Book excerpt: For far too long, the church has tried to make disciples using a one-size-fits-all approach. Some churches advocate 1-on-1 discipling, others try getting everyone into a small group, while still others training through mission trips or service projects. Yet others focus all their efforts on attracting people to a large group gathering to hear biblical teaching and preaching. But does one size really fit everyone? Based on careful biblical study and years of experience making disciples in the local church, Bobby Harrington and Alex Absalom have identified five key relationships where discipleship happens in our lives. In each relational context we need to understand how discipleship occurs and we need to set appropriate expectations for each context. Discipleship That Fits shows you the five key ways discipleship occurs. It looks at how Jesus made disciples and how disciples were formed in the early church. Each of the contexts is necessary at different times and in different ways as a person grows toward maturity in Christ: Public Relationships: The church gathering corporately for worship Social Relationships: Networks of smaller relationships where we engage in mission and live out our faith in community Personal Relationships: Small groups of six to sixteen people where we challenge and encourage one another on a regular basis Transparent Relationships: Close relationships of three to four where we share intimate details of our lives for accountability The Divine Relationship: Our relationship with Jesus Christ where we grow through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit Filled with examples and stories, Alex and Bobby show you how to develop discipleship practices in each relational context by sharing how Jesus did it, how the early church practiced it, and how churches are discipling people today.

Book The Everyday Leader

Download or read book The Everyday Leader written by John Cross and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, every one of us is a leader in some way - we just don't necessarily know it. Leadership is about inspiring change and movement, whether on an individual level - a person's attitude, behaviour, emotions or habits - or an organizational level - culture, goals, vision or strategy. By changing the way you approach the concept of leadership, The Everyday Leader will help you recognise and embrace your natural leadership qualities, so that you can be more motivated and empowered in the workplace and at home. The Everyday Leader tackles the main challenges that leaders face at some point in their career: leading teams; attaining buy-in from stakeholders; leading through artificial intelligence; whistleblowing; and leading from a distance. But the book also addresses the leadership issues that occur in day-to-day life: listening and empathising; making change attractive and accessible; influencing and persuading; and making the right decision through information overload. Providing advice and tools for those looking to polish their existing leadership skills or anyone who wants to take the next step in their career, The Everyday Leader also recognises that leadership doesn't stop once you clock off - these are lessons you can and should take home with you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of what worship looks like from a biblical standpoint and why the topic of worship can be so contentious among Christians. Because worship is inherently theological--because it's a manifestation of humanity's response to God's holiness--it's important to take seriously how we worship and the roles it serves in personal displays of adoration and in community with other believers. Exploring the Worship Spectrum provides an overview, critique, and celebration of six prominent worship styles: Formal-Liturgical – represented by Paul Zahl Traditional Hymn-Based – represented by Harold Best Contemporary Music-Driven – represented by Joe Horness Charismatic – represented by Don Williams Blended – represented by Robert Webber Emerging – represented by Sally Morgenthaler This unique format allows those with a heart for worship to compare different perspectives and draw their own conclusions on what the Bible teaches. It allows readers to understand the various approaches to worship, carefully evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and make personal choices without adopting a judgmental spirit. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book Finding Your Niche Maintaining Your Pastoral Poise

Download or read book Finding Your Niche Maintaining Your Pastoral Poise written by Rev. RK Shorter and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any new journey there is always the unknown factor, and one can never be completely prepared for every situation. There are, however, some shortcuts and advantages that are available if a person knows where to look. One of the greatest places to find those precious gold nuggets and priceless tidbits of treasure is in the knowledge offered by an experienced friend or colleague! This goes double for ministers and pastors that are involved in ministry in today’s environment! Every day there are many men and women answering God’s call to ministry without a clear and established pathway that will direct them after they have stepped into their calling or into their churches. They may undergo a formal and organized process, but, still may not have, or be given, the necessary tools to handle many of the situations that will be facing them in real life ministry. Any pastor or minister should be willing to concede that finding their way by the seat of their pants was very uncomfortable and should be avoided by any means if possible. The best advice comes from a trusted friend or colleague that is willing to share from their own experiences and include the good, and the not so good. There is no better classroom found that beats experienced and wise counsel. This work is designed to offer some helpful insight to those brave men and women known as ministers and pastors. This work may benefit any church or church member that is interested in better understanding the daily life of that individual they call their pastor. This work is intended to positively impact the lives of those who will follow in ministry and help them to have a better perspective of what they may face as they fulfill the call.

Book Faith and Fashion in Turkey

Download or read book Faith and Fashion in Turkey written by Nazli Alimen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey has witnessed remarkable sociocultural change under the regime of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), particularly regarding its religious communities. As individuals with pious identities have increasingly gained access to state power and accumulated economic influence, so religious appearances and practices have become more visible in Turkey's `secular' public spaces. More than this, consumption practices have changed and new Islamic and Islamist identities have emerged. This book investigates three of the most widespread faith-inspired communities in Turkey: the Gulen, Suleymanli and the Menzil. Nazli Alimen compares these communities, looking at their diverse interpretations of Islamic rules related to the body and dress, and how these different groups compete for power and control in Turkey. In tracing what motivates consumption practices, the book adds to the growing interest in the commercial aspects of modest and Islamic fashion. It also highlights the importance of clothing and bodily rituals (such as veiling, grooming and food choices) for the formation of community identities. Based on ethnographic research, Alimen analyses the relationship between the marketplace and religion, and shows how different communities interact with each other and state institutions. Of particular note are the varied expressions of Islamic masculinities and femininities at play. Appealing to a cross-disciplinary readership, the book will be relevant for scholars within Turkish Studies, Gender Studies, Islamic Studies, Fashion, Consumption Studies, Sociology of Religion and Middle Eastern Studies.

Book Religious Hair Display and Its Meanings

Download or read book Religious Hair Display and Its Meanings written by William C. Innes, Jr and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the fascinating world of religious hair observances within six religious traditions that account for 77% of the world’s adherents: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. Symbolic use of hair has been, and remains, prevalent in all six and carries significant amounts of religious and social meaning. Hair is a unique body substance. It can be shaped and colored, removed from us without pain but still retain an individual’s essence, signal our age, sex, and sexual maturity, and much, much more. The book’s approach is to situate each practice within its tradition. That requires a study of its foundational leaders and their teachings, sacred texts (where they mention hair), its rites and rituals, ideas of religious power and subsequent historical development. Contemporary practitioners are interviewed for their motivations. Even more insight can be gleaned by searching beyond an overt religious purpose. Social scientists from anthropology, sociology, psychology, and related fields bring their research to deliver added perceptions. The author reveals how hair practices are created from ancient psychological and cultural impulses, become modified by time, culture and religious intent, and are adopted by adherents for reasons ranging from personal religious expression to group identity. This book is written for the interested observer of our increasingly diverse society and for the student of comparative religion and sociology. It will change forever how you see hair.

Book How Tall Are You

Download or read book How Tall Are You written by Don Doxsie and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people believe that being extremely tall would be fantastic. It isn't. It has its advantages, but it also has nearly as many disadvantages. It can be useful in basketball, business, and politics, and when friends are trying to find you in a crowded place. However. it's also inconvenient, expensive, sometimes harmful to one's health, and a little tedious to be bombarded almost daily with questions about how the weather is up there. In this book, the author takes a lighthearted look at the various aspects of extreme height, and those affected by it, from the perspective of someone who has spent the majority of his life towering above the crowd.
