undergraduate news, of athletics, Outing Club activities, dramatics, elections, prizes and honors. The Note Room is a running commentary on college happenings. Current Alumnae Publications and Alumnae Notes need no explanation. Most of the communications in Let Us Talk of Many Things are indexed under author and subject. Under the heading Obituary (with the proper subdivisions) are listed the names of alumnae, non-graduates, undergraduates, faculty, officers, and notable friends of the college, whose deaths are recorded in the volumes indexed. These items are not repeated in the main alphabet. Under the general heading Smith College (and not elsewhere) may be found all entries relating directly to the college: as, Faculty, Trustees, Dormitories, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Founded in 1871 as one of the first full-fledged colleges for women, Smith is known for its beautiful campus set in an idyllic New England landscape. A walk around its grounds is like a comprehensive tour through American architecture from the eighteenth century to the present. The campus includes such diverse buildings as Peabody & Stearn's Queen Anne-style College Hall; the neo-Georgian Quadrangle by Ames, Dodge and Putnam; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's International Style Cutter and Ziskind houses; as well as the postmodern Bass Science Center and Young Science Library by Shepley, Bullfinch, Richardson, and Abbott. The university's most recent additions include the Brown Fine Arts Center, designed by the Polshek Partnership; the Olin Fitness Center, by Leers Weinzapfel Associates; and the Campus Center by Weiss/Manfredi.

Book excerpt: "A crackling portrayal of everyday American heroines…A triumph." — Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue A group of young women from Smith College risk their lives in France at the height of World War I in this sweeping novel based on a true story—a skillful blend of Call the Midwife and The Alice Network—from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willig. A scholarship girl from Brooklyn, Kate Moran thought she found a place among Smith’s Mayflower descendants, only to have her illusions dashed the summer after graduation. When charismatic alumna Betsy Rutherford delivers a rousing speech at the Smith College Club in April of 1917, looking for volunteers to help French civilians decimated by the German war machine, Kate is too busy earning her living to even think of taking up the call. But when her former best friend Emmeline Van Alden reaches out and begs her to take the place of a girl who had to drop out, Kate reluctantly agrees to join the new Smith College Relief Unit. Four months later, Kate and seventeen other Smithies, including two trailblazing female doctors, set sail for France. The volunteers are armed with money, supplies, and good intentions—all of which immediately go astray. The chateau that was to be their headquarters is a half-burnt ruin. The villagers they meet are in desperate straits: women and children huddling in damp cellars, their crops destroyed and their wells poisoned. Despite constant shelling from the Germans, French bureaucracy, and the threat of being ousted by the British army, the Smith volunteers bring welcome aid—and hope—to the region. But can they survive their own differences? As they cope with the hardships and terrors of the war, Kate and her colleagues find themselves navigating old rivalries and new betrayals which threaten the very existence of the Unit. With the Germans threatening to break through the lines, can the Smith Unit pull together and be truly a band of sisters?
