Book The Sidneys of Penshurst and the Monarchy 1500 1700

Download or read book The Sidneys of Penshurst and the Monarchy 1500 1700 written by Michael G. Brennan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sidneys rank amongst the most influential families in early modern England, and can count amongst their number many leading lights of the Tudor and Stuart period. From the Elizabethan poet and soldier Philip, to the republican Algernon, the Sidney family were intimately bound up with the political, cultural and courtly life of early modern England. Taking a broadly chronological approach, this volume offers an overview of the Sidneys across several generations. By analysing various individuals and their writings, an intriguing new perspective is offered, not only on the culture of English politics, but also on the self-perception and ambitions of a leading renaissance family. During the Tudor period their long and fruitful (but sometimes problematical) association with the Dudley family in court and royal affairs is reassessed with regard to their relations with Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. During the Stuart period the Sidneys intimacy and loyalty to James I, Queen Anne and Charles I is contrasted to their more neutral (even hostile) attitudes to Charles II and James II. Against the backdrop of this shifting royal favour and religious and political upheaval, the Sidneys' political and domestic tactics used to preserve the family's reputation, estates and property are explored. The first book length study of the Sidney family's relationship with the English monarchy, this work will be welcomed by all those with an interest in English political and cultural history. Drawing upon both historical and literary sources it offers an absorbing insight into the self-perceptions of a leading renaissance family and how they adapted to the vicissitudes of the sixteenth and seventeenth century world.

Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV SIR PHILIP SIDNEY I T Penshurst, "at a little before five of the clock" on Friday morning, November 30th, 1554, was ushered into the world Philip, the eldest son and heir of his parents, Sir Henry and Lady Mary Sidney. He was christened Philip, after the King-Consort, who also stood godfather to him, the other sponsors being the Earl of Bedford and the Duchess of Northumberland. His birth afforded one of those few instances of a really great man proving so fortunate as to be the father of a really great son. The son's greatness in this case was, however, to endure for all too short a span. Like Alexander amongst the ancients, like Keats, Shelley, and General Wolfe amongst the moderns, he was destined to die before reaching the prime of life, before obtaining a chance of presenting to the sight of an admiring audience the measure of his genius. It seems extraordinary, in fact, that he should have achieved so much in so short a time. His life was a dream of gold. "Those whom the gods love die young! No illustrious Briton has ever bequeathed to his posterity a more glorious reputation. In honouring him, the ' English Marcellus," the "Bayard of Britain," the stainless knight "sans peur et sans reproche," the sweet "warbler of poetic prose," "lumen familiae suae" the "cherished child of the Muses," the "type of chivalry in the Elizabethan age," our leading historians are in perfect accord. If his portrait has been too handsomely depicted, it hangs, at least, depicted in the most generous of colours. If his character has been too highly praised, his virtues too highly extolled, and his faults too lightly condoned, it has been due to his biographers. Except, indeed, in the case of some fictitious charges of immorality against Sir...

'Nay, Lucy; methinks there are reasons for your desire to go down to the village weightier than the wheaten cake you would fain carry with you. Rest quietly at home; it may be Humphrey will be coming to let us know if Mr Sidney has arrived at Penshurst. Why such haste, little sister?' 'Because I do covet a place where I can witness the grand tourney at Whitehall. It may suit your mood, Mary, to live always on this hilltop, with naught to see and naught to do; with no company but a cross-grained stepmother, and the cows and sheep. I am sick of it. Even a run down to the village is a change. Yes, I am going; one hour, and I will be back.' Mary Gifford laid a detaining hand on her young sister's shoulder. 'Have a care, dear child, nor let your wild fancies run away with your discretion. Am I not one who has a right to caution you? I who have come back as a widow to my old home, bereft and lonely.' 'Because you married a bad man, and rued the day, it is no reason that I should do the same. Trust me, good sister. I may be young, but I have my wits about me, and no soft speeches catch me in a net.' The elder sister's beautiful face, always grave and mournful in its earnestness, grew even more mournful than was its wont, as she looked down into her sister's lovely eyes, and kissed her forehead. 'Child, I pray God to keep you safe; but the net you speak of is not spread in the sight of any bird, and it is captured all unawares.' Lucy's answer was to return her sister's kiss with a quick, warm embrace, and then she was off, with the basket on her arm, and her glad, young voice ringing out,— 'Good-bye! good-bye! I'll be back in an hour.' Mary Gifford stood under the old stone porch, watching the light figure as it tripped away, and then was turning into the house again, when a sharp voice she knew too well called,— 'Lucy! Lucy! Where's that hussy? There's two pails of milk to set for cream in the pans, and the cakes are scorching before the fire. Lucy! Where's Lucy?'
