Book excerpt: Did you know that if SIBO is left untreated, it can actually lead to other conditions, such as obesity, acne, anemia, fatigue, IBS, and even depression? Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is the excessive growing of bacteria in the lower part of the small intestine. Studies show that 6 to 15% of healthy, aymptomatic people have SIBO. These bacteria are of different varieties and is normally located in the colon or large intestines. The mechanisms that regulates the balanced bacteria population in the intestines are compromised and SIBO occurs. A person with SIBO experiences abdominal pain, diarrhea, abdominal distention or bloating which is because of too much gas in the stomach, too much belching, and constipation. When SIBO is severe, a person starts to lose weight and begins to have a vitamin deficiency. Because of the symptoms, people commonly thought SIBO as a typical stomach disease and it is not correctly diagnosed as SIBO. According to Kresser (2016), SIBO is a largely under-diagnosed disease. Patients do not usually consult when they have symptoms and most Doctors are not aware how common SIBO is. The symptoms of SIBO are difficult to minimize and treat. Firstly, because it is directly connected to the person’s diet. One might attempt to consume probiotic drinks or eat fibrous vegetables for good digestion, but this might worsen the symptoms instead. Unlike the traditional knowledge we have with food and our stomach, the diet to reverse SIBO is completely different. This book will show you that some of the common foods we eat, although they are nutritious, can worsen the symptoms of SIBO. You might want to pay attention to the details of each chapter if you happen to be experiencing the symptoms of SIBO. Weekly to do lists and recipes are provided to guide you in reversing its symptoms. In this guide, you will discover... Background information about SIBO How to limit foods with FODMAPs How fasting plays a role Which beverages and diet supplements to take How to reintroduce food and make appropriate lifestyle changes A selection of curated recipes to help you combat SIBO symptoms

Book excerpt: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine - particularly types of bacteria not commonly found in that part of the digestive tract. This condition is sometimes called blind loop syndrome. SIBO commonly results when a circumstance - such as surgery or disease - slows the passage of food and waste products in the digestive tract, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. The excess bacteria often cause diarrhea and may cause weight loss and malnutrition. Bacteria in your small intestine are normal, but bacterial overgrowth can cause serious problems. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, known as SIBO, is a digestive disorder where the small intestine has excess bacteria. Unlike the large intestine, which contains the majority of our gut bacteria, known as the gut microbiota, the small intestine should not have a ton of bacteria. The excess bacteria then ferment with food particles and nutrients in the small intestine and can cause an arrangement of problems. SIBO symptoms mainly affect the gut. Pain in the stomach, diarrhea, bloating, indigestion, and gas can all be symptoms of SIBO. It is estimated that more than 15% of Americans and 20% of Canadians are affected by SIBO. A proper diet is essential in treating SIBO. The bacteria mainly eat carbohydrates, especially certain fibers, so the recommended diet plans limit carbohydrate intake, limiting the bacteria's food supply and reducing the bacteria. Insoluble fiber is the only carbohydrate that the bacteria don't eat much of . Insoluble fibers, such as cellulose, are generally poorly fermented by gut microbes, but their presence in the diet increases gut transit rate and thus reduces the amount of time available for colonic bacterial fermentation of non-digested foodstuff. Research has shown that the Low FODMAP Diet, Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), the Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet (GAPS Diet), or a combination of these along with drinkable probiotics or capsules, are effective in treating SIBO and its symptoms. This phenomenon, also known as blind loop syndrome, often stems from factors like surgical interventions or diseases impeding normal food and waste transit in the digestive system, fostering a conducive environment for bacterial proliferation. The surplus bacteria frequently lead to diarrhea and can contribute to weight loss and malnourishment. Although commonly associated with abdominal surgery, SIBO can also manifest due to structural anomalies or certain medical conditions. Treatment primarily involves antibiotics, though surgical intervention may be necessary in some cases to rectify the underlying issue.
