Download or read book Effective Engagement in Short Term Missions written by Robert J. Priest and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective Engagement in Short-term Missions represents the single most ambitious effort to date to understand and improve upon patterns of ministry in STM. The goal of this book is to improve the ways in which STM is carried out and to improve the understandings needed on the part of all who engage in the ministry. • Publisher : Abingdon Press

  • ISBN : 1501856693
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book A Mission That Matters written by Jen Bradbury and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mission trips have become a staple in youth ministries across the United States. The problem is many mission trips remain disconnected from the rest of a congregation's ministry. As a result, it's often difficult to integrate students' experiences on the field with their lives back home. In this book, veteran youth worker and author, Jen Bradbury, will lay out a philosophy for mission trips that does just that: Connects what happens on the field with students' lives at home. To do so, she'll draw upon Scripture as well as stories from the 15 years she's spent leading mission trips herself, both domestically and internationally. Regardless of how few or how many mission trips a youth worker has led, Jen's words will leave them feeling inspired and equipped to create a comprehensive missions strategy that has the chance to leave a lasting impact on teens, congregations, and the world.

Book Re Imagining Short Term Missions

Download or read book Re Imagining Short Term Missions written by Forrest Inslee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for those who suspect that current practices of short-term missions are in need of serious reform. It is a book for those who recognize that, in this decade of global upheaval—and in light of the cultural, political, and demographic shifts affecting churches everywhere—now is the time for change. The essays here are intended to equip and inspire any who want to advocate for change but may not yet know what change looks like. This book offers honest perspectives from people who care about the purposes of short-term missions (STM) yet know that we must figure out better ways of achieving them. Nearly all contributors are actively engaged in STM—and many write from the perspective of those who host STM teams in places all over the world. This book is a platform for visionaries who are calling for better ways for the church to engage the needs of the world. In sharing their experiences, they hope to promote critical rethinking and creative reimagination about the ways that the global church might learn to collaborate on a new basis of coequality and mutual respect—for the good of the world and the glory of God.

Book Making a Difference in a Globalized World

Download or read book Making a Difference in a Globalized World written by Laurie A. Occhipinti and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, an estimated 1.6 million Americans participate in short-term mission trips, spending over one billion dollars—figures that have increased exponentially in the last two decades. About one third of U.S. congregations sponsor such trips each year. While they are referred to as “mission” trips, many trips focus not on conversion or evangelism, but on service projects—building a playground, providing medical care, or serving free meals to the poor. Short-term mission participants have a genuine desire to transform conditions of poverty, yet they don't always know how to go about it; many people involved in short-term mission work virtually reinvent the wheel when they design and plan their service projects. Making a Difference in a Globalized World: Short-term Missions thatWork is a guide to leaders of such trips. The book presents clear insight and research from anthropologists and development professionals, and encourages individuals to lead mission trips that make a greater impact on the communities that they are serving. The text provides: a framework for planning short-term mission trips; foundation for planning; personal anecdotes and case studies; and practical suggestions for volunteer opportunities. This handbook is a vital resource for any potential mission volunteers or organizers.

Book Short Term Missions

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Peter Overholt
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2014-01-28
  • ISBN : 9781493781515
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Short Term Missions written by John Peter Overholt and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can teach a lot of things but we can only impart what we have lived. After 85 short-term mission trips and almost nine years with boots on the ground as a full time missionary John Overholt has lived missions and his book "Short Term Missions: Long Term Impact" has much to impart. "It is a fantastic resource for everyone desirous of being a blessing to other nations and only wish I had it twenty years ago!" Dr. Theodore (Ted) Vail Associate Director of Foursquare Missions International. John Overholt highlights twelve key ingredients that need to be incorporated into the philosophy and strategy of a church mission program. He provides answers to some of the tough but valid questions facing mission teams these days. Is there really a need for missionaries anymore? Are we not in danger of creating dependency with our giving or causing unintended harm by our kindness? Do Short Term Mission teams really make an impact? Rather than paying for the airfare, food and accommodations for ten church members to come to Costa Rica for two weeks, would it not be better to simply send you the money that we would have charged the team so that you can invest it into the needs down here? Along with solutions necessary to promote healthy mission programs, John also highlights the benefits that Short Term mission trips have upon the sending church, the team members themselves, the receiving church and community involved plus the Lord Himself. This book will challenge and encourage pastors and leaders to rethink some of the ways we do missions. It gets to the very heart of the mission movement. If Jesus was the leader of your next mission trip, what would you do? Where would He take you? It gets back to the simple and yet very powerful commission of Jesus to go and make disciples and answers the clear question in Romans 10:15; How shall they preach unless they are sent? It is His mission. If you have a call to missions, this book will provide you with valuable resources and tools to help your next mission team make a long term impact.

Book Get in the Go

  • Author : Dr. Gwyneth Williams
  • Publisher : Author House

Download or read book Get in the Go written by Dr. Gwyneth Williams and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kingdom of God has been the talk of the world since John the Baptist arrived on the scene to prepare the way for the Messiah. After the baptism of Christ, Jesus continued the message of John: Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Moves of God throughout history have begun with this message. Jesus taught His disciples to pray, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Whatever occurs on earth happens as a result of prayer and takes place in heaven first. Heaven wants revival; heaven desires miracles, and we are the vehicles through which His Spirit works. It is going to take people who carry great vision and passion for us to establish kingdom power and authority in our generation. The power and purpose of God has never changed, nor has His strength weakened. Every generation has relied on men and women of God to make visible the invisible presence of God through signs, wonders, and miracles. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is awaiting vessels (people) who will represent His cause to a searching world. We have to go no further than our backyards to find a field awaiting harvest. The marketplace is clamoring for success with meaningeternal meaning. Neighborhoods are flourishing with young minds looking for leadership, and nations are longing for a message of hope. This is our generation, and the command to Go remains the same. We go in the name that is above all names, Jesus. The foundation for all that we do must be love. The apostle Paul admonishes us by saying, For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6 NIV). Let our expression and our message be saturated with love. Love covers over a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8b NIV). Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8a NIV).

Book excerpt: Can we go on short-term missions that don't do damage and in fact serves everyone? Too often the only people who receive the benefit of a short-term missions trip are the trip participants. Many books and critics have expressed their opinion about the damage done by many short-term missions groups on local communities. Reciprocal Missions provides a healthy path forward. A path that will guide us into short-term missions that will be mutually beneficial for everyone involved, both ministry host and mission trip goer. Reciprocal Missions covers cultural sensitivity, building on the ground relationships with hosting organizations, and the nuts and bolts of both facilitating and hosting short-term mission teams. If we want to do short-term missions with excellence, then we must be willing to do the hard work of relationships. With a combined 45 years of experience, DJ Schuetze, who hosts hundreds of short-term mission groups a year and Phil Steiner who leads hundreds of people on short-term mission trips a year have collaborated to bring their experiences and expertise to this book, Reciprocal Missions: Short-Term Missions that Serve Everyone.

Book excerpt: How does it happen that two people can be experiencing the same circumstances and conditions on their mission trip, and one person is having a great time, while the other is miserable as can be? And how can one short term mission team prepare so diligently for the practical ministry they'll be doing and be so ineffective as a group, while another team that seems less polished or skilled makes a huge mark in the culture they visit? Could it be that the heart preparation is more important than it is given credit for?
