Book The Sign of the Serpent

Download or read book The Sign of the Serpent written by Mark Balfour and published by Prism PressLtd. This book was released on 1990 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sign of the Serpent spans the chasm that has long separated ancient insight and modern knowledge. The image of the hooded serpent or Cobra - revered in India as a symbol of consciousness and the life force -has in the West lain buried in shame throughout 2000 years of history. In 1986, however, scientific evidence for the substantial reality of universal life-force energy fields in accordance with the ancient edicts shattered the reductionist's view that life and intelligence are mere effects of physical causes. CREATIVE PHYSICS, echoing a once universal 'Science of Life', is swiftly emerging with far- reaching implications that touch every facet of the human experience. The serpent is at last re-emerging from its long period of hibernation. MARK BALFOUR is a well-known photo-journalist and long time student of the culture of the Indian sub-continent. In recent times he has worked closely with physicists in documenting the discovery of the life-force energy field and the resulting breakthrough in the control of cancer.

This groundbreaking book explores in plentiful detail the symbol of the serpent from 40,000 BCE to the present, and from diverse regions in the world. In doing so it emphasizes the creativity of the biblical authors' use of symbols and argues that we must today reexamine our own archetypal conceptions with comparable creativity.--From publisher description.

He thus places himself in a modern tradition of Jewish biblical study that is flourishing in Israel, Europe, and the United States.

Book The Serpent Symbol in Tradition

Download or read book The Serpent Symbol in Tradition written by Charles Dailey and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serpent and dragon symbolism is ubiquitous in the art and mythology of premodern cultures around the world. Over the centuries, conflicting hypotheses have been proposed to interpret this symbolism which, while illuminating, have proved insufficient to the task of revealing a singular meaning for the vast majority of examples. In The Serpent Symbol in Tradition, Dr. Dailey argues that, in what the symbolist Rene Guenon and the historian of religions Mircea Eliade have called 'traditional' or 'archaic' societies, the serpent/dragon transculturally symbolizes matter, a state of being that is constituted by the perception of the physical world as chaotic in comparison to what traditional peoples believed to be the 'higher' meta-physical source of the physical world or 'nature.' In the course of Dr. Dailey's investigations into the meaning of traditional serpent/dragon symbolism, the following contributions have proved invaluable: 1) Guénon's interpretation of the language of traditional symbolism and the metaphysics that underlies it, as well as his interpretation of the terminology of the 'Hindu Doctrines,' 2) Eliade's interpretation of traditional/archaic societies by means of his concepts of chaos, creation, Axis Mundi (World Axis), and 'Sacred and Profane,' and 3) the insights of various other researchers of serpent/dragon symbolism. Beyond purporting to resolve some of the mystery of the ancient and varied symbolism of the serpent/dragon, The Serpent Symbol in Tradition strives to serve the related functions of interpreting the symbolic meanings of a wide variety of premodern artifacts and narratives as well as providing a study of the origination, and ancient human awareness, of the mentioned state of matter.

Book The Serpent in Samuel

  • ISBN : 1725259842

Download or read book The Serpent in Samuel written by Brian A. Verrett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Brian A. Verrett argues that 1–2 Samuel contains a serpent motif by practicing biblical theology and literary criticism. This motif derives from the serpent in Genesis 3, and its function within the Samuel narrative is to heighten the reader’s anticipation in the coming messiah, who is the son of David and the seed of the woman from Genesis 3:15. This messiah will defeat the serpent and inaugurate his glorious reign over a renewed world. When 1–2 Samuel is read in this way, one appreciates previously unnoticed features of the text, understands aspects of the text that were formerly confusing, and rightly sees that the whole of 1–2 Samuel is a messianic document.

Book The Return of the Serpents of Wisdom

Download or read book The Return of the Serpents of Wisdom written by Mark Amaru Pinkham and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to ancient records, the patriarchs and founders of the early civilizations in Egypt, India, China, Peru, Mesopotamia, Britain, and the Americas were colonized by the Serpents of Wisdom-spiritual masters associated with the serpent-who arrived in these lands after abandoning their beloved homelands and crossing great seas. While bearing names denoting snake or dragon (such as Naga, Lung, Djedhi, Amaru, Quetzalcoatl, Adder, etc.), these Serpents of Wisdom oversaw the construction of magnificent civilizations within which they and their descendants served as the priest kings and as the enlightened heads of mystery school traditions. The Return of the Serpents of Wisdom recounts the history of these “Serpents”-where they came from, why they came, the secret wisdom they disseminated, and why they are returning now.

Book excerpt: John Anthony West's revolutionary reinterpretation of the civilization of Egypt challenges all that has been accepted as dogma concerning Ancient Egypt. In this pioneering study West documents that: Hieroglyphs carry hermetic messages that convey the subtler realities of the Sacred Science of the Pharaohs. Egyptian science, medicine, mathematics, and astronomy were more sophisticated than most modern Egyptologists acknowledge. Egyptian knowledge of the universe was a legacy from a highly sophisticated civilization that flourished thousands of years ago. The great Sphinx represents geological proof that such a civilization existed. This revised edition includes a new introduction linking Egyptian spiritual science with the perennial wisdom tradition and an appendix updating West's work in redating the Sphinx. Illustrated with over 140 photographs and line drawings.

Book The Serpent s Gift

Download or read book The Serpent s Gift written by Jeffrey J. Kripal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field.” With those words in Genesis, God condemns the serpent for tempting Adam and Eve, and the serpent has shouldered the blame ever since. But how would the study of religion change if we looked at the Fall from the snake’s point of view? Would he appear as a bringer of wisdom, more generous than the God who wishes to keep his creation ignorant? Inspired by the early Gnostics who took that startling view, Jeffrey J. Kripal uses the serpent as a starting point for a groundbreaking reconsideration of religious studies and its methods. In a series of related essays, he moves beyond both rational and faith-based approaches to religion, exploring the erotics of the gospels and the sexualities of Jesus, John, and Mary Magdalene. He considers Feuerbach’s Gnosticism, the untapped mystical potential of comparative religion, and even the modern mythology of the X-Men. Ultimately, The Serpent’s Gift is a provocative call for a complete reorientation of religious studies, aimed at a larger understanding of the world, the self, and the divine.
