Book Recollections and Experiences of a Horse Cattle and Farm Machinery Dealer Auctioneer Car Salesman and Farmer

Download or read book Recollections and Experiences of a Horse Cattle and Farm Machinery Dealer Auctioneer Car Salesman and Farmer written by W.A. IRWIN and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I'm writing about memories and experiences in my life from back in the 40's to present day. It has been a great time to be alive and we had great places to live. We farmed and ran our auction business in Bruce County, Ontario for a few years after college but the lure of lower priced land enticed us to move to Prince Edward Island where we lived for 25 years. In later years we found that the markets for livestock seemed to be drying up on the Island as the potato industry grew. We decided to move back to Bruce County so it was coming home for us. We bought a farm between Port Elgin and Southampton and have been here 18 years now. This book is a collection of short stories to do with our lives in these areas as well as our travels in the United States. Like it mentions on the cover these stories have to do with my experiences as a horse, cattle and farm machinery dealer, as an auctioneer, car salesman, farmer, as well as quite a few other random stories.

Book Writing South Africa

Download or read book Writing South Africa written by Derek Attridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the final years of the apartheid era and the subsequent transition to democracy, South African literary writing caught the world's attention as never before. Writers responded to the changing political situation and its daily impact on the country's inhabitants with works that recorded or satirised state-enforced racism, explored the possibilities of resistance and rebuilding, and creatively addressed the vexed question of literature's relation to politics and ethics. Writing South Africa offers a window on the literary activity of this extraordinary period that conveys its range (going well beyond a handful of world-renowned names) and its significance for anyone interested in the impact of decolonisation and democratisation on the cultural sphere. It brings together for the first time discussions by some of the most distinguished South African novelists, poets, and dramatists, with those of leading commentators based in South Africa, Britain and North America.

Book New Fiction in English from Africa West East and South

Download or read book New Fiction in English from Africa West East and South written by André Viola and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'recent' or 'new' covers novels and some short fiction published between 1980 and 1995, a period characterized by growing pessimism about the state of affairs in both East and West Africa. The section on South Africa deals more narrowly with the 1985-95 watershed marking the end of official apartheid and the beginning of reconstruction. The three sections aim at giving a coherent picture of the main directions in production, highlighting three main centres of interest, Nigeria, Kenya, and the Republic of South Africa, although some novelists from neighbouring countries are also considered (such as Kofi Awoonor from Ghana, Nuruddin Farah from Somalia, and M.G. Vassanji and Abdulrazak Gurnah from Tanzania). The evaluations conducted in the three sections lead to the emergence of a number of common themes, in particular the writers' predilection for topicality, the role of the past, and the controversy over the idea of the nation. Central themes also include the role of women in fending for themselves, both in rural and in urban environments. A further major theme is the role of the past (the Nigerian civil war; the Mau Mau period in Kenya; the revisiting of slavery; the refurbishing of myth; the questioning of historical reconstructions). The preoccupation of the West, East, and South African novel with the idea and ideal of the 'nation' is explored, particularly in the context of migrancy, hybridity, and transculturalism characterizing the anglophone diaspora. The volume is aimed at literary scholars and students and, more generally, readers of fiction seeking an introduction to contemporary literary developments in various parts of sub-Saharan anglophone Africa. No categorical distinction is drawn between 'popular' and 'high' literature. Though still selective and not intended as an exhaustive catalogue, the present survey covers a large number of titles. Rather than resorting to broad and ultimately somewhat abstract thematic categories, the contributors endeavour to keep control over this mass of material by applying a 'micro-thematic' taxonomy. This approach, well-tested in the tradition of literary studies within France, groups works analytically and evaluatively in terms of such categories as actional motifs, plot-frames, and sociologically relevant locations or topics, thereby enabling a clearer focus on the dynamics of preoccupation and tendency that form networks of affinity across the fiction produced in the period surveyed.

Book The Columbia Guide to South African Literature in English Since 1945

Download or read book The Columbia Guide to South African Literature in English Since 1945 written by Gareth Cornwell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the outset, South Africa's history has been marked by division and conflict along racial and ethnic lines. From 1948 until 1994, this division was formalized in the National Party's policy of apartheid. Because apartheid intruded on every aspect of private and public life, South African literature was preoccupied with the politics of race and social engineering. Since the release from prison of Nelson Mandela in 1990, South Africa has been a new nation-in-the-making, inspired by a nonracial idealism yet beset by poverty and violence. South African writers have responded in various ways to Njabulo Ndebele's call to "rediscover the ordinary." The result has been a kaleidoscope of texts in which evolving cultural forms and modes of identity are rearticulated and explored. An invaluable guide for general readers as well as scholars of African literary history, this comprehensive text celebrates the multiple traditions and exciting future of the South African voice. Although the South African Constitution of 1994 recognizes no fewer than eleven official languages, English has remained the country's literary lingua franca. This book offers a narrative overview of South African literary production in English from 1945 to the postapartheid present. An introduction identifies the most interesting and noteworthy writing from the period. Alphabetical entries provide accurate and objective information on genres and writers. An appendix lists essential authors published before 1945.

Download or read book Temporariness written by John Kinsella and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temporariness is a scandal in our culture of monumentalism and its persistent search for permanence. Temporariness, the time of the ephemeral and the performative, the time of speech, the time of nature and its constant changesthese times have little cultural purchase. In this volume two practitioners and theoreticians of time, space and the word embrace the notion of temporarinessseeing in it a site for a renewal of ways of thinking about ourselves, our language, our society and our environment. This collage of fragmentary genres approaches the notion of mitigated presence to build an atlas of intersections attentive to our own temporariness as the site of aesthetic and ethical responsibility. This book is a scintillating meditation on the temporality of human lives and the contemporary possibilities of humanistic writing. John Kinsella and Russell West-Pavlov explore the conjunctions of memoir, theory, poetry, anecdotes, journal entries and other fragmentary forms in their conversations about the political realities of the world and the imperatives of human survival. They write across hemispheres, they interanimate the specific experience of place and history in Germany, Ireland, Western Australia, the Adriatic coast, Africa, New England. 't?mp(?)r?r?n?s is the chance collaboration of two writers and intellectuals that could never have come into existence before it did and that can never be repeated.
