Book excerpt: Having stagnated for decades in the shadow of the UK, the Irish economy's performance improved after it joined the European Union (EEC) in 1973. This Element shows how the challenge of EU membership gave focus and direction to Irish economic policy. No longer dependent on low value-added agricultural exports to Britain, within the EU Ireland became a hub for multinational corporations in IT and pharmaceutical products. This export success required and facilitated a strengthening of education and social policy infrastructures, and underpinned the achievement of high average living standards. EU membership has also brought challenges, and several severe setbacks have resulted from Irish policy mistakes. But the European flavour of Ireland's structural policies (leavened with exposure to US experience) has helped it navigate the hazards of hyper-globalization with fewer political tensions than seen elsewhere.

The financial crisis, the Brexit crisis and the migration crisis were not of equal significance on the island of Ireland. The financial crisis was a huge issue for the Republic but not Northern Ireland, Brexit had a major impact in both polities, the migration and populism issues were less controversial, while foreign policy challenges had a minimal impact. The book provides a summary of the main features of each of the crises to be considered, from both the EU and the Irish perspective. Ireland and the European Union is the first volume of its kind to provide a comprehensive analysis on British–Irish relations in the context of Brexit. It assesses the Withdrawal Agreement and Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, the devolution settlement and the 1998 Agreement, as well as the European dimension to Northern Ireland’s peace process. The contributors explore a number of policy areas that are central to the understanding of each of the crises and the impact of each for Ireland. Chapters examine issues such as security, migration and taxation as well as protest politics, political parties, the media, public opinion and the economic impact of each of these crises on Ireland’s relationship with the EU.

Book excerpt: To what extent did Europeanisation contribute to Ireland’s transformation from ‘poor relation’ to ‘peer idol’? This book examines how Europeanisation affected Irish policy-making and implementation and how Ireland maximised the policy opportunities arising from membership of the EU while preserving embedded patterns of political behaviour. It focuses on the complex interplay of European, domestic and global factors as the explanation for the changing character of the ‘Celtic Tiger’. The authors demonstrate that, although Europeanisation spurred significant institutional and policy change, domestic forces filtered those consequences while global factors induced further adaptation. By identifying and assessing the adaptational pressures in a range of policy areas the book establishes that, in tandem with the European dimension, domestic features and global developments were key determinants of change and harbingers of new patterns of governance.

Integration in the European UnionÃ?Â?Ã?Â-s Ã?Â?Ã?«Single MarketÃ?Â?Ã?Â- has greatly accelerated this process, to the extent that the need for stronger north-south linkages has almost reached the status of conventional wisdom, north and south. Single Europe, Single Ireland? outlines this process of reversing uneven development providing an historical account of the conflict, emphasising its north-south dimensions. This gives an essential backdrop to discussions of socio-economic interests, party-political positions and state policies, north and south. Across these issue areas, the process of EU integration is linked to the wider process of convergence in Ireland. This is set against on-going divisions and divergences, leading to the conclusion in the book that North-South linkages require concerted state action and guidance.

The process has been driven by a wide range of forces such as improvements in transport and communications and, most importantly, the clear demonstration that openess to the international economy offers a route to economic development while isolatio offers stagnation and decline. Ireland has also participated enthusiastically in this process through the development of a modern trading industrial base. The last years of the twentieth century have added an exceptional dimension to the transition to a new millennium in Ireland. The economy of the Republic of Ireland has undergone a singular transformation; it has surmounted crippling weaknesses to attract widespread recognition for its impressive performance. No part of the island and no individual on it has been wholly insulated from the effects of this turnaround. Within the scope of our group presentation I ́ve get very interested in this phenomenon of the so called “Celtic Tiger”. In this termpaper I will try to explain what the “Celtic Tiger” is and what makes him run. I will also try to describe its effects. Although the Celic Tiger has led to an enormous growth, there is another side of the coin. Not every member of the Irish Republic has profited by the changes in the country. There aren ́t only winners. It ́s my aim to show the different sides of this economic boom of Ireland. I will analyse the advantages and highlights but also the downside of the Celtic Tiger and at the end of the paper the main points will be summarized in my conclusion.
