Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. The Simpleton, which was written in 1968 and could not be performed for political reasons, saw the light of day only in 1994. Its complex games of power and identity, played out among a group of actors, remain entirely contemporary today. Set in a theatre, The Simpleton, in the age-old tradition of Russian drama, tackles the timeless problems of personal freedom and inner independence. It is anything but a simple play with its complicated chameleon-like nature new levels of reality continually moving in to push their predecessors out of the way. The mystification begins at the outset with the future arsonist, the Fop, prowling through the gall grumbling about the presence of spectators... The Simpleton is unlike anything else that was being written in the Soviet Union at the time and aside from its searing thematic content, it is astonishingly inventive in its theatricality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 436 In this 436th issue of the Baba Indaba?s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Turkish Fairy tale, ?The Simpleton?. A long, long time ago a poor Turkish woman had three sons and a daughter. The youngest son was somewhat simple and lay all day by the fireside. One day the two elder sons went into the fields to work, and before leaving requested their mother to cook them something to eat and send it to them by their sister. In the neighbourhood a Dew (a magical being) with three heads had erected his dwelling, and the brothers instructed their sister which way to take in order to avoid him. When the dinner was ready the maiden set out to take it to her brothers, but she mistook her way and strayed into the path leading to the Dew's house. She had walked but a few steps when the wife of the three-headed Dew stood before her and asked her how she came there. She chatted with the trembling girl until she had enticed her into the house, promising to hide her from her husband. But the Dew with the three heads was there waiting for the maiden. As she entered the woman said that she would soon have a meal ready. "I will knead the dough," she said, "but you, my daughter, must make the fire." Scarcely had the girl begun to build up the fire than the Dew stole in, opened his mouth, and swallowed her just as she was. In the meantime the men were expecting their dinner; they waited and waited, but neither girl nor dinner were forthcoming. Evening fell, and when the two brothers, arriving home, learnt that their sister had set out in the fore noon, they suspected what had befallen her. She must have strayed into the Dew's locality. The eldest brother, after a little reflection, resolved to go to the Dew and demand the girl. Well what happened next? Did the Dew return the girl or did something else happen. How did everything turn out in the end? You?ll have to download and read the story to find out for yourself. Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Baba Indaba translates as "Father of Stories". Each issue also has a "WHERE IN THE WORLD - LOOK IT UP" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. Book excerpt: First Contact: Assess human with the flawed, rudimentary, mind ... It's a moonless summer night when a severely damaged intergalactic spacecraft enters Earth's upper orbit. The alien pilot is desperate. Needs to hold up long enough to make repairs--do so before his pursuers find him. Cuddy Perkins lives a simple life with his mother, his dog Rufus, and a scattering of farm animals that still inhabit their old, dilapidated, Woodbury Tennessee ranch. He was used to the insults; retard ... simpleton ... village idiot. Momma says to just ignore them ... people can be heartless. But Cuddy already knew he was different. Ever since the accident back when he was seven. He didn't know how long ago that was, exactly, but he did know he was pretty big now--he was taller than his older brother, Kyle ... who was in prison, as well as the Woodbury Sherriff--the man who put him there. Unbeknownst to Cuddy Perkin's, his simple, uneventful, life was about to be turned completely upside down.
