Book The Small Golden Shrine from the Tomb of Tutankhamun

Download or read book The Small Golden Shrine from the Tomb of Tutankhamun written by M. Eaton-Krauss and published by Griffith Inst. This book was released on 1985-08-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small golden shrine found by Howard Carter in the Antechamber of Tutankhamun's tomb is one of the most spectacular and thematically interesting objects buried with the king. It is made of wood overlaid with gesso and covered with gold sheeting. All exposed exterior surfaces and the insides of the doors are covered with inscriptions and figures in raised relief that depict Tutankhamun and his queen Ankhesenamun in poses reminiscent of 'daily life' scenes in private tombs of Egypt's empire age, the New Kingdom. The shrine and the objects it contained are introduced in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 contains detailed descriptions of the relief and translations of the texts, whilst Chapter 3 is a critical consideration of interpretations of the decoration proposed in earlier studies by Bosse-Griffiths, Hari and Westendorf, and presents the author's hypothesis that the shrine was intended to 'document Ankhesenamun's ideological role as Tutankhamun's queen'. The style and dating of the shrine are the subject of Chapter 4.The illustrations include Harry Burton's original photographs (now in the Archive of the Griffith Institute, Oxford), supplemented by recent detailed photographs of the individual scenes, as well as diagrams and autographed copies of the texts.

Book The Enigmatic Netherworld Books of the Solar Osirian Unity

Download or read book The Enigmatic Netherworld Books of the Solar Osirian Unity written by John Coleman Darnell and published by Saint-Paul. This book was released on 2004 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Egypt, from the Old to the New Kingdom, enigmatic texts were created on the basis of non-standardized lists of characters and phonetic signs, the exact principles of which are still unclear to this day. For the first time, this study examines in detail the three most comprehensive known inscription texts from the New Kingdom, which were discovered in the tombs of Tutenchamun, Ramses VI and Ramses IX. Darnell shows that these three texts have a theological, iconographic and formal connection, and calls them collectively the "Book of the Solar-Osirian Unity". Differentiated and lively, he presents the content and theological peculiarities of these texts that deal with the afterlife with each other and in relation to other enigmatic texts of the new as well as the Middle and Old Kingdom.

The volume also contains the transcription of the Ramesside tax-lists on the recto of the papyrus. Download or read book Tutankhamun s Tomb written by Susan J. Allen and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2006 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book of vintage photographs commemorates one of the most memorable episodes in the history of archaeology: the discovery and exploration in 1922 of the tomb of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (Dynasty 18, ruled ca. 1336-1327 B.C.). These photographs, documenting every stage in the process of discovery, were taken by the renowned archaeological photographer Harry Burton. Burton was a staff member of the Metropolitan Museum Egyptian Expedition when he was "lent" to Howard Carter, the famed excavator of Tutankhamun's tomb. From the rock-cut steps leading down to the entrance passage, to the opening of the sealed chambers inside, to the first view of the contents of the tomb and the removal of the objects, Burton's beautiful black-and-white photographs show thousands of the richly made and decorated objects found in the tomb. Carefully reproduced from Burton's original prints, the photographs are accompanied by new descriptive text written by two prominent Egyptologists with extensive knowledge of the history of Tutankhamun and the contents of his tomb.

Book The Tomb of Tutankhamun Volume 1

Download or read book The Tomb of Tutankhamun Volume 1 written by Howard Carter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of the resting place of the great Egyptian King Tutankhamun [Tut.ankh.Amen] in November 1922 by Howard Carter and the fifth Earl of Carnarvon was the greatest archaeological find the world had ever seen. Despite its plundering by thieves in antiquity, the burial of the king lay intact with its nest of coffins and funerary shrines, surrounded by a mass of burial equipment arranged in three peripheral chambers. Published in 1923, this is the first volume of Carter's trilogy, describing the years of frustration in search of the burial site, the triumph of its eventual discovery and the long, painstaking process of exploring and cataloguing its treasures. Containing over 100 images from the site itself, this volume also includes Carter's short article, 'The Tomb of the Bird,' which inadvertently spawned the legend of the great curse of Tutankhamun's tomb.

Book Photographing Tutankhamun

Download or read book Photographing Tutankhamun written by Christina Riggs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They are among the most famous and compelling photographs ever made in archaeology: Howard Carter kneeling before the burial shrines of Tutankhamun; life-size statues of the boy king on guard beside a doorway, tantalizingly sealed, in his tomb; or a solid gold coffin still draped with flowers cut more than 3,300 years ago. Yet until now, no study has explored the ways in which photography helped mythologize the tomb of Tutankhamun, nor the role photography played in shaping archaeological methods and interpretations, both in and beyond the field. This book undertakes the first critical analysis of the photographic archive formed during the ten-year clearance of the tomb, and in doing so explores the interface between photography and archaeology at a pivotal time for both. Photographing Tutankhamun foregrounds photography as a material, technical, and social process in early 20th-century archaeology, in order to question how the photograph made and remade ‘ancient Egypt’ in the waning age of colonial order.
