Download or read book Moving Crucifixes in Modern Spain written by William A. Christian and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are religious visions believed only in certain times and places? In this book William Christian investi gates the settings and responses to a series of group visions reported by Spaniards in rural Galicia, Valencia, Cantabria, and Navarre in the early part of this century the most notable one involving the crucifix at Limpias, where Jesus was first seen agonizing on the cross during a mission service in March of 1919. In light of the social strife and strong anticlerical movements of the period, the author examines how gender and religious politics influenced the experiences of seers and the interpretation of their visions by church officials, journalists, and the public. Christian approaches the story inductively, from the visionaries and the parish to the religious orders, diocesan officials, and Vatican envoys. He places the events in the context of mission dramaturgy and pilgrimages to Lourdes, and shows their ramifications in Italy, Mexico, the United States, France, and Central Europe. Using oral testimony, church archives, local newspaper accounts, and apologetic literature, Christian finds that some observers related the moving crucifixes to a logical, millenarian sequence that included earlier apparitions in France; for others they were divine reactions to national political events; while for many local people they were signs for the establishment of new shrines. His study reveals the preoccupations of ordinary people and how they found expression in religious images. Originally published in 1992. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous. Over the last century and a half Lourdes has grown and developed as a center for pilgrims from all over the world, from every walk of life, from various Christian traditions and from other faiths. In this special anniversary book, Jacques Perrier, the Bishop of Tarbres and Lourdes, looks to the future and sets out what he sees as the twelve “missions” of Lourdes. These include the mission to the sick and the disabled, to the young and the marginalized. Each chapter is followed by a personal experience relating to the particular theme. The 150th anniversary celebration of the Lourdes apparitions runs throughout 2008. This book is the official pastoral presentation of the event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dream, and your dreams will fall short, Saint Josemaría Escrivá told early members of Opus Dei. This third and final volume of the most extensively researched work on the founder of Opus Dei covers his years in Rome, from 1946 until his death there in 1975. It describes how Opus Dei overcame major obstacles and blossomed from a handful of members in Spain into a worldwide institution, with more than 60,000 members of 80 nationalities. Andres Vazquez de Prada, a Spanish diplomat, writer, and historian who knew Saint Josemaría personally, narrates the story, using previously unpublished letters, diaries, and other sources from the archives of the Prelature of Opus Dei.
