Book The Showy Town of Savannah

Download or read book The Showy Town of Savannah written by John D. Duncan and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2019-03 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1817, the English architect William Jay arrived at the busy port of Savannah, Georgia. In the coming four and a half years, he designed several public buildings and private residences in Savannah and a few structures in Charleston, South Carolina. All of his work was remarkable; yet, soon after his departure in 1822, only vague recollections of Jay survived in Savannah, and in Charleston he was forgotten altogether. Early in the twentieth century, Jays work was observed by a few prominent architectural historians, and accounts of his life and labors began to appear. This new biography of Jay describes his place in a vibrant but volatile world. Jays father, the most popular preacher of the day, was a leader in evangelical campaigns to bring relief to the poor, to foster universal literacy, and to abolish slavery. William Jay suffered many disappointments, but he gained remarkable achievements, not least of which was his lasting imprint on showy Savannah.

Book Savannah Then and Now

Book excerpt: She's elegant, she's hospitable, she's lovely, and she's very well preserved. Meet Savannah, Georgia, a genuine Southern Belle and the latest title from the best-selling Then and Now series. Savannah Then and Now takes readers on a journey through time to some of the most remarkable sites in the city. Side-by-side images of the past and present show how much Savannah has changed since it was first planned by Englishman James Oglethorpe in 1733. The oldest planned city in America, Savannah has a grid design centered around open squares. Originally, the city expanded around just four squares; today there are twenty-one squares, each with a personality of its own. Compare then-and-now photographs, and you'll get a sense of Savannah's timelessness. During the Civil War, many Southern cities, including Atlanta, were burned to the ground. However, because Savannah surrendered to the Union, its Antebellum architectural legacy was preserved. Today, millions flock to Savannah to enjoy its historic buildings and famed Southern hospitality.

Book excerpt: Few writers have earned a place in readers' hearts as dear as Eugenie Price. Her novels entice us into a vanished world, peopled by characters who immediacy makes their joy, sorrow, heartbreak, and soaring love something we can share and savor. Eugenia Price chose Savannah, Georgia as one of the most fascinating cities of the South, as the setting of a quartet of novels that follow the fortunes of the city and families that gave it life. Orphaned Mark Browning was only twenty when he renounced his father's fortune and sailed to Savannah, his mother's birthplace...and the home of two remarkable women. The first is Eliza McQueen Mackay, his mentor's beautiful wife, whom Mark loves with a deep, pure love that can never be spoken. The other is lovely young Caroline Cameron, whose life is blighted by a secret that has tormented her grandparents for half a century--a secret that affects Mark more closely than he imagines. Desiring one woman, loved by another Mark must confront the ghosts of a previous generation, and face the evil smoldering hate, before he can truly call Savannah his home.
