The stranger turns out to be Thaddeus Sholto, the son of a good friend of Mary's father. Thaddeus and his brother have been searching for six years for a great treasure that his father hid before he died. At last, after great effort, they have found the treasure, which, following their father's wishes, they must share with Mary. When they arrive at the Sholto residence, Thaddeus' brother has been killed and the treasure stolen.
