Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Smaller Tuscan Towns It is natural that the traveller should want to see how this remarkable society expressed itself, what sort of surroundings it provided for its activities, how it satisfied its love of beauty. Fortunately the search for such things will take him into every corner of a wonderful land; he will inevitably mix with every condition of men, he will see the life of a race having an immemorial tradition of civilisa tion, he will journey through a country of strangely diverse beauty. If he be of Northern race he will find the quality of the life and the art gain in piquancy by a setting different from his own. This variety in habit and the climate of a Southern land will yield a constant delight, whether the sojourn be in some great city in some wide upland valley, in some remote mountain town, among the chestnut forests, or on the strangely fascinating Maremma shore. These chapters include Mount La Verna, where St. Francis in 1224 received the Stigmata, and where there is to-day a flourishing convent of the Friars Minor; Camaldoli, with its monastery and hermitage, and its great hotel, now a favourite summer resort of the Tuscans; Montecatini, the gay inland watering-place, the Tunbridge of Tuscany; and the old State of the Spanish Praesidia in the Province of Grosseto, with its wonderful Spanish fortresses and keeps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child of Tuscany Day have the good fortune to know the quaint and beautiful city where I have laid the scene of this little story; for among all the cities of Europe there is none more interesting, and which people learn to love better, than Florence, Florence, the fairest and most famous of the daughters of Rome! As Dante calls her. You have doubtless seen on your maps that Florence is situated in the northern part of Italy. It is a city of noble antiquity, having existed, some historians tell us, as early as the Roman period. In the twelfth century it was already the most important town of Tuscany, and after wards became the capital of the independent duchy of that name; and there the princes and dukes held their court. In 1861 all the provinces of Italy were united into one kingdom under Victor Emmanuel, and the court was removed to Rome, 1870. But Florence is still visited every spring by many of the nobility of Europe, on account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Tuscany in the Age of Empire

Download or read book Tuscany in the Age of Empire written by Brian Brege and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history explores how one of Renaissance ItalyÕs leading cities maintained its influence in an era of global exploration, trade, and empire. The Grand Duchy of Tuscany was not an imperial power, but it did harbor global ambitions. After abortive attempts at overseas colonization and direct commercial expansion, as Brian Brege shows, Tuscany followed a different path, one that allowed it to participate in EuropeÕs new age of empire without establishing an empire of its own. The first history of its kind, Tuscany in the Age of Empire offers a fresh appraisal of one of the foremost cities of the Italian Renaissance, as it sought knowledge, fortune, and power throughout Asia, the Americas, and beyond. How did Tuscany, which could not compete directly with the growing empires of other European states, establish a global presence? First, Brege shows, Tuscany partnered with larger European powers. The duchy sought to obtain trade rights within their empires and even manage portions of other statesÕ overseas territories. Second, Tuscans invested in cultural, intellectual, and commercial institutions at home, which attracted the knowledge and wealth generated by EuropeÕs imperial expansions. Finally, Tuscans built effective coalitions with other regional powers in the Mediterranean and the Islamic world, which secured the duchyÕs access to global products and empowered the Tuscan monarchy in foreign affairs. These strategies allowed Tuscany to punch well above its weight in a world where power was equated with the sort of imperial possessions it lacked. By finding areas of common interest with stronger neighbors and forming alliances with other marginal polities, a small state was able to protect its own security while carving out a space as a diplomatic and intellectual hub in a globalizing Europe.
