Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silver Island of the Chippewa Some years ago, as I sailed along the rugged North Shore of Lake Superior, I had my first glimpse of Silver Island. The Duluth and Isle Royale boat had just left Port Arthur on Thunder Bay and was headed for the distant blue ridge of Isle Royale, Michigan, when I sighted an islet a few miles to the left of our course. There it lay, like a fortress guarding the entrance to Thunder Bay, out of which flows the golden stream of Canadian wheat to the markets of far-away lands. No man-of-war and no buccaneer ever tried to capture the great wheat-loading vessels at Fort William and Port Arthur, so why should our peaceful Canadian neighbors build a sea fort under the picturesque wooded rocks of Thunder Cape? An old trapper, who was also going to Isle Royale, knew something about that fortress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVTII THE FIKST CAMP ON ISLE ROYALE HAEEY wanted to make camp on a narrow strip of sandy beach close to the lake, but Dan pointed to a line on the cliffs fifteen feet above them. "Do you know why no lichens and mosses grow below that line?" he asked. ' Because that's the height to which the waves dash up. If we camp on this beach we might be washed into the lake with our whole outfit." They carried their equipment up through a wide crevice and selected a sheltered spot behind some spruces for a camp site. Their canoe they deposited in the crevice, well above the reach of the waves. While Harry made supper, consisting of hot tea, big chunks of broiled venison and hardtack, Dan set up their small A tent, and cut a lot of firewood for the night. For their tea lie brought out a small bag of brown sugar which thus far he had concealed from Harry. It was not until they sat down to supper that the boys became aware of how hungry, wet and cold they were; but the sweet hot tea and the juicy venison at once revived their spirits and their energy. "It's going to get dark early," said Dan when he had finished his share of the meat. "Let's put our camp in shape at once and then get into some dry clothes." So Harry washed the dishes and cut a lot of balsam boughs which he dried near the fire before he spread them out for their bed. Dan cut two large back logs of green poplar and then cut two green birch trees into lengths of about three feet. He selected the green poplar for back logs because he knew that the abundant sap in green poplar would keep the logs from burning through too quickly. In front of the back logs, facing the open tent, he soon had going a warm steady fire of green birch chunks which filled the tent with a warm ruddy glow...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chippewa Music, Vol. 2 Chippewa music in its relation to tribal life constitutes one of the subjects dealt with in the present volume, as well as in the writer's first contribution to this study.1 N ot less important is the melodic and rhythmic analysis of the songs, which was begun in the first work and is developed more extensively in the following pages. The native religion of the Chippewa also was considered in Bulletin 45. War forms the keynote of the present memoir, together with the Drum-presentation Ceremony, which is said to have united the Chip pewa and the Sioux in permanent peace. In both volumes there are songs of tribal games and dances, and songs composed in dreams, many of which are the individual songs of forgotten warriors. Gorgeous and literary, this is an unforgettable animal story about friendship, family, home, and belonging. For readers who love books by Kate DiCamillo and Katherine Applegate. Coo has lived her entire life on the rooftop with the pigeons who saved her. It’s the only home she’s ever known. But then a hungry hawk nearly kills Burr, the pigeon she loves most, and leaves him gravely hurt. Coo must make a perilous trip to the ground for the first time to find Tully, a retired postal worker who occasionally feeds Coo’s flock, and who can heal injured birds. Tully mends Burr’s broken wing and coaxes Coo from her isolated life. Living with Tully, Coo experiences warmth, safety, and human relationships for the first time. But just as Coo is beginning to blossom, she learns the human world is infinitely more complex?and cruel?than she could have imagined. Download or read book Ohio s Amusement Parks in Vintage Postcards written by David W. Francis and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1912, there were 54 amusement parks in Ohio. The parks came in all sizes, and featured such attractions as the Flying Ponies carousel, the Chute-the-Chutes water ride, and the Cyclone, Racer, and Dip-the-Dips roller coasters. Some, like Cleveland's White City, seemed to be courted by bad luck from the beginning, and folded after only a few disappointing seasons. Others, like Youngstown's Idora Park, enjoyed long lives and fostered beloved memories, but eventually closed down in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. A few, like Sandusky's Cedar Point, have grown to be considered among the greatest amusement parks in the world. But most are now forgotten.
