Download or read book Social Impact Analysis And Development Planning In The Third World written by William Derman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although national governments and international agencies have committed vast sums of money to development, many projects have not only failed to improve the lives of the poor but in some cases have created additional social and economic problems. Such failures can often be traced to an inadequate understanding of the socio-cultural reality of the people most directly affected and to a lack of their participation in project planning, implementation, and evaluation. In this collection of essays, scholars and practitioners from diverse disciplines examine many of the perplexing social issues of development planning from the perspective of social impact analysis. Drawing on national, regional, and local case studies, the authors demonstrate why sociocultural factors are seldom adequately understood and discuss how they can be effectively incorporated into the planning process.

Download or read book Communities and Livelihood Strategies in Developing Countries written by Keshav Lall Maharjan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability of rural communities is threatened by a plethora of factors including climate change and disasters which interact in an intricate manner in making rural people vulnerable and poor. This book is the output of empirical research on communities and livelihood strategies in developing countries. It reveals how rural communities are functioning and earning their livelihoods by making the best use of the resources, local/internal or external/new and the combination of the two to counteract the various challenges they face, with the ultimate goal of becoming resilient to local or global shocks and sustaining that resilience. Local governance is identified as crucial in ensuring sustainable livelihoods as it ensures healthy collaboration between communities, on the one hand and civil society and those communities, on the other hand, in promoting self-sustaining development trajectories. Similarly, the role of social capital is not ignored as it brings in community drive and a sense of purpose, direction and solidarity among community members which facilitates problem solving in periods of crises and disasters.

Download or read book Conservation Agriculture in Subsistence Farming written by Catherine Chan and published by CABI. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation agriculture systems have long-term impacts on livelihoods, agricultural production, gender equity, and regional economic development of tribal societies in South Asia. This book presents South Asia as a case study, due to the high soil erosion caused by monsoon rainfall and geophysical conditions in the region, which necessitate conservation agriculture approaches, and the high percentage of people in South Asia relying on subsistence and traditional farming. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach to analyse systems at scales ranging from household to regional and national levels.
