This book was released on 1991-05-31 with total page 961 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume marks the definitive publication of the most important fossil finds in palaeoanthropology: Olduvai hominids 7. 13, 16 and 24 (popularly known to workers in the field as Jonny's Child, Cindy, George and Twiggy). Found from 1960 in Olduvai Gorge and dating from 1.9 to 1.6 million years ago, they were identified in 1964 by Louis Leakey and the author amidst great controversy as a hitherto unrecognised species of the genus Homo, named by then Homo habilis on account of its apparent tool-making abilities. Professor Tobias develops this conclusion through extensive analysis of the cranial and endocranial material and teeth and comparison with a treasury of data, much of its original, on early hominds from South and East Africa, Asia and Europe, as well as modern human and anthropoid ape specimens. He offers a substantial exploration of the place of Homo habilis in human evolution, its status in relation to the australopithecines and Homo erectus and its apparent capacity for spoken language, which he sees as the key to the staggering enlargement of the human brain over the last two million years.

Download or read book The First Humans written by Frederick E. Grine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are some issues in human paleontology that seem to be timeless. Most deal with the origin and early evolution of our own genus – something about which we should care. Some of these issues pertain to taxonomy and systematics. How many species of Homo were there in the Pliocene and Pleistocene? How do we identify the earliest members the genus Homo? If there is more than one Plio-Pleistocene species, how do they relate to one another, and where and when did they evolve? Other issues relate to questions about body size, proportions and the functional adaptations of the locomotor skeleton. When did the human postcranial “Bauplan” evolve, and for what reasons? What behaviors (and what behavioral limitations) can be inferred from the postcranial bones that have been attributed to Homo habilis and Homo erectus? Still other issues relate to growth, development and life history strategies, and the biological and archeological evidence for diet and behavior in early Homo. It is often argued that dietary change played an important role in the origin and early evolution of our genus, with stone tools opening up scavenging and hunting opportunities that would have added meat protein to the diet of Homo. Still other issues relate to the environmental and climatic context in which this genus evolved.

Book Continuity and Discontinuity in the Peopling of Europe

Download or read book Continuity and Discontinuity in the Peopling of Europe written by Silvana Condemi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Western world first became aware of the existence of Neanderthals, this Pleistocene human has been a regular focus of interest among specialists and also among the general public. In fact, we know far more about Neanderthals than we do about any other extinct human population. Furthermore, over the past 150 years no other palaeospecies has been such a constant source of discussion and fierce debate among palaeoanthropologists and archaeologists. This book presents the status of our knowledge as well as the methods and techniques used to study this extinct population and it suggests perspectives for future research.
