Inventive and suspenseful, The Quiet Earth is a confronting journey into the future, and a dark past. Book excerpt: **SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER** 'Exquisite...should be read by every gardener in the country' Observer The Garden Jungle is a wonderful introduction to the hundreds of small creatures with whom we live cheek-by-jowl and of the myriad ways that we can encourage them to thrive. The Garden Jungle is about the wildlife that lives right under our noses, in our gardens and parks, between the gaps in the pavement, and in the soil beneath our feet. Dave Goulson gives us an insight into the fascinating and sometimes weird lives of these creatures, taking us burrowing into the compost heap, digging under the lawn and diving into the garden pond. He explains how our lives and ultimately the fate of humankind are inextricably intertwined with that of earwigs, bees, lacewings and hoverflies, unappreciated heroes of the natural world. A poignant read for anyone who has a garden or cares about our planet.

Take a few tips from the new book by biologist Dave Goulson and it's a safe bet that beautiful butterflies will start gathering in your garden' Daily Mail From the Sunday Times bestselling author of A Sting In The Tale comes this practical guide to creating a paradise for pollinators. There are twenty six different species of bumblebees to be found in the UK, of around 250 species worldwide. Bumblebees are among the most important of our insects; these superb pollinators ensure that wildflowers set seed and reappear each year, and that our vegetable and fruit crops give us bountiful harvests. With the decline in the populations of our wild bees, these beloved creatures need looking after more than ever. Gardening for Bumblebees shows you how you can provide a refuge for bumblebees to feed, breed and thrive. No matter how large or small your space is, Dave Goulson shows you how you can make a pollinator-friendly haven. In this book you will learn the best trees, shrubs and flowers for pollinators, how to create the perfect nest and breeding site, and the best ways to control pests. Gardening For Bumblebees will encourage and inspire gardeners and allotmenters alike to make their patch more bee friendly. Praise for Dave Goulson 'Ideal for filling the garden with a happy hum' Tiffany Daneff, Country Life 'Goulson reminds himself that he 'began studying bumblebees not because they are important pollinators but because they are fascinating, because they behave in interesting and mysterious ways, and because they are rather loveable' Hannah Rosefield, Literary Review

Book Silent Earth

Download or read book Silent Earth written by John L. Brown and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cascading waterfalls, shifting lava flows, snow-filled canyons, and vast miles of rainforest, speak to the diversity of our unique planet, our home, our life-giving fountain...Earth. The awe-inspiring beauty of her natural wonders is a tribute to her adaptability and resilience over the ages. Like a living organism, Earth has battled the Ice Age, natural disasters, climate disruption, and man; surviving and thriving in some instances, while waning in others. The war continues today: Earth against Man, and Man against Man, for resources and survival. Where do you stand and what are your feelings about the Earth's creation and yours? Over the pages of this book, take a look at our environment, and yourself, from a variety of angles and perspectives. Some may challenge you to think beyond preconceived notions, and others, like a light bulb, may brighten a thought processes or concept you thought you understood...until now. Through scientific eyes explore our planet, its past, present, and likely future. Consider input and data from astronomers, researchers, believers in God, and atheists, as the author pushes for greater understanding and answers to our most puzzling questions: the creation of Earth and man, and the end of it all. Standing on a windswept precipice, with nothing but snow-capped mountains in every direction, it may seem difficult to fathom the dire need for environmental change. However, such a scenic, unspoiled view is getting harder and harder to find. Pollution, ozone depletion, water and soil contaminants, and acid rain, are taking their toll; slowly but surely killing the very Earth that provides the oxygen and nutrients that keeps us alive. Will it always be so? From now until the end of time, is a losing battle inevitable? You be the judge. Fighting back is never easy, but it is worth it. Give back, take a stand, educate yourself, and listen with your heart to the Silent Earth. In the telltale signs of our planet's yearning to survive, she whispers in her babbling brooks and in the rustling of her autumn leaves for you and I to make a difference. Will man and Mother Earth endure? Perhaps, but in what way and what will be the associated costs? Read this book and discover your connection and your role in the fight.
