Book Fruit Blights and Diseases of Fruit Trees

Download or read book Fruit Blights and Diseases of Fruit Trees written by T. Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit-Blights and Diseases of Fruit-Trees: Interim Report The climate of New Zealand is exceptionally favourable to the rapid increase and vigorous growth of insects and plants introduced from temperate countries. European insects and weeds, when intro duced, ourish with a vigour rarely exhibited in their native country, and increase with greater rapidity. But this is not all: under the new conditions induced by extensive cultivation the food-supply of many native pests has been increased to an unlimited extent, so that it is no matter for surprise that the grass - grub, lemon-tree-borer, and several species of scale, are found in ever-increasing numbers, and give good promise of excelling their imported allies in their powers of destruction. In former years fruit-cultivation was carried on under easier con dition: few insects had been introduced, and indigenous kinds had not discovered the more enticing food-supply afforded by introduced fruit-trees. All this is changed a tree is no sooner planted than it is in danger of being attacked, and requires to be frequently inspected 'in order that noxious insects and fungi may be destroyed on their first appearance. The intending fruit-grower should consider this risk before planting. Unless he determines beforehand that his trees shall be kept clean at any cost, his anticipations of profit will be dis appointed, and his orchards will be a source of infection for the whole country side. The book, too, has been written by special request, and an apology is due for its non appearance three years ago, as arranged. Um foreseen circumstances, however, prevented this. Book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of Fruit Crops Classic Reprint written by Harry Warren Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Fruit Crops It is a curious but logical fact that in spite of a rapidly increasing population and an increased demand for fruit, there has been a decided decrease in the number of deciduous fruit trees in the United States during the last thirty years. With this marked decrease in the number of trees, there has been only a slight decrease in total production, and it is probable that there has been an increase in fruit which actually reaches the ultimate consumer. It is evident that diseases and insects have eliminated millions of fruit trees and that those which remain have been made much more productive owing to the control of pests. This more efficient and more stable production in spite of the increase in the number Of parasites has been made possible mainly by the scientific development of plant protection. Efficient plant protection has been made possible only by a thorough knowledge of the nature and cause of the diseases of plants. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Leaflets on Fungus Pests and Allied Diseases of Fruit Trees Unlike insect pests, which are for the most part more or less clearly understood, there is often a certain mystery in the public mind connected with fungi. Their strange form, sudden appear ance and devastating habits are not readily explainable. To the practical fruit grower painful familiarity with their presence soon robs fungus parasites of any mysterious charm, and, by force of circumstances, he is compelled to study them, if it be only their mode of attacking plants and the best methods of keeping them at bay. Whether, however, the origin and} habits are understood or not, it may not be inadvisable to point out at the commencement of this volume the main outlines of the life of any ordinary fungus. Book The Season s Work on Arsenical Poisoning of Fruit Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Season s Work on Arsenical Poisoning of Fruit Trees Classic Reprint written by Elmer Darwin Ball and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Season's Work on Arsenical Poisoning of Fruit Trees Summary of Orchard Investigations: It will be seen from the above descriptions that in the regions like the Pajaro Valley, the Rogue River and Hood River Valleys, where little or no irrigation water is used, and where if anything the orchards suffer from lack of water, and the soils are comparatively free from alkali, the troubles under consideration are entirely unknown. That in every district in which the alkali is present in sufficient amounts to appear on the surface and where water is sufficiently abundant to cause seepage in the lower districts, that more or less of these root rot or collar rot conditions occur. In bad cases of seep age whole orchards are stricken within a year or two, oftentimes after they have borne a number of heavy crops. This may be due to a gradual rise of the ground water, or to the gradual extension down ward of the roots of the trees. In milder cases, only here and there a tree is affected and these often linger along for a number of years, sometimes in a dry year, partially recovering, only to be stricken again in a wet one. If there is any perceptible slope to the ground the trouble will usually be more marked on the lower end of the irrigation furrows. Where alkali is evidently the cause of the death of the trees, no variety seems to be exempt, all being equally afiected. Download or read book Canker of Apple Trees Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Hasselbring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canker of Apple Trees The Illinois apple tree canker occurs on the large limbs and trunks of apple trees. It produces extended blackened areas within which the bark cracks and finally crumbles away. This always results in the death of the affected limb. Pp. 227-233. The fungus causing the canker is a wound parasite gaining entrance into the tree through wounds caused by pruning or by accidental injuries. P. 233. The best means of preventing the disease is to avoid as much as possible all injury to the bark, to prune properly, and to paint wounds with an antisceptic solution. Badly diseased limbs should be cut and burned. P.234. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Trees and Their Enemies: With a Spraying Callendar This little volume is the outcome of suggestions which have frequently been made to the writers, that a Spraying Calendar is, at the present moment, much needed by fruit growers and gardeners. In the writing, the work has grown somewhat beyond the limits of a mere calendar, though it is still confined within very modest bounds, and does not profess to give more than a brief and popular account of such fruit tree pests as are more frequently met with in this country, as well as of the commoner insecticides and fungicides used in combating them. Book Manual of Fruit Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Fruit Diseases Classic Reprint written by Lex R. Hesler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Diseases It is the common opinion of authorities that fruit-growers V.lose millions of dollars annually on account of diseases of their crops. It has been estimated that 75 percent of this loss may be prevented by spraying - the chief method of fruit-disease control. In order to understand and to perform properly the measures of fruit-disease control, it is essential that some knowledge of the cause of the disease in hand be acquired. In recent years scientists and laymen alike have recognized the importance of certain technical details regarding the cause in order to undertake the prevention of these losses. Similarly, the value of other facts must be apprehended, such as the history of a disease, where it originated, with what rapidity the pathogene has spread, the losses it is capable of incurring, and under what conditions these destructive outbreaks (epiphytotics) occur. As evidence that the practicing agriculturists are rapidly becoming acquainted with the value of scientific knowledge regarding diseases of plants, it is only necessary to point to their interest and cooperation in the matter of obtaining accurate information under field conditions. The prejudiced and critical attitude of the grower is now for the most part of no consequence. Little self-protection is now needed by the experimental plant pathologist; the growers attitude is no longer antagonistic, but he is friendly and, what is more encouraging, he seeks with confidence the advice of the phytopathologist.
