Book excerpt: Uan, the fat ghost living inside the Tham Luang Cave complex in the Mountain of the Sleeping Lady in Chiang Rai, Thailand, narrates a story that blends (true) local Thai legends with the facts from the international cave rescue of the Wild Boars soccer team. This is the first complete book ever written and published about the boys trapped in the Tham Luang Cave in Thailand. This novel is based on a true story. Carefree and adventure seeking, the Wild Boars soccer team enters the Tham Luang Cave complex in the Mountain of the Sleeping Lady in Chiang Rai, Thailand on June 23rd. When the monsoon rains hit, the cave floods. The boys are trapped by the Sleeping Lady's daughter Angie. As the local search grows into an international incident, the lives of the five long-term resident ghosts in the cave change forever. Imagine having been in the cave with the boys. The fat ghost, Uan, narrating the tale was there. He leads the boys to drinking water. Uan conducts dangerous recon flights from the ledge where the boys are stranded to Pattaya Beach, Sam Yak, and the cave's entrance while traveling the boys' only viable escape route. Can Uan stop his murderous cousin Ton who demands a human sacrifice? Can Uan save the boys from Angie? As the rescue continues, the cave's other ghosts are troubled by Uan's reports of cave divers. When the Sleeping Lady awakens, all hell breaks loose. Uan is forced into a tragic negotiation with Angie and her mother in a last-ditch effort to save the boys. The ultimate sacrifice and heroism by a Thai Navy SEAL during the rescue effort is heartbreaking. PRAISE FOR TRAPPED IN THAILAND'S CAVE "I was glad to get out of the cave finally. Book excerpt: The Sleeping King is the start of a new fantasy series by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Cindy Dees. Dees has won a Golden Heart Award, two RITAs for Category Suspense and Adventure and has also twice snared RT's Series Romantic Suspense of the Year. She is a great storyteller, and the adventures in her more than fifty novels are often inspired by her own life as the youngest female pilot in Air Force history. But as much as she love romances, Cindy's other passion has been fantasy gaming. For almost twenty years she's been the story content creator for Dragon Crest, one of the original live action role-playing games. Now, with the blessing and input of Dragon Crest founder Bill Flippin, she has created a trilogoy based on the game. The Sleeping King is the first in an epic fantasy series featuring the best of the genre: near immortal imperial overlords, a prophecy of a sleeping elven king who's said to be the savior of the races . . . and two young people who are set on a path to save the day. Download or read book Sleeping with the Dictionary written by Harryette Mullen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-02-22 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harryette Mullen's fifth poetry collection, Sleeping with the Dictionary, is the abecedarian offspring of her collaboration with two of the poet's most seductive writing partners, Roget's Thesaurus and The American Heritage Dictionary. In her ménage à trois with these faithful companions, the poet is aware that while Roget seems obsessed with categories and hierarchies, the American Heritage, whatever its faults, was compiled with the assistance of a democratic usage panel that included black poets Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps, as well as feminist author and editor Gloria Steinem. With its arbitrary yet determinant alphabetical arrangement, its gleeful pursuit of the ludic pleasure of word games (acrostic, anagram, homophone, parody, pun), as well as its reflections on the politics of language and dialect, Mullen's work is serious play. A number of the poems are inspired or influenced by a technique of the international literary avant-garde group Oulipo, a dictionary game called S+7 or N+7. This method of textual transformation--which is used to compose nonsensical travesties reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky"--also creates a kind of automatic poetic discourse. Mullen's parodies reconceive the African American's relation to the English language and Anglophone writing, through textual reproduction, recombining the genetic structure of texts from the Shakespearean sonnet and the fairy tale to airline safety instructions and unsolicited mail. The poet admits to being "licked all over by the English tongue," and the title of this book may remind readers that an intimate partner who also gives language lessons is called, euphemistically, a "pillow dictionary."

Book excerpt: Marge Piercy, a writer who is highly praised as both a poet and a novelist, turns her gaze inward as she shares her thoughts on life and explores her development as a woman and writer. She pays tribute to the one loving constant that has offered her comfort and meaning even as the faces and events in her life have changed -- her beloved cats. With searing honesty, Piercy tells of her strained childhood growing up in a religiously split, working-class family in Detroit. She examines her myriad friendships and relationships, including two painful early marriages, and reveals their effects on her creativity and career. More than a reminiscence of things past, however, Sleeping With Cats is also a celebration of the present and the future, as Piercy shares her views on aging, creativity, and finding a lasting and improbable love with a man fourteen years younger than herself. A chronicle of the turbulent and exciting journey of one artist's life, Sleeping With Cats is a deeply intimate, unforgettable story.
