Book excerpt: Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists, A Medley was written by Washington Irving in 1821, while he lived in England. This episodic novel is actually a location-based series of character sketches and short stories and it was originally published under his pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. The tales revolve around the occupants of an English manor, which was occupied by members of the Bracebridge family and which Irving visited._x000D_ Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of George Washington and Oliver Goldsmith, and several histories of 15th-century Spain, dealing with subjects such as the Moors and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846. _x000D_ Table of Contents:_x000D_ The Hall_x000D_ The Busy Man_x000D_ Family Servants_x000D_ The Widow_x000D_ The Lovers_x000D_ Family Reliques_x000D_ An Old Soldier_x000D_ The Widow's Retinue_x000D_ Ready-Money Jack_x000D_ Bachelors_x000D_ A Literary Antiquary_x000D_ The Farmhouse_x000D_ Horsemanship_x000D_ Love Symptoms_x000D_ Falconry_x000D_ Hawking_x000D_ Fortune-Telling_x000D_ Love-Charms_x000D_ A Bachelor's Confessions_x000D_ Gipsies_x000D_ Village Worthies_x000D_ The Schoolmaster_x000D_ The School_x000D_ A Village Politician_x000D_ The Rookery_x000D_ May-Day_x000D_ The Culprit_x000D_ Lover's Troubles_x000D_ The Wedding_x000D_ The Stout Gentleman_x000D_ The Student of Salamanca_x000D_ Annette Delarbre_x000D_ Dolph Heyliger

Download or read book The Works of Washington Irving Vol 1 of 2 written by Washington Irving and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Washington Irving, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing the Sketch Book; Knickerbocker's History of New York; Bracebridge Hall; Tales of a Traveller; A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada; The Alhambra Account of the Author. It was some time, if I recollect right, in the early part of the autumn of 1808, that a stranger applied for lodgings at the Independent Columbian Hotel, in Mulberry street, of which I am landlord. He was a small, brisk-looking old gentleman, dressed in a rusty black coat, a pair of olive velvet breeches, and a small cocked hat. He had a few gray hairs plaited and clubbed behind, and his beard seemed to be of some eight and forty hours growth. The only piece of finery which he bore about him was a bright pair of square silver shoe-buckles, and all his baggage was contained in a pair of saddle-bags, which he carried under his arm. His whole appearance was something out of the common run; and my wife, who is a very shrewd body, at once set him down for some eminent country school master. As the Independent Columbian Hotel is a very small house, I was a little puzzled at first where to put him; but my wife, who seemed taken with his looks, would needs put him in her best chamber, which is genteelly set off with the profiles of the whole family done in black, by those two great painters, Jarvis and Wood, and commands a very pleasant view of the new grounds on the Collect, together with the rear of the Poorhouse and Bridewell, and the full front of the Hospital; so that it is the cheerfullest room in the whole house. During the whole time that he stayed with us we found him a very worthy good sort of an old gentleman, though a little queer in his ways. He would keep in his room for days together, and if any of the children cried, or made a noise about his door, he would bounce out in a great passion, with his hands full of papers, and say something about "deranging his ideas;" which made my wife believe sometimes that he was not altogether compos. Indeed there was more than one reason to make her think so, for his room was always covered with scraps of paper and old mouldy books, lying about at sixes and sevens, which he would never let any body touch; for he said he had laid them all away in their proper places, so that he might know where to find them; though, for that matter, he was half his time worrying about the house in search of some book or writing which he had carefully put out of the way. I shall never forget what a pother he once made, because my wife cleaned out his room when his back was turned, and put every thing to rights; for he swore he would never be able to get his papers in order again in a twelvemonth. Upon this my wife ventured to ask him, what he did with so many books and papers? and he told her, that he was "seeking for immortality;" which made her think more than ever that the poor old gentleman's head was a little cracked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Washington Irving, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing the Sketch Book; Knickerbocker's History of New York; Bracebridge Hall; Tales of a Traveller; A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada; The Alhambra Now all this is extremely tantalizing. It is like being congratulated on the high prize when one has drawn a blank; for I have just as great a desire as any one of the public to penetrate the mystery of that very singular personage, whose voice fills every corner Of the world, without any one being able to tell from whence it comes. I would have it understood, however, that I am not writing a novel, and have nothing of intricate plot, or marvellous adventure, to promise the reader. The Hall of which I treat, has, for aught I know, neither trap-door, nor sliding-panel, nor donjon-keep; and indeed appears to have no mystery about it. The family is a worthy, well-meaning family, that, in all probability, will eat and drink, and go to bed, and get up regularly, from one end of my work to the other; and the Squire is so kind-hearted an old gentleman, that I see no likelihood of his throwing any kind of distress in the way of the approaching nuptials. In a word, I cannot foresee a single extraordinary event that is likely to occur in the whole term of my sojourn at the Hall. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
