Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 8: May 1, 1911 Kansas Alpha, in this issue of the journal, submits three more songs for the consideration and use of the fraternity at large. Our local chapter has ever emphasized the musical side of our Fraternity life and are glad to make whatever contribution we can to the musical interests of Sigma Phi Epsilon. I have had the privilege of visiting a large number of fraternities and observing them in their chapter life. Too often there is almost total neglect of musical enjoyment. This is unfortunate. For what can promote fraternalism more than the enthusiastic participation in a rousing fraternity song? What can stir the heart of the old grad more than the singing of the fraternity songs of his college days? I have seen the eyes of some of our alumni swim in tears of joy and appreciation as the boys of Kansas Alpha sang some of the songs we here submit. The power of song has been recognized through the ages. These influences are far more potent in fraternity life for we here have interests and purposes more nearly similar than is possible in other spheres and organizations. Let us then give expression to our enthusiasm through one of the most enjoyable and profitable avenues - chapter singing. To this end let our brothers of talent give time and attention to the composition of new songs and let each chapter send in songs as rapidly as they are composed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 17: Oct., 1919 To refute the suggestion that my own chapter is unique in failing to respond to the letters of alumni, I can state that in the past few years I have recommended men to four Chapters and in no instance have I received an acknowledgment in return. This might imply that I did. Not understand the type of men my fraternity desired. Even so, the Chapters in question should have deigned to recognize my good intentions. But happily, I was not far wrong in my judgment, for the majority of these men were accepted by the respective Chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 3: December 25, 1905 Since our last letter to the journal, Delta Beta has not been especially active in initiating men into the Fraternity. But she has been very active in looking up good.men. It is our policy to be very sure of our man before admitting him to our brotherhood. We have had one experience this year which makes us all the more careful. In our quest we have found many good men, but now, as we are on a sound foot ing, we are in no hurry to accept our prospectives We have, however. Initiated one man who will be a true frater. He is Brother F alk. Brother F alk has just entered Jefferson this year as a Junior from Cooper Medical College, San Francisco. His home is in Idaho, and heis a star production from the State of the laughing water. Brother F alk bucked our prancing goat nobly, and with the exception of a few things is better off than before his arduous ourney into goatland. The animal needs a little doctoring up to tell the truth, and we expect to have him to the good, and tough for fighting by next time. This Chapter took advantage of the Jefferson Chi foot ball game to have a little social event. We hired an im mense sight-seeing automobile for the afternoon of the game, and each fellow with his lady friend occupied a place in the auto. We journeyed to the foot-ball field and back in it, after which we sat to a sumptuous repast set for us at the Chapter House. The choice viands were greatly relished by the hungered and beaten rooters, and I think I am safe in saying that everybody enjoyed himself At any rate it was a glorious gathering of youth and beauty. Extending to all of our brothers a hearty invitation to visit us at our new home, and wishing all well in the name of the Fraternity, I am. Cooney. A feature of the opening exercises was the prayer by Rev. Benjamin D. Gaw, one of the founders of the fraternity. Following the report of the Committee on Credentials, the report of the Grand President was given. Not only did this chronicle the remarkable progress which has marked the existence of the fraternity, but it struck the keynote of the fraternity 's principles and the cause of its success. After the presentation of the. Various amendments, resolutions, and memorials, the appointments of the committees were announced and adjournment was taken. Monday afternoon was spent in committee work. The delegates and visitors assembled in the green parlor Monday night to witness the initiation of Virdon M. Liston, of the baby chapter, Kansas Alpha, Baker University, Baldwin, Kansas. The ritualistic work was carried through by the team from District of Columbia Alpha Chapter, and was pronounced a model by all. The initiation was followed by a buffet supper and smoker. This was thoroughly enjoyed by the guests of the Washington boys. William C. Van Vleck, of District of Columbia Alpha, then took charge, and, under his direction, an informal program, combining the ridiculous and the sublime, was given. This included addresses by the Grand Officers and clever stunts by many of the visiting delegates. The morning session of the second day was devoted to business. At this time the reports of the Grand Officers were heard. These showed the fraternity at large to be in splendid condition in every department.
