Book The Professionalization of History in English Canada

Download or read book The Professionalization of History in English Canada written by Donald A. Wright and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of history in Canada has a history of its own, and its development as an academic discipline is a multifaceted one. The Professionalization of History in English Canada charts the transition of the study of history from a leisurely pastime to that of a full-blown academic career for university-trained scholars - from the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth century. Donald Wright argues that professionalization was not, in fact, a benign process, nor was it inevitable. It was deliberate. Within two generations, historians saw the creation of a professional association - the Canadian Historical Association - and rise of an academic journal - the Canadian Historical Review. Professionalization was also gendered. In an effort to raise the status of the profession and protect the academic labour market for men, male historians made a concerted effort to exclude women from the academy. History's professionalization is best understood as a transition from one way of organizing intellectual life to another. What came before professionalization was not necessarily inferior, but rather, a different perspective of history. As well, Wright argues convincingly that professionalization inadvertently led to a popular inverse: the amateur historian, whose work is often more widely received and appreciated by the general public.

Book Progressive Rhetoric and Curriculum

Download or read book Progressive Rhetoric and Curriculum written by Theodore Michael Christou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressive Rhetoric: Contested Visions of Public Education in Interwar Ontario considers the ways that progressivist ideas and rhetoric shaped early curriculum and structural changes to Ontario’s public schools. Through a series of case studies, conceptual analyses, and personal reflections from the field, this volume shows how post-WWI era debates around progressive education were firmly situated within political, economic, social and intellectual evolutions in the province and beyond. By framing contemporary educational rhetoric in light of historical concepts and arguments, Progressive Rhetoric adds to the ongoing historical examination of the meaning of progressive education in the modern age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferguson considers the thinking of four major Canadian political economists who developed their ideas while building the discipline of political economy at Queen's University. He demonstrates that the four clearly argued on behalf of the new liberalism, emphasizing individual rights and positive government, and suggests that their ideas reveal an intellectual position which differed from the imperialist and continentalist alternatives that dominated Canadian thinking at the time. Book Literary History of Canada

Download or read book Literary History of Canada written by Carl F. Klinck and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1976-12-15 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as a landmark in Canadian literary scholarship when it was originally published in 1965, the Literary History of Canada is now being reissued, revised and enlarged, in three volumes. This major effort of a large group of scholars working in the field of English-language Canadian literature provides a comprehensive, up-to-date reference work. It has already proven itself invaluable as a source of information on authors, genres, and literary trends and influences. It represents a positive attempt to give a history of Canada in terms of writings which deserve attention because of significant thought, form, and use of language. Volume I comprises Parts I to III of the original edition, and covers the years from the beginning of Canadian literature in English to about 1920. The contributors to this volume are David Galloway, Victor G. Hopwood, Alfred G. Bailey, Fred Cogswell, James and Ruth Talman, Carl F. Klinck, Edith Gordon Roper, Rupert Schieder, S. Ross Beharriell, Brandon Conron, Elizabeth Waterston, Alec Lucas, John A. Irving, A.H. Johnson, A. Vibert Douglas, and Frank W. Watt.
