Book excerpt: "Praised by the New York Times as "a highly important exhibition book," this lavishly produced catalog reproduces illustrated texts from the groundbreaking exhibition at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Called "fabulous" by the Washington Post, Falnama was the first show of its kind dedicated to the art of divination in the Islamic world. The Falnama were brilliantly painted compositions created in Safavid Iran and Ottoman Turkey in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Falnama: The Book of Omens combines rare images with scholarly texts on the deeper meaning of dreams, omens, and divination. Featured in this first publication ever devoted to the Falnama as a genre are intact volumes as well as text folios and illustrations now dispersed among international public and private collections. Essays by scholars of Safavid, Ottoman, and Byzantine history and language, complemented by full-color illustrations, offer detailed analysis of the form, content, and meaning of these rarely seen works of art. The first-ever translations of three of the four monumental copies provide insight into a vivid and enduring aspect of human concern--the unknown."--Publisher's website.

Download or read book The Qur an Respond to the Dead Sea Scrolls Myth written by Major (R) Rashid Iqbal and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-23 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will explore the innovative outlook of the early dynamics of the Jesus era while taking a lead from cross-referencing five major fields of the study. It is analyzed that in the light of latest development of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Judaism and Christianity have resolved many enigmas e.g. resolution of biblical disparity of the Last Supper episode by employing Essene's calendar of DSS community. On the other hand, Judaism has scientifically proven that no textual error or omission between existing and old cannons exists after carbon dating tests. However, certain empirical pieces of evidence related to hermeneutic meanings of several Qur'anic and biblical verses with respect to DSS have not been viewed. Qur'an does talk about Essenes and their community and links between the DSS community and Jesus do exist. A hypothetical scene is re-constructed taking aides from these factors while elaborating chain reaction of events during Jesus era, The Last Supper, The destruction of the Second temple and ultimately resurrection of the sleepers of the cave that became the catalyst of expansion of Christianity in Europe. With the help of this book, attention can be drawn in the field of DSS and early Christianity. It will open a new window as no serious input is made in the field of studying hermeneutic meanings of many Qur'ānic and biblical verses that contemplate many entwining interests of the sectarian tug of war in first-century Christianity. This book will prove the efficacy of consulting the Quran in resolving many conundrums of history.

The City is inhabited by those who have departed Earth but are still remembered by the living. They will reside in this afterlife until they are completely forgotten. But the City is shrinking, and the residents clearing out. Some of the holdouts, like Luka Sims, who produces the City’s only newspaper, are wondering what exactly is going on. Others, like Coleman Kinzler, believe it is the beginning of the end. Meanwhile, Laura Byrd is trapped in an Antarctic research station, her supplies are running low, her radio finds only static, and the power is failing. With little choice, Laura sets out across the ice to look for help, but time is running out. Kevin Brockmeier alternates these two storylines to create a lyrical and haunting story about love, loss and the power of memory.
