Download or read book Byron s Don Juan written by Elizabeth French Boyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was published in 1945, interest in Byron’s poetry and appreciation of his titanic role in Romanticism had been steadily increasing. Of all his vast poetic production, Don Juan, the last and greatest of his major works, offers the highest rewards to the modern reader. It not only stands out among his poems as the best expression of Byron, but it ranks with the great poems of the nineteenth century as representative of the era, and of modern European civilization. This title will be of interest to students of literature.
Download or read book Paradise Piece by Piece written by Molly Peacock and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can ask that a book tell you a compelling story, that it dazzle you with vivid writing, that its emotional content be pure and stirring, that the issues it tackles be timely, relevant, and put forth with candour and a tonic dose of humour. Paradise, Piece by Piece is such a book. Molly Peacock is an award-winning writer, and Paradise, Piece by Piece describes the coming of age of a poet and the flowering of her art. It is a self-portrait that speaks to the most intimate questions a woman can ask of herself and answers them with courageous introspection. It is the story of a child who had to grow up too soon; of the complicated web of relationships in which she, like all of us, defines herself – loyal friends, quirky relations, and tempestuous lovers; of the lifelong labour of self-determination, and finding ultimate fulfilment. Peacock’s language is emotionally charged, full of wit and dead-on accuracy. Her skill with narrative and character, her ability to write a vibrant scene, make her memoir as compelling as good fiction. Paradise, Piece by Piece is a virtuoso performance.

Download or read book The Lady and the Peacock written by Peter Popham and published by The Experiment. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi—known to the world as an icon for democracy and nonviolent dissent in oppressed Burma, and to her followers as simply “The Lady”—has recently returned to international headlines. Now, this major new biography offers essential reading at a moment when Burma, after decades of stagnation, is once again in flux. Suu Kyi’s remarkable life begins with that of her father, Aung San. The architect of Burma’s independence, he was assassinated when she was only two. Suu Kyi grew up in India (where her mother served as ambassador), studied at Oxford, and worked for three years at the UN in New York. In 1972, she married Michael Aris, a British scholar. They had two sons, and for several years she lived as a self-described “housewife”—but she never forgot that she was the daughter of Burma’s national hero. In April 1988, Suu Kyi returned to Burma to nurse her sick mother. Within six months, she was leading the largest popular revolt in the country’s history. She was put under house arrest by the regime, but her party won a landslide victory in the 1990 elections, which the regime refused to recognize. In 1991, still under arrest, she received the Nobel Peace Prize. Altogether, she has spent over fifteen years in detention and narrowly escaped assassination twice. Peter Popham distills five years of research—including covert trips to Burma, meetings with Suu Kyi and her friends and family, and extracts from the unpublished diaries of her co-campaigner and former confidante Ma Thanegi—into this vivid portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi, illuminating her public successes and private sorrows, her intellect and enduring sense of humor, her commitment to peaceful revolution, and the extreme price she has paid for it.

There, in a small country village, he meets the rich and impulsive Jardine Savage newly arrived from Jamaica and the new owner of Ramillies, the elegant but now dilapidated ancestral home of the Raynor family. Nearby lives Lizzie Raynor a feisty and brilliant artist who at one stroke lost her father, home and lover and is now forced to be one of Jardine’s tenants. Neither she nor the neighbourhood takes kindly to Ramillies new and exotic occupants. ‘This has been an unlucky house since my father died,’ she said quietly to herself, ‘or before that, since … since he killed the peacock. They all said it would bring bad luck. I used to tell myself it was all the fault of the peacock; it was a kind of comfort. But now this: perhaps the house is cursed after all.’ ‘A delightful book’ The Times ‘A delightful novel, full of humour and poignancy and rich in period detail’ Douglas Reeman, Novelist Winner Boots Romantic Novel of the Year Award

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How far would you travel for love? In her sparkling memoir, journalist Alison Singh Gee learns that love, riches, and a place to call home can be found in the most unexpected places. Alison Singh Gee was a glamorous magazine writer with a serious Jimmy Choo habit, a weakness for five-star Balinese resorts, and a reputation for dating highborn British men. Then she met Ajay, a charming and unassuming Indian journalist, and her world turned upside down. Traveling from her shiny, rapid-fire life in Hong Kong to Ajay's native village, Alison learns that not all is as it seems. Turns out that Ajay is a landed prince (of sorts), but his family palace is falling to pieces. Replete with plumbing issues, strange noises, and intimidating relatives, her new love's ramshackle palace, Mokimpur, is a broken-down relic in desperate need of a makeover. And Alison wonders if she can soldier on for the sake of the man who just might be her soul mate. This modern-day fairytale, WHERE THE PEACOCKS SING, takes readers on a cross-cultural journey from the manicured gardens of Beverly Hills, to the bustling streets of Hong Kong and finally to the rural Indian countryside as Alison comes to terms with her complicated new family, leaves the modern world behind, and learns the true meaning of home.
